Obama's "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was false information that he knew at the time. His own plan architects noted it.

It's a significant lie as it rallied support for a fundamental changing of an industry that represents 1/6 of the economy.

guessing that one gets a pass too.

Of course but only because he had good intentions and LG supported him.

You all are omitting my point that it has to be intentional. The right's disdain for Fauci, which is largely based on garbage science they wish was real, does not qualify because there is no viable case to be made that he was intentionally spreading false information.

Or even put another way, spreading information he would have reason to know is false.

We can debate the criteria all day, my point is that if we are agreed that we ought not cut off misinformation prior to publication then the best tool available is to create an after-the-fact disincentive to those perpetuating it.

The following persons would be subject to scrutiny and likely fines, in my estimation:

and he admitted to at least 2 lies (he considered noble lies) - masking and heard immunity levels. he said these things publicly (the admissions).

conveniently forgotten by our arbiter of all things true, misleading and intentionally false.

there are others as well
@lawgator1 This is from Slate. I bet you love Slate.

The U.S. Government’s Noble Lies About COVID-19

They count at least four (4) episodes of deliberate misinformation. Two of which Fauci is on record, just flat out lying (noble lies).
Masks & Herd Immunity as already noted above.

Here’s the Herd Immunity lie in case you forgot -
When polls said only about half of all Americans would take a vaccine, I was saying herd immunity would take 70 to 75 percent. Then, when newer surveys said 60 percent or more would take it, I thought, “I can nudge this up a bit,” so I went to 80, 85.

He lied about the data. He presented false data - to the public.

Name an issue in which the Democrats have NOT gone off the deep end.

Ha: It's just the opposite. It's the political right that freaks out about everything---gays, trans, Covid, the media, free speech. We've seen
how venal, nasty, dishonest and desperate conservatives have become. Right-wing media is a big part of the problem as it trafficks in disinformation
and conspiracy bull$hit. Disinformation---the intentional dissemination of information that is known to be false, or very likely to be false, as part of an effort to deceive people--is not free speech. Lying about vote fraud for weeks/months when there is not a scintilla of evidence supporting is not free speech; it is disinformation aimed at influencing people. It's what the gangster does and has been doing for many years.. Disinformation = intentional lying, which is not free speech.

Well this is a free speech thread. Care to weigh in?

What’s your take on free speech?

Speaking of which, your OP is extremely misleading in that you 1) have omitted most Americans, of all parties, want more filtering of false information and 2) that its a combination of government and tech companies that Dems support filtering out false info more than Republicans. The lead of the story is:

Moreover, you are not asking the important question: why?

The reason is obvious to me, and that is that there has been a concerted effort by a combination of groups to mislead the American people in a manner that has, for the time being, been more at the expense of progressive causes than conservative ones. And it has had consequences.

Note the rise of people like MTG to positions of power, largely premised on National Enquirer-level research she has read on line about her pet peeves. This is a frequent issue for the extreme right in this country, and an echo chamber founded on clicks feeds it for financial gain.

Or, look at the concerted, organized effort of Russia or other foreign disinformation peddlers who have attempted, with varying degrees of success, to influence US elections.

Note I said "for the time being." That is because right now the amount of distortion and false information being promoted that attacks the Dems and the left in this country is much higher than the Republicans and conservatives. As discussed many times that has to do with the shifting demographics in the country and the resentment class which is ripe for the picking by those who make money appealing to that resentment.

Just remember there was another government in another place with a guy named Joey Goebbels calling the shots on what was true. You used the Soviet version, but either way it gets to who is the arbiter of "fact", and right now the biden administration is being about as honest with fact as Goebbels was. So, yeah, honesty would be nice, but not a government bigot's version of honest. @volinbham's comment about the "official" origins of Covid and what would be a censored alternative are enough to say that government shouldn't come anywhere near being the arbiter of truth.

Misinformation overload:

I didn't omit the information - I posted the link which directly says "most Americans..."

The reason it is now "most" is that Democrats have made a major change in their view - Republicans have stayed roughly the same.

The rest of your post is partisan blather and you've outed yourself as being in favor of the government restricting what it deems to be misinformation. Sadly, you'll get what you ask for I'm afraid.

It's always funny how dems are big on things like "freedom of speech" when they have the floor, and the view changes when the other side starts scoring points. They absolutely love presenting "fact" and cancelling the speech of others, but they really hate it when the same tactics are used against them.
