Learn your Tennessee history. Dean Nathan Dougherty promoted General Neyland to Head Coach in 1926 so Tennessee could finally beat Vanderbilt. Vandy was 17-2-2 against Tennessee prior to that.

Seems like with almost 100 years of history passing since your 1926 reference that "rivalry" phrase would be commonly used. I have never heard it either and I am also an alumnus. I am also a man, I'm 40.

No, just surprising to me that a 63 year old could be that disrespectful. I'd expect it from my generation, but not from someone old enough to have great grand children.
Simmah down a little there broham. Only 63 year olds that have great grand children live in alabammer. And you might want to consider a username change. :p

It was a long time ago. I think their recent success against us refueled a forgotten (by some) rivalry. I think it's most significant because getting our tails kicked by them resulted in the hiring of the greatest college football coach of all time (IMO) and changed the course of Tennessee football history.

A little success and Franklin's personality also made their fan base very annoying fueling my hatred of anything Vanderbilt athletics. Anyone else living in the Nashville area will probably agree. We'll see if all of the new Vandy fans will still be around when balance is restored.

Send Freak an email if you want to in the contact us button at the top of the page. A buncha folks have changed their usernames over the years and kept their post count.

Definitely worth the effort.

I've done it twice. Freak's a busy dude. Also, if he makes me keep my name, it might keep others from creating names after coaches, so it actually benefits him more to not let me change it.:ermm:

1926? That constitutes what we would call a rivalry at this point? I also live in Nashville, and even my Vanderbilt friends probably wouldn't say that it's currently a rivalry. Yes, they've closed the gap (partly because they're having their best stretch in school history, and UT is having their worst), and they've beaten UT a couple of times recently, but I still wouldn't say its a rivalry. Now, if it stays on this trajectory for a few more years, then alright.

Butch gives the team a day off from practice and the end result is a 3 page thread debating the merits of the "marble city" label for Knoxville?

Well, that's uncalled for. Show me a history book that refers to Knoxville as the Marble City. As a matter of fact, show me anyone that commonly refers to Knoxville as the Marble City.

How sad the state of an older generation thinking they are better than a younger generation because they never had any new-fangled electronic devices.

Isn't it past your bedtime, grampa?

Actually you are the one misinformed. The history books used in our education system over the last twenty years have been modified to promote liberal fantasies. The high school history books of today completely omit the roles of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Pope John Paul II in promoting freedom for all of Eastern Europe. They ignore the end of the Cold War.

And now we have Communist Core being promoted.

What's hilarious is you equating a new, supposedly-liberal education to me not knowing that Knoxville was once commonly called the Marble City. I guess only republicans teach about city nicknames.

Save that stuff for the political forum

Not that it matters but I went to UT as well and have never heard Knoxville known as Marble City. I have heard Scuffletown, but it was from a commercial on TSR

I just can't wait for practice reports to come back today.
