Who Wants Butch Fired?

CBJ and his staff need at least 4 years to build this program back up with recruiting and stealing a win or two each season.

The problem is they offset that one stolen win with multiple embarrassing blowout losses + loss to Vandy. If they keep up that ratio of positive vs negative surprises they will not see year 4 (if they lose to UK tomorrow they may not see year 2).

UK could blow the Vols out tomorrow and Butch is going nowhere.

Not right now but he would be on the serious watch list starting next year (another blowout or two which are almost guaranteed followed by empty Neyland would force AD to move really quickly if he wants to save his own job).

The only way Butch gets fired ever is if it benefits the university financially. Meaning paying his buyout is less costly than loss revenue. If ticket sales, merchandise sales, and donations drop to the point where they can't afford to keep him, that's when he'll be in trouble. That won't happen unless he misses a bowl next yesr and the year after. We better hope he makes it because I have no confidence the administration can hire a decent football coach. They always shoot for the dirt.

Agreed - it would be by far the best outcome if Butch does make it - as long as that means few years down the road we are challenging for actual championships and not considering 8-4 or even 9-3 years success. I remember how much heat Fulmer used to get for losing that 1 game every year to Florida so it's hard to settle on any coach who is not likely to eventually get us back to that type of standard and expectation. I just have such hard time believing our bearcat OC and DC will ever get us anywhere close to that (CBJ on the other hand does seem to be able to recruit as well as Fulmer used to when he was younger and motivated).

If you're recruiting good and coaching good, you don't have to steal wins. I know what you're talking about, though. Depending on next year, there might not be a year four for Jones.

We must keep Butch, there is not one coach in America that would take the UT job at this point, not one!

You are delusional if you believe that. Keeping Butch is good, but don't pretend UT couldn't attract any other good coaches.

I only read a few responses, but my answer isn't in the poll. Next year is going to be just as tough as this year, but I want a team that brings the fight 12 times next year. I want a team that improves over the season, not regresses. I want a fundamentally sound team that doesn't make bad mistakes. Wins and losses are significant, but they aren't the end all, be all to determine this season or next season. I really don't think I'm asking for too much. Going into mid October, I thought we had found a coach that could do that. Now I'm unsure to put it lightly.

Volfanbill, that is an understandable response. I believe that this team actually exhibited two separate trajectories: improvement over the course of the season up through the South Carolina game and then regression as we pushed deeper into the late October/November gauntlet. We sustained significant injuries to three of our four scholarship quarterbacks, which made the already challenging process of establishing cohesion within our passing game even more problematic, due to extreme inexperience at both the signalcaller position and the wide receiver corps. The decline/regression was more pronounced on defense, where we had to play a number of starters far too many plays per game due to chronic injuries and suspensions, most notably to Maurice Couch, Curt Maggett, Riyadh Jones and Trevarris Saulsberry. Butch hinted at the possible negative repercussions of this situation before they began to fully manifest themselves in the Alabama, Missouri and Auburn games. Defense and special teams which were already suboptimal in terms of depth and team speed gave all they had but, quite simply, wore down almost to the breaking point over the course of the last month.

Are you familiar with the previous coaching search? I'd like to hear some good coaches that would take this job right now.

Blah, that's just more reasoning of why we aren't good. I KNOW we aren't any good. We don't have depth, we don't have experience, etc. But from the USCe game on, we haven't had passion or desire. That has nothing to do with depth, talent, experience, etc. That's on coaches getting the team fired up to play. So far we have a coach with a lot of fancy cliches and not much else.. It actually makes me miss Pixie Dust.

Outstanding post.

Yes!

Hustle is not dependent upon talent.

Man, I feel like all our fan base has done since 2005 is call for people to be fired. It's exhausting.

I'm good with Butch and his staff for a few more seasons before I want to start another coaching search.

All these posts about there being "no passion", "no desire" and "they quit" are getting old.

They are slowing down because of depth, period. This is football. Where you beat the **** out of each other and when you have NOBODY to give you a rest for 5 months it takes it's toll.

Go take a gander in the recruiting forum for proof. All of the visitors seem to have one thing in common during interviews. They all make comments on how surprised they are at how bonded the team is. How they all support Butch and swear he will get the job done. They also love to point out that we have NO DEPTH.

I can't stand people that just sit here and ***** all day just to *****.
