Why are people upset with UT firing Pearl?

I don't think you understand what you are forgiving him for.

That's right. All of those behind him are ignorant and you are easily the most informed one of the bunch. Thank you Mr. Righteous for putting us all on the right path.

Because in general, Vol fans don't know enough about the situation to know that that's what was on the table. They think we're just firing Pearl because we won't "forgive" him. They don't know that we're basically doing it at the point of a gun.

Maybe a few, but I would argue that many of us understand that the next 2 years are going to be rough either way. I advocated to keep Bruce until we just couldn't from a PR perspective. It sounds like that's what happened.

That's the exact point in a nutshell.

If the NCAA hammered UT basketball to the degree that it was rumored they were going to if we kept him, then it wouldn't be a rough two years, it would be more like 3 or 4. And that's assuming that Pearl could step right back in and not be just a shell of what he was before. There's just no way that Pearl himself is worth it.

A lot of people, smart and dumb, think we should keep him.

A lot of people, smart and dumb, think we should have fired him.

I am not sure I can decide, but I don't hate the guy. Certainly what he did wasn't smart, but I can understand why he did what he did.

These threads are a little tiresome, but that's to be expected.

Good point. I don't either.

He broke a rule, lied about it, apologized, and broke another rule. He was wrong, and I hope he truly believes what he says in the end about being wrong for it.

In the end, like him or not its hard to argue with what he gets from it. That is not taking in to account what the NCAA is proposing with him staying or leaving which is a different subject.

If that was truly the case than your probably right. I guess only the folks in the know will ever know. I did read an article today that cited an NCAA official stating that the firing of BP will likely have no bearing on whether Tennessee gets a quick summary judgemet or not.

The same people whining now about Pearl being fired, would also be the same ones calling for his head after we got killed for 3-4 years in a row because of these penalties. Fair-weather fans in every sense of the term.

Honestly I think we should save our money and hire a community college coach for 2 years and wait it out to hire a good coach when all the sanctions are gone. In the mean time since we hired a Community College Coach for very little money we should use the rest of the money on a really good half time show. Get like the blue man group, Gary Busey, Charlie Sheen, or the Atlanta Hawks halftime dunk team to come to our basketball games and do the trampoline dunks at half time.

I think this is our only chance of bringing a entertaining product on the court for the next couple of years.

UT has to protect the basketball program and the only way to do that was to fire Pearl. It's not like they're doing this for no apparent reason. Why wasn't everyone this upset when the possibility of him being fired was first mentioned last year?

It's the same with Barry Bonds fans. They can't seem to grasp that the reason that he was a great player was because he cheated! Without being able the cheat, Pearl is another 8-8 SEC coach.

Well, that's two winning coaches fired. Phil was fired becasue he couldn't beat BAMA, UGA and Florida more often. He had two losing seasons in 14 and left with the best winning record at UT in quite sometime. He probably had the best winning percentage at Knoxville. Bruce made a mistake-that's twice. Once at another school. Guess he'll learn. Both coaches will always "be a Vol." Bruce brought the men's basketball program a long way and now I wonder if UT will find someone to do as well. The Vols made the NCAA tourney all 6 years Bruce was coach and came within a point of making the Final 4 in 2007. I saw that game on TV last night and wondered how the Vols could go from 20 up just before the 1st half and fall apart the 2nd half. Believe they shot too early at times just like this years team. I wish Bruce the best. Now it's time to back the Lady Vols and wait for football season. GO VOLS!

Because they don't care about UT basketball. They only care about the Tan Man.

Wow... this place must have been on meltdown today. I was posting how happy I was about the possibility of getting a new coach and it got closed TF down...

There are a bunch of fair weather fans in this world.

We win? Go Vols! We lose? Go Vols! Good coach? Go Vols. Bad coach? Go Vols! We compete with honor? Go Vols! We cheat? Go home!

College athletics have a point and a purpose. The point is not to make money, most schools don't. The point is not to win, remember, most schools are average. The point is to give opportunities to give kids a chance and to teach valuable lessons. Too bad that so many forget that.

Everyone else is doing it is a fine reason to sell part of your soul.

One more thing. If you didn't get excited about UT BB before Coach Pearl and if you didn't attend games pre-CBP, then I have about as much respect for your opinion as I do a Vandy fan's.

Finally the only remaining coach in Div 1 who was making illegal contact with recruits and lying about it has been fired, we can all go to bed and rest easy now. Thank God for the NCAA.

I am confused, did we make a decision on the Atlanta Hawks trampoline dunkers or what?
