Who Could replace Phil?

I'm don't mind saying it: I'm not a Fulmer fan anymore. I think he's done a LOUSY job the last few years--primarily because the offense (including the offensive line) and the special teams have been in a downward spiral for a few years and he's done nothing--zippo--to correct things. Last year's record was good but misleading in my view: the Vols struggled offensively offensively (duh) and UT greased out a few victories in games in which it didn't play very well. The Vols haven't won a big game at Neyland in years! Fulmer is 3-7 vs. spurrier, 1-4 (or 1-5?) against Richt and 0-1 against Meyer. And everybody is still comfortable with Fulmer? Give me a break. Fulmer has become a pretty good "spinner" in recent years, explaining Vol losses. He's now saying that the Vols are only "a few plays away from being undefeated." That's misleading. It's probably true that with an /average/ offense, UT would be 5-1 or maybe undefeated--but to explain away a HORRIBLE year of bad offensive and ST play----I repeat, HORRIBLE,--and year of bad coaching, with a "few plays" comment is BS. It's only because the defense has been close to tremendous that the Vols have stayed close in their big games. The defense has been put in TERRIBLE field-positions situations all year.

Fulmer had a good run in the 1990s, when the offensive talent was good and he had a solid offensive coordinator. But the offensive talent has fallen off and he picked the wrong guys to be OC and OL coach---and we've seen the results. I also think the WR and OL coaching has been bad. Fulmer brags about the OL EVERY YEAR in the preseason--and they rarely deliver--they don't fire off the ball like they used to. Special teams in recent years have been bad.

So I would support a change at HEAD coach if a really talented coach were interested in the job. A guy like Fisher would be IDEAL--NFL head coach, tough-minded, happy to run the ball. But it's rare for an NFL head coach to take a college coaching job. Groh is a UVA grad, and usc just got lucky to get Carroll. Gruden will probably be in the NFL for his entire career. But I sadly agree: Fulmer is probably not going anywhere for a while.

Tubberville has beat Fulmer 3 out of 3 the last 2 years hes been at Auburn. These were not close games for the most part either.

I think Fulmers recruiting classes have been rated as better then Tubberville's during this time.

Tubberville may not be an elite coach, but it doesnt say much about Fulmer, for the most part he's owned Fulmer, with argueably less highly recruited players.

Oct. 2 Auburn Knoxville 10-34 L

SEC Championship
Dec. 4 Auburn Atlanta 28-38 L

Oct. 4 Auburn Auburn 28-21 L

Auvurn had FOUR first round picks on the team that beat UT twice last year, that might have had a little to do with it.

Now that is a good coach. Unfortunately he wouldn't give ole Tennessee the time of day.

ok guys if you want to make that point what about our 2001 team they were loaded with nfl talent and didn't even win the sec. atleast tubberville when he has talent he does something with it. stallworth, washington, haynsworth, henderson, witten, stephens, fleming, thats just some of the names and nothing to show for it not even an sec ring. i can see your guys argument, but you have to admit we underacheive almost every year with a lame offense. maybe your right and i'm overating tubberville, but in my opinion i would take him over fulmer if he could recruit alittle better.

I could understand if 2001 was a complete bust, but it was a great season ruined by turnovers and some poor play in the SECCG. After that UT just destroyed a very good Michigan team....you cannot pin the 2001 loss on coaching. Yes that team was loaded, and they showed it in all but one game wich cost them the SEC and a shot at another NC. No one ever wants to give Fulmer credit for the good years, the 2001 SECCG was the coaching staff's fault apparently but I guess all of the great wins that season were all because the players were just that good, it had nothing to do with coaching, right?

The Michigan win in 2001 was nice but the wolverines were in a definite rebuilding mode that year.

If Fulmer leaves for whatever reason, Chavis is going to be expecting to be named heach coach.

If you go out and hire some big name as head coach, your probably going to have to replace your defensive coordinator as well.

Before we go out and high some big name coach, you better consider the impact it has on the coaches who remain. Chavis will probably take most of the defensive coaches with him, if he can.

Chavis is a tennessee guy, if they go that direction, he will probably be named head coach. But anyone else, and Chavis interviews for the head job and doesnt get it. I expect he will leave. He's already turned down several other coaching jobs in the past.

I like Chavis. He is a true Vol, but he is not irreplacable. He"s had some defenses that could not stop big plays. Like last year in the SEC c'ship game we needed just one more stop in the 4th quarter and his D gives up the big pass from Jason Campbell. Also, after the fumble against Bama, we did let them drive for the game winning FG.

Please... Wilburn, I beg of you come back from the rare form of dementia that you are suffering from and post something that doesn't make me ashamed to be an intelligent Vol fan.  We didn't want him in the sixties so he doesn't want to us now.  :banghead:  :moon2:

Kind sir, dementia can be genetic.

With that said, remembering the 60s well, not having to read about them and to listen to long, drunken tales of old men from that time, speaking of drunken, if the Vol coach who showed at Steve's Johnson City door had not so offended Pastor Spurrier with his Geo Dickel breath, he would have been a Vol.

Of course, we also had the wonderful single wing which was dramatically out of place and Doug Dickey had yet to save us from that alignment and mentality.

No, Mr. Spurrier has always had a hankerin' for VolunteerLand and much of his success can be attributed to unrequited love.

Whoda thunk it he would end up in SC, the Mississippi of the East Coast?
