Bump. Looks like Penny got a dose of the new reality when you bring in a whole team of mercenaries. Tyreke Smith went on strike for a couple of days because his NIL payments were behind. The collective confirmed that he had gotten $175K of the $500K he signed for which contradicted what his “agent” said. He said that Tyreke hadn’t gotten paid for the last 4 months so Tyreke boycotted for a few days. I guess some money came in because he’s back on the team.

To me $500K seems like a lot of money for a guy whose career averages are 5 points and 5 rebounds a game but it ain’t my money. Last year they kind of snuck off to the mountains and scrimmaged NCST. Caught me by surprise, anyway. I do see how it would be an exercise is running a “tight ship”. As in “Loose Lips, sink ships”.

A cautionary tale for those that want to buy a new team of transfers every year. Something to be said for team chemistry and homegrown talent (with a transfer like DK when you can get them ).

The thing that bothers me about this is the relatives and street corner agents representing these players now. That’s a problem waiting to happen. Imagine a guy averaging 5 points and 5 rebounds in his career with an agent and getting $500,000. Ridiculous.

Don’t you think the problem is with the person paying too much instead of the person asking too much? Smith can ask for $millions but can only make what someone is willing to pay. To me, this speaks volumes about the Memphis State program and nothing about Smith other than how fortunate he is that some fool would so grossly overpay for his 5/5 level of production. JMO

IMO, the schools have the power to clean up the process, just appears they don’t have the resolve. The schools can refuse to deal with anyone other than the students and their families. If a high level recruit shows up with agents or the like, the school can simply move on to the next player. Instead, the schools want to complain and still negotiate. Man up school - AD’s - coaches - NIL’s and quit negotiating with shady entourages and quit acting like you have no choice because if you don’t someone else will.

To me, this is an issue similar to the flopping in football - there’s a n easy solution, but the folks in charge aren’t strong / brave enough to fix it. JMO, TIFWIW, AARP
