Whispers on Stokes' Top 3

I'll always welcome a 5 star recruit into the fold, especially when it means that we've once again beaten out the SEC schools for his services. But, at least this season, we've already got our 5 star big man in this class. The excitement level of getting the second is no where close to the excitement at getting the first. Diminishing returns and all.

As for Stokes' chemistry in our locker room, I think...

Talent>Chemistry>>>>>>Coaching.

You already have a ton of talent, but lack the last two items. I have a feeling when a good coach is hired at Memphis, you'll feel differently about your assessment.

edit: Should have kept reading posts and hit the "like" button...

I've seen some great coaches coach some terrible talent, and the end result isn't pretty (Kevin O"Neil at USC, Rick Byrd at Belmont). I've also seen some terrible coaches coach some really talented teams and the result is less terrible (Cal at UK, Mike Davis at IU in 02').

I think it's obvious which can take you farther. Pastner is young and is learning on the job. He's got the most important part down (recruiting), we're just waiting for the rest to fall into place.

So, another coach?

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were in your shoes. I do appreciate your insight and participation on the board and please don't mistake my comments toward you as anything more than what they are. I just think it takes a coach that at least knows how to manage ego's even if they aren't the best with X's and O's. Cal puts his players in the position to excel by having an extremely flexible offense that encourages improvisation and is really good at managing the ego's of his players. Pastner doesn't command the respect of his players and IMO, the best move he has made outside of recruiting was attempting to send a message by kicking Perkins off the team... He just didn't seem to follow that up with much in the way of commanding respect nor being a disciplinarian in the least. I don't think he will be your coach too much longer. I definitely admire Pastner for stepping into such large shoes at such a young age and putting his nose to the grindstone. Effort definitely isn't, or won't be his downfall and I do believe that he will be a good coach one day.

Rick Byrd is an awful example IMO btw. He has been consistent with marginal talent for a while. He is one of the most underrated coaches in all of college basketball IMO.

Nope, but talent is obviously more important than coaching. UT obviously has worse talent than Memphis, but reportedly better coaching.

We've both played Austin Peay too.

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought we were talking about what was important to achieve significant accomplishments... like championships.

You're right, for beating teams like Austin Peay, you're gonna want to overwhelm them with talent.

Brad Stevens.

Memphis has way more talent on a yearly basis that Butler. Who do you expect to see in the final four? Not MSU.

Really? His team was getting top 25 votes pre-season. Last night his team lost to MTSU.

He's a good coach with terrible talent and he loses to the Blue Raiders.

Again, Pastner is young; we knew that when we hired him. He was willing to come into the program while it was facing NCAA sanctions and keep it's level of success from dropping off too much.

To allow him to leave or force him out before he's had the chance to mature as a coach would be a bad move. We're not expecting the next coming of Wooden, just improvement.

I attended that game and MTSU was clearly the more talented team. I would say Byrd is a very good coach that has very little athletic talent. He coaches kids with very good basketball IQ but lack physical skills.

BTW an interesting note to that game last night was one of the three officials got sick just before tip and there were only 2 officials. Very few whistles blew and it was the most physical game I have seen in a while. I liked it and now want there to only be 2 officials at every game.

Yep I knew UT was an Adidas. I figured Memphis was Nike since Calipari used to be there. I think Nike and Adidas have a lot more to do with recruiting than most people realize.

That, my friend, is a huge understatement. Suckiest part about HS recruiting, even more than the AAu garbage.
