Who would Florida hire if they fire Mullen?

I think the Gators know who they "want". Who they get may be another matter.

We disagree. I would strongly, very strongly maintain that FL had Mullen fired with an immediate replacement. E.g. Harsin to Auburn. The money in these programs are from high level, millionaire corporate types. They just don't fly of the handle without an existing parachute i.e. a new coach. Who that is, I have no idea.

You think he is ready for the bigtime and a pressure cooker of a job like Florida?

Honestly I don't know a ton about him but it seems significant that several large programs have tried to lure him away. Hard to believe they were all wrong.

But you're right, Mullen seemed ready and capable too. In fact he seemed to be the right guy just two months ago and it all went to crap in short order.

Mullen has a $12M buyout. They just paid a big buyout to McElwein and to Muschamp 3 years earlier, so I have no idea what kind of deterrent that would be, especially given that they’re 1 year removed from the SECCG.

But this also seems like a year in which there aren’t a lot of “wow” names in the coaching cycle. Combine that with the fact that LSU, USC, Virginia Tech, and Washington are all in the market, and it seems like a bad year to be looking for coaches. All the names I can think of have some definite question marks…either making them unlikely to go to Florida or questionable to succeed. Honestly, Mullen kinda seemed like the perfect fit for them when they hired him.

-Urban Meyer- dude faked a heart attack to get out of that place. And that was BEFORE Kirby had Georgia rolling. If he comes back to college (and I doubt he will), it’s more likely to USC.

-Jamie Chadwell- Exciting offense, which they would love, but very inexperienced and none of good experience is at a P5 school.

-Dave Aranda- Former SEC DC so he knows the landscape. He’s done well at Baylor. But I don’t see Florida going for a defensive guy.

-Lane Kiffin- I don’t think they’d want him there. He’s more likely to go to Miami (which would be good for Tennessee, since he’d take a lot of the best prospects in Florida).

-Luke Fickell- Again, a defensive guy and a B10 guy who I don’t see as a fit. I think Fickell will have an opportunity soon at a school that fits him better.

-Billy Napier- Another guy who is destined to land a big time job soon. He might be the choice. But he hasn’t been a coordinator or head coach at the P5 level. That’s a big jump. Definitely not the resume Mullen had when he took the job.

Thoughts? Other names?

I don’t understand the hype behind Kiffin leaving the SEC for Miami of all places. Sure he has a ceiling at Ole Miss as their defense will never be good enough to beat the big boys.

The two top names that will be making moves to bigger jobs are Fickell and Aranda. After that, there could be a lot of coaches moving around inside conferences and what not. Once Aranda and Fickell move, then the schools that didn’t land them will be on watch. If Kiffin really wants to interview for LSU or Florida or even A&M if Woodward gets Jimbo to follow him to LSU, he’ll likely get it.

Miami has been talent rich for decades and yet no coach since Coker has done anything.

I personally believe that Kiffin stays at Ole Miss for Atleast another year. Would I be surprised if he somehow winds up at Florida or LSU? Not at all. I do think he would be on short list for Florida. I think LSU would have to be like USC and several of their top targets say no and he winds up getting an interview because of that.

Yeah. It’s like we have 10 people somebody is paying to post “kiffin to Miami” in any thread. Miami has won 4 of the last 5 and beat two ranked teams in that. They may not make themselves available.

Not gonna lie, I wanted Mullen at UT...When you guys got him it scared the hell out of me...Visions of Urban Meyers offense in my head and those nightmares came true as he beat the living hell out of us 4 years in a row...That is a hell of a lottery ticket he just hit so it will be interesting as to whom the Gators go after this time...Do you think they might try to play it a little cheaper this time?...Seems UT and UF have hired and fired more coaches than any 2 schools in the NCAA lately...I hope we have found ours for a long time...Good luck with your search, they can be stressful I know.

I have no problem with admitting I wanted Mullen at UT...... Expectations were low and he would have a lot of time to stabilize things.... he also had the luxury of walking into a program with a much heralded QB in JG that he would have 2-3 years minimum with. Grantham at the time was still a solid DC so the package of Mullen and Grantham was very appealing to me.

I still don't think we would have gone thru a new coaching search either...... crazy how he went from Trask to Trash (emory jones)...... Shouldn't be hard to lock up a 4/5 star QB at Florida.

Wave of support on swampgas for Napier based on recruiting.
Not to sound dramatic, but as an opposing fan, his recruiting prowess alone would make me nervous. He has a reputation as a tenacious recruiter and I think he has the hunger and drive to do it as a HC the same way an assistant would. His dad is/was a HS coach so he has a great grasp of how to approach the HS coach side of it and likely won’t burn bridges or be awkward about it ala Pruitt or Mullen.

I hope it's not Napier. He's ready for a Power 5 job and as someone has posted, he is organized, works hard, and is not high-strung like Mullen. He could be the one to bring Florida back to where they expect to be annually. Also, I really like him as a coach and I would have to start hating him if he goes to Florida.

Maybe those fans should donate some money and actually show up at games once in awhile. Miami “fans” are more pointless and worthless than any other major P5 fanbase, in terms have of having a say so. We all know decisions are predominantly made at the wand waving of the powerbrokers regardless, of which UM has none, and their fanbase comprised of sidewalk alumni will have zero bearing on what gets done down there.

Mark Stoops honestly seems like the perfect fit.

He has recruiting ties to the state of Florida and could stabilize the program.

Recruiting wouldn’t be an issue for Stoops considering he’s bringing in talent to Kentucky out of all places.

He can’t beat Tennessee with his best teams he’s automatically out.

Lane.
Florida Makes perfect sense to me. Seems they always hire a jerk. Coeds everywhere.
He has recruiting history in the state. He desperately wants to beat Saban.
Win the east and you have your opportunity without dealing with the West division.

I think he of all candidates would embrace the jorts and possibly consider coaching in them on the sidelines.
