Pretty sure I borrowed that from the Bernhard Gunther series of books by Phillip Kerr. I highly recommend the books if you like a smart azz ex-Berlin detective who detests the Nazis but somehow seems to come out with some dents and dings. Kerr does a great job of writing interesting novels while infusing them with some real history. The later books are after the war, and somehow Gunther still keeps crossing path with Nazis wherever he goes. Generally at the end of the books Kerr describes how his fiction relates to history.
