Due to Knoxville being a major center of marble distribution in the early 1900s, its nickname soon become "The Marble City."

City of Knoxville - Knoxville Fun Facts

Thanks for the link, some pretty cool stuff in there. I got a good laugh at this one.

"In 1901, Kid Curry, a member of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch, shot a couple of deputies and escaped out the back window of a business on Central Avenue in what is now the Old City. He was captured, brought to the Knoxville Jail, but escaped and was last seen riding the sheriff’s stolen horse across the Gay Street Bridge."

Dear Vandy:
Rivalry application denied. Come back when you are at least within 40 games of us in the series. Which probably won't be anytime soon.

Vick and Bill's had the best hamburgers in all of Marble City. Let the fireworks begin.

^^^^ What he said. But until then the game won't be called no made up name like "Hatred in the Hills" ... more like the "Stomp Candy a Puddle an Walk it Dry" or "Show 'Em Their Own A ...uh Porthole" game or some such.

Well, that's uncalled for. Show me a history book that refers to Knoxville as the Marble City. As a matter of fact, show me anyone that commonly refers to Knoxville as the Marble City.

How sad the state of an older generation thinking they are better than a younger generation because they never had any new-fangled electronic devices.

Isn't it past your bedtime, grampa?

I've never heard it called Hatred in the Hills either OP - If anything, that's simply how Vandy fans feel towards UT - definitely not a rivalry name

I propose (someone who cares enough .. it ain't me) jump on Wikipedia and edit the "rivalry" name to the "Vols Once Again Drag Commodedoors and Their Little Anchor Through a Puddle" game...or some such.

there was a Marble City Brewing in Knoxville, until the lawsuit.

Marbles in beer or did the water from Little Pigeon River cause the beer to "glow" at night?

Marble City Brewing was a subsidiary of Champion Mill Company

That's disturbing information. Weren't they just renamed? For some reason I thought they were affiliated with Bearden Beer Market.

Just because you win 2 years in a row for the first time since the Great Depression doesn't make this a rivalry. Once you guys win 8 in a row let me know. Until then it's just Vandy

2012 still stings for me. I'm ready for a game like 1994 again.

There is not a person on this planet left that remembers when this was a rivalry. Its sad but people are now trying to force this into rivalry status. why?
