the guy was a trained attorney, author of the Declaration and the vast majority of the Constitution, our first true architect, thinker and patriot. Whittling him down to farmer and book collector is a bit shortsighted. I still see nothing about the man which suggests he would have taken the presidency for life because he believed there to be a need. He probably had more vision than anyone else of his generation. That vision would have precluded him from accepting a lifetime appointment, as would have his desire to found a university.Ego? The man was a novice farmer and book collector. In the situation given, if he were in Washington's place, he would only take the position of President for Life as a position of need to get the country rolling.
Lord Protector....... Cromwell didn't want the position, it was a position of need and he felt like it was something he had to do for the country.

I now see about Cromwell. The word indifferent completely threw me.

Many men and women have passions apart from their professional function or the things they're most noted for. Jefferson is no different.Jefferson's passions, what he loved, where his farm and book collecting.
The university is an entirely seperate matter.
Wow, you have managed to go about 5 posts without pot shots!
I am proud of you!
:hi:

1.) I'm cool with you not liking my posting style, but the condescending pride is unnecessary. I'm actually not here for affirmation. 2.) I'm here solely for the entertainment.
fair enough. I thought the comment about your being proud of me for avoiding pot shots in 5 consecutive posts was a pot shot at my attitude on the board. How could it not have been?Yeah seriously, you have completely lost me.
Feigned pride?
I thought we were having fun talking about Thomas Jefferson.
:dunno:

I can live with that!
My high school history teacher was a vast right wing crazy guy!
We would watch the state of the union address and he would ask us when we thought Clinton was telling a lie and he would use his giant pointer stick and hit the tv and say whenever he opens his mouth!
