UT has to protect the basketball program and the only way to do that was to fire Pearl. It's not like they're doing this for no apparent reason. Why wasn't everyone this upset when the possibility of him being fired was first mentioned last year?

Because they don't care about UT basketball. They only care about the Tan Man.

Most people dont look at the effect it has on the school. They look at the effect it will have on the team/sport.

I think it's just ignorance. They don't understand that we really have no choice, and the only person to be mad at is Bruce. He's the one who backed us into this corner.

Why are people asking why people are upset? What do you expect? Yeah, it had to be done, but a majority of Vol fans loved the guy and at a minimum need some time to work through this.

Pearl had a charismatic personality that won over the UT fans. He also had success with the program. It is very unfortunate that he used terrible judgment and placed himself and the program in such a terrible situation with violation of NCAA rules. There was really no choice but to fire Pearl. UT would have made a terrible decision to allow the program to be destroyed to keep Pearl. No coach is above the program, including Pearl. I'm sure this was a difficult decision for the UT administration and one they absolutely would have preferred not to make. However, it is what it is and true fans need to support the program more than ever now and move forward toward finding a great replacement coach that can exceed Pearl's accomplishments and won't tarnish the reputation of the program and university.

If you really think we are off the hook now that he is fired you're wrong, we will still get punished with or without him.

UT has to protect the basketball program? Who cares if we did indeed get a 2 year post season ban. We aren't gonna make the tourney the next 2 years now anyways

Exactly. This is something that had to be done. I don't understand the sudden outburst now that it's actually done.

This is it right here. The NCAA has put UT in an awful position -- keep him and we absolutely ream you, or fire your popular coach and your fans ream you. Most of the people rending their clothes over this have no idea what a bad spot the UT administration folks are in.

I wish Hamilton could come out at the press conference and explain this, but no doubt all the lawyering involved makes speaking frankly about it in public impossible.

The anger will temper somewhat I guess, or be re-directed, when the punishment is handed down that we have to deal with for the next year or so. Unfortunately for Bruce, this too was probably made even more necessary due to the LK era, though short as it was, the NCAA spotlight was already on us.

Because Hamilton's proven incompentent with his last 2 hires, and people are nervous about him being successful replacing Pearl

People are upset because they are afraid of the unknown.

Yes, but it won't be anywhere near as severe. You're wrong if you don't think negotiations have been going on between UT and the NCAA
