When is Warlick going to GET IT?

Simmons does need to play under control. She is a turnover machine. She shoots lights out sometimes so it's difficult to cut her off. I am sure she has the green light to shoot.
Bottom line is they should be feeding Russell and Harrison.

I apologize if my OP was a bit harsh--a few years of frustration emerged after that loss. It has been tough to see our hated rival dominate women's basketball while we futz around and can't beat good competition or make the final four anymore because we can't shoot the ball in big games. It has been tough to see the same problem bite us for years.

I said a few weeks ago that we had all the pieces, but I was wrong. UT doesn't. We're a lot better and lot more athletic than we were during PS's last few years, and we may have more talent than everybody but UConn, but we lack the physical and mental toughness one needs in big games--and we just never shoot well when the spotlight is on. Our perimeter shooting is consistently bad when we play a top opponent--the guards were 11 for 39 last night, 28 percent. The Vols do not have a good wing player who is a dependable shooter. Carter might become that player, but she's young. The team doesn't have many perimeter options. And defensively, we let one Stanford player just destroy us with her scoring and rebounding--for the second year in a row.

I also apologize for being too critical of Simmons. She has great passion for the game, and great athleticism, and she's a great Vol. I like and admire her. But it's also true she's not a good shooter in big games--we've seen it for four years, and it is time that Holly make adjustments for that fact. A coach's job is to play to your strengths and try to keep your weaknesses from getting you beat. When Simmons takes 18 shots and makes 5, you, the coach, have played to a weakness. This is a coaching problem. Sounds like Burdick had foul issues last night; if she hadn't, maybe she would have played more and Simmons less. Warlick has to reorient the offense. But, as mentioned, there aren't a lot of options. Let's hope that Carter and Russell keep improving; that Warlick finds a way to get more points out of Burdick, and that she finds the right role for Jones. Burdick has struggled with her shooting this year--but she's got a good stroke and has decent range and has been a good shooter, I think. This team /is/ talented and still has considerable upside if the coaches can develop it.

For all the Simmons hate, She is not the reason we lost this game. 3 point defense, rebounding, poor free throw shooting, and untimely turnovers is. Should Simmons slow down, and drive to the basket most of the time, yes. We don't value defense as much as we should and our post players, played soft yesterday, across the board. Chiney wanted the rebounds more. How many times am I going to see Harrison travel or bounce a ball off her foot. All these things are fixable.

And btw I love Burdick's attitude, how was she rated 3rd out of high school, she is not a consistent scorer at all. She hasn't been for 3 years

They've been trying to slow Simmons down for 4 years now. If she could play more under control she'd be much more effective. I don't know how you do it though. I'm not a coach but I'd love to see a few assists from her every game. I think that would slow her down.

I love these armchair coaches....if you knew so much why aren't you coaching....we played a great team on there home floor...sometimes you lose one....we was ranked number 3 in the nation...I can live with that

The 3-point defense was only bad when we went to a zone to try and slow down Ogwumike down low. We pulled and extra player down low, left the shooter with some space. On the last shot they hit, we pulled out to double Orrange on a the drive that she had been having success on all day. Sometimes, a coach has to pick her poison.

In general, the rebounding was fine, we didn't finish with much of a disadvantage on the stat sheet. 11 of Ogwumike's 20 were on the offensive end, most all of them put backs of her own misses where she was already in position.

Free throws and untimely turnovers were big factors. Shooting struggles early, not just from the guards, were also a factor.

All in all, we lost by six to a really good team at their place. It's disappointing, but not a killer. That's an even game played at a neutral site, a win at home. Lots of good SEC teams to build a resume against on the schedule and still a home game with Notre Dame ahead.

Teams take on the demeanor and attitude of their coach. Whether that is good or bad for the Lady Vols depends on how you feel about Coach Warlick's approach.

