Who is worse? Juwan Howard or Penny Hardaway,

Yeah you have to give him fault. I know its movies. But remember when the Billy Beane(Brad Pitt) had that scout in Moneyball disagreement. He says something to effect I am not going to fire you Grady. Then the scout put hands on his shoulders smugly. Then he says now I will. Yeah putting hands on another person beyond the respectful shake hands or back or shoulder pats can't be disregarded. Clearly Howard escalated it but I agree Gard should have gotten like a game suspension at least.
It was respectful. It’s a common gesture to engage w someone. Had Juwan just kept walking and nothing further had happened you think Gard should have been suspended for a game? No! Again, more after the fact rationalizing

I'd like to see the full view of this photo, as it appears to be cropped. To me, it looks like Spoelstra is upset with an official's call and Howard (his assistant coach at the time) is trying to deescalate the situation. As one can see, both coaches are looking in the same direction

Having made that observation, that does not mean I approve of either coach's actions in the handshake line (especially Howard smacking the assistant). Howard definitely deserved the suspension and fine (the league possibly could have added another 10 grand), but Gard deserved and received punishment as well.
It was a joke. Clearly he’s not pissed at Howard here. Though kind of ironic

Only I’m not trying to make an equivalence at all.

I’ve stated earlier Howard’s reaction was over the top and disproportionate to Gard grabbing his arm.

And yes, there was tension prior to the arm grab. Clearly Howard was pissed and didn’t want to shake Gard’s hand.
Howard is ?6'8"? and Gard is ?5'8"?

If Juwan Howard had wanted to keep going and not speak beyond a quick shake, he could've dragged Gard all the way to the locker room.

This: he put his hands on me is like a man saying a woman put her hands on him when he's a foot taller and much stronger. If Howard was "threatened" by Gard or "disrespected" or whatever....... he needs to check his Testosterone levels, they're low.

They’re two grown men.

Gard doesn’t get a pass because he’s a foot shorter. Don’t grab a guy who doesn’t want to be cordial.

Howard’s comments about being threatened don’t hold water either. You are well within your rights to question his testosterone levels, although I doubt you’d question it in his company.

I think it’s fair to question, considering he grew up in the South Side of Chicago. Gotta lose some street cred with a “punch” like that.

One and half grown men.

Howard punches like a middle school kid.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see Shaq and Barkley make fun of Howard about that weak a$$ forehead slap.

If you're going risk your career, at least throw a punch. Again, watch Woody Hayes wind up and literally go for the throat on Clemson player. It was useless but it was a respectable legit chop to the throat, not an attempt to palm some guy's dome.

I dunno man. I understand the thoughtfulness of the touch. However the delivery can also be the hey look at me when I am talking to you. To me that's very plausible here and Howard did something dumb going to next level.

Don't put your hands on someone that's the lesson. Had Gard not put his hands on Howard then it's on Howard. But he did and it escalated after that.
Or how about don’t make inflammatory comments to the opposing coach in the handshake line which is what actually started the nonsense? Why do you want to jump straight past that? The only truly wrong things done were Howard grabbing the guy by the shirt and Howard punching the other guy in the face.

This was just last season and Coward didn’t have an issue in the line then. So what changed? Oh yeah he lost… He’s perfectly fine whenever he wins but he’s a sore loser whenever his team doesn’t get it done. Gard even slapped him on the left shoulder. No punches thrown then…

Winning with class is easy, losing with class isn’t.

I think a lot of NBA players have a chip on their shoulder that they use to motivate themselves - not sure this translates well to college coaching. To me the best college coaches have a continuous intensity and attention to detail and do not depend on working themselves into a rage to be effective.

This just seems like a situation where a kid still lives inside an adult’s body. Penny is the same way with some of his childish remarks but he isn’t slapping other coaches in the head during handshake line. Coward needs to seek mental help.

agree to disagree. The professional side works both ways. A coach walks by you, they want nothing to do with the situation but once you engage that person by stopping them to get their attention then "professionalism" is gone. I'm not siding with Howard or Gard, but the situation could have been avoided by both sides.

He engaged because of Howard looking at him and saying, “I will remember that $hit.” It’s reasonable to stop him to explain. Howard initiated it. If you don’t want a response, then don’t say anything.

Howard is nuts. He had his team trapping in the back court - how can he object to the other team calling a TO?
Right.

The outcome was no longer in doubt, but if the losing team is still trying to force a turnover, what is wrong with the winning team calling a timeout to prevent it from happening? Should Wisconsin have just given the ball away on the in-bounds pass to avoid hurting Howard's feelings?

There were only 15 seconds left when Wisconsin in-bounded the ball, so the shot clock was off. Wisconsin wasn't trying to run up the score. They were just trying to run out the game clock without giving Michigan another possession. Either the game is over or it's not. The losing coach doesn't get to have it both ways. It was childish for Howard to get upset over the timeout.

Having said that, Gard should not have cared that Howard was being childish. Gard had done nothing wrong, and shouldn't have felt the need to explain the timeout. If Howard wanted to act like a snot-nosed kid, that's on him. Gard should have ignored the handshake snub and kept going.
