Who would Tennessee’s DC candidates be if Banks leaves?

If he wants to be a HC he will definitely have offers if the defense is half as good as it's been to start the season.

I think there’s a decent chance Tim Banks is a mid-major head coach next year. He got some interviews this past offseason and the job he’s done building this defense hasn’t been unnoticed.

The good news is, when Heupel has to replace him, it’s going to be a very desirable job. Some names off the top of my head:

Dave Arranda- he’s been on the hot seat at Baylor. If he’s fired, maybe he’d want to get back in the SEC as a DC. This would be a home run.

Bryan Brown- Cincinnati- a former Ole Miss DB from Mississippi. Considered a good young DC and would have ties to DeRail Sims.

Manny Diaz- Not sure how realistic, but he’s at Penn State now. Used to coach at MTSU, so had ties to the state. Might want to get back in the SEC.

Other names?
If Tennessee finishes with a top 20 defense, I think he'll be getting a better opportunity than a mid-major job. West Virginia and Virginia Tech could potentially be looking for new HCs at the end of the year, not to mention any open jobs that come up when the Florida job gets filled.

Rodney Garner does not want to be a DC
Garner agreed to come as our DC with Kevin Steele if we had hired him at one point (either when we hired Pruitt or when Steele was our interim afterwards), but that was years ago and he may no longer want it.

VA Tech isn't firing Pry after this year. They were very encouraged last year with his run and are patient.

I am not thinking any further ahead than the OU game and the whopping that Bank's D is gonna put on those Sooners. But if I were Banks and if a mid-major came knocking, I probably wouldn't open the door because with two more successful years with the Vols a major will be knocking.

I agree. His hard work is really paying off this season and he's developing a juggernaut. A few more years with a D this successful and he will land a big fish.

I don't think Banks is going to leave us after one good year as DC. How many great seasons did Kirby and Venables have to string together before getting an acceptable HC offer? Same thing for Manny Diaz, Pat Narduzzi, and Dave Aranda. Banks may eventually get a head coaching job, but history tells us that it'll take a few more years like this before that opportunity comes along....

And by that time, Brent Venables may actually be an option because Oklahoma got absolute screwed by the SEC scheduling process. They look like a 5-7/6-6 team right now and it gets worse in 2025 with an OOC game against Michigan. Maybe I'm crazy but I wouldn't be shocked if they go 4-8 next year.

Gee, if I recall from the offseason, there was a fairly strong contingent of VNites who wanted to fire Banks, so like, looks like he should leave vs getting fired, especially if we win the Natty, right??

Banks's probable successor is already on staff in William Inge.