Translation: Unless you are a d1 level coach our higher, then you're not allowed to share critical thoughts about the coaching on a public forum. But if you want to wear orange tinted glasses and speak glowingly, then no qualifications are needed.

For a great number of years Holly has worked hard for the university...she played the role of loyal supporter and consummate team player for Pat of course she was rewarded handsomely....all indications are she is a good and genuine person...

She deserves an fair opportunity to see if she can effectively lead the program...if she can't she should be removed...that's life...that's life in the real world at least.....in my years working in the private sector I had to terminate several hard workers who were wonderful people AND good friends because they weren't doing their jobs as required...

I agree with your assessment Crazy Ivan but WOW, some of these calls for getting rid of Holly are mind boggling. She has a first year above expectations, wins the first 10 games of this season then loses 1 and some folks are ready to ax her. Get over it, the program is rebuilding what has been missing for a few years. We've seen some Bozo's hired in the football program that were allowed more time than this before being let go or (thank God) they left on their own. Holly deserves support not arrows, the if things don't improve you have some basis to complain. "All hail the arm chair!"

So far she has been a success as far as winning. We were picked to finish way down in the SEC standings last season and won the title. This season 10 and 1 only loss by six at probably one of the three toughest places to win in the nation. Presently 34 and 8 for a .810 winning percentage. We have beat a few good teams none that would be considered super. To reach the next level I think she is gonna have to make players start playing to their strengths instead of playing the way they want to play. Some of the players could really help the team a lot more if they would do the things that would make them better as well as the team. It will have to happen if the plan is final four.

And I agree with you....something I failed to include is that I have no idea what kind of coach she is, its too early to tell......however with that said if she quickly establishes herself as the best coach in the game, wins big including a championship or two she will still not be as good or as beloved as the woman she followed....its that simple....I can't imagine what following Pat Summitt is like...

It's not rocket science: Warlick has done a bad job of coaching when it comes to Simmons, who simply is not that good. Warlick seems to have given her carte blanche on the court, and that has to stop. Go look at the team stats: Simmons is shooting 25 percent on threes for the year--and 38 percent total. She doesn't have many assists (equal number of assists and turnovers), and not many steals. Carter is in the 40s in both shooting categories and has more steals, as I recall. Carter should play more, Simmons less. As others have noted, Simmons should be using her quickness to drive to the basket and then dish to others for open shots--that would be a lot better than taking and missing a lot of shots. I'm surprised none of the Vol beat reporters have brought this up yet with Warlick: When it comes to the offense, it is the elephant in the room.

So, how long have you been reading this board before you decided to sign up and post? For decades the Lady Vols used to win most of the those big games on the road. I don't think we've beaten a top 10 team on the road in a few years now-not to mention when was the last time we beat a top 10 team? However, this is only the second full season of Holly's reign so let's give her a chance. (Still upset about the loss to Louisville in the regional final. We should have won that game.):whistling:

i think i what is seriously lacking,is a strong team leader on and off the floor,The Lady Vols are lacking that one tremendous player, that will put the team on her back and make em win,no matter what and hold em accountable to how well they are playing during a game

Good thoughts,GM.Since Candace and Anosike,Lady Vols have not had the dominant player or leader to push them to excel. We end up with athletes who can't shoot well or shooters who are not athletic enough on the floor. Both types need to be pushed by teammates to make their games better and not accept up and down results.Still looking for that leader on this team, then the light may come on for some players. My thought on this team is that they lack the killer instinct and are too nice.

I think this team would be better if they would have a couple of the guards attack the basket more instead of settling for jumpers. Need to draw more fouls get teams in the penalty and make free throws.

All we have to do is review the long list of "favorite players" and we can see what is missing - the one player who would have her hands on the ball when it came that time. It is difficult for a post-player to be the go-to. If Lawson was the point guard, for example, how would the team be different.

also, with no basis for the thought - what if Graves were to play the three similar to Catchings or Stanford's All-American. Same for Jones - moving without the ball, following the ball "rebounding"
