I have a question. I have never followed recruiting much until CLK came here, but there seems to be almost a desperation to get more than enough O Linemen in here. I looked at the roster and we have 9 or 10 young, good sized OL's(doesn't include Daniel Hood who seems undersized for that side of the ball) that range from RS freshman, transfers, to Douglas and Shaw that will now have some experience in this offense. The question(s): Do these guys suck? Why such a need for SO many O linemen?
They do not suck, but when you are asking TEs to gain weight it does not compare.
Here is the bottom line, players who are the calibre of the kind this staff can bring in are on the MINORITY with this current roster.
Kiffin has more than hinted at the fact that he wants to see big time talent upgrades.
Chris Donald, Eric Berry, Rico McCoy, even M Hardesty...
Now....Janzen Jackson, Bryce Brown etc.
We do not have all junk at the sophomore and junior classes, but they are also not great by any stretch.
Now that people have seen what our zone blocking O line can do with good coaching, we want to get in lots of young fast talent that can protect our skinny QB of the future and open holes for a RB group that in 2 years could be nations best.
I hope that makes sense.
We also lost lots of OL who because of weight and discipline did not want to stick around in the Kiffin era. Plus we lose 6 to graduation.
I love the Sullins brothers, but Alabama has no similar stories with walk ons because they recruit better under Saban than we did under Fulmer the last few years of his reign.
A bad class for Kiffin would be around 10. He will never be below top 20 like Fulmer was several times. He wants to get a number 1 class this year and then top 5 with regularity afterwards.
He wants USC, Texas, Ohio State, Florida, Alabama and Tennessee to all be about equal in terms of top talent every year. I believe he will be able to do it.
