Why college athletes shouldn't be paid?

Yeah... running a state institution by cutting out the waste is a communist principle. Cuba and the CCCP were swimming in money at their primes.
The fact your ridiculous world view sees colleges as gloirifed versions of ITT doesn't make it so. What you call waste, most people with an IQ above room temperature call enlightenment.

You're the one babbling about how things should be done for the benefit of "the state."

Yeah, God forbid someone have some depth to their education.

Just because you are can quote a few lines of some play written 400 years ago or took some class on social injustice in Belize doesn't mean that you have added depth, nor does it really make you that much more interesting at a dinner party or at a job interview. It just shows that a person is consumed with the trivial and the esoteric. It will probably make that individual more bitter at the world as opposed to being a skilled employee.

Your posts are getting progressively worse. Given your history here, that's hard to believe. My love of the trivial and the esoteric has apparently served me well by your standard, because I'll be glad to compare asset sheets with you anytime you'd like.

I suggest you move to japan.

May I ask why you waste your time being obsessed with UT football?

Benefit the state in that you will not a citizenry that goes around reciting poems and spouting off meaningless ramblings from some 19th century Armenian philosopher isn't exactly a tough decision to make. Most of these classes are nothing more than breeding grounds for communist thought anyway... which makes them all the more worth purging.

There are too many lawyers, also.

You commenting on the intellectual value of something is comparable to David Hasselhoff critiquing Beethoven.

Yeah, because there's nothing more interesting than listening to a bunch of undereducated drones babble on about their jobs because they don't know anything else. Captivating.

Because it is a pastime. Pastimes have no business being the foundation of a university education, at least not anymore. If someone wants to learn how to be a a bagpipe player, the state shouldn't have to pay for it.

Now if that pastime generates revenue (football), then that is a totally different story all together. But since most of these activities are net money losers, there is none reason for the state to be involved with them.

The type of trivial/esoteric crap hat is refering to is filler people use at coffeehouses and dinner parties for conversation. That is about all most of the crap they teach in universities nowadays is good for anyways...

In your meaningless opinion. The fact you apparently found it too taxing to learn a trade and get an education at the same time doesn't mean the rest of the world is so intellectually limited.

The UT athletic department gets exactly 0 state money. Why do you insist on blathering about things you know absolutely nothing about?

Shockingly there are things i learned in my non economic and business classes that I know find relevant in my current job. For instance, my writing classes certainly have helped me write presentations and proposals. My history classes have helped get a long term perspective on the market and politics. Etc etc. A lot of these classes could easily be put in the "useless" major category.

I know a lawyer making a mil a year who was a classics major.

For every one such as yourself that may be living the American dream, there are dozens that spin their wheels in trivial majors that wind up getting jobs that are dead ends and spend the rest of their lives bitter and salty at the world, wondering why is life so unfair to them because they have a PhD in Russian Literature and all the do is pour coffee. Whether it was hard work or luck or whatever, the overwhelming majority of people that follow that path are miserable.

And it's their own damn fault they chose that path.

Accountability for one's actions is overrated isn't it?

That's their personal problem, not the university's for offering the courses. You are essentially saying fat ass people should blame the restaurants they eat in.

You know what is worse than that? A group of pseudo-intellectuals sitting around talking about the works of Jack Kerourac, talking about some trendy new off-Broadway play, or some braggard rambling and boasting about himself. [FONT=Arial,Bold][FONT=Arial,Bold]

I never stated or insinuated that the state did give the UTAD money... I clearly put in parenthesis football because I was actually highlighting the point that our program at least makes revenue. Now on the flipside, if football/UTAD was losing money hand over fist, there is no reasonable way you can defend using state money to do that.

So since pretentious people exist no one should be allowed to learn about these things? Should be ban football because of TO and pacman jones?

To a certain extent, I am... if that restaurant is state owned. Not that there isn't any blame or responsibility that doesn't belong to that individual. It is a reach however to compare a compulsive adult eater to an 18-22 year old having to make a decision about their future career choice.

To use your analogy, if the state is going to provide a service or support an institution, then should it provide filler, fluff and empty calories (worthless classes) at that restaurant (university)? Or should the state look to teach the people how to fish and cook for themselves (e.g. learn a trade and become a productive member of society)?

It depends on whether the goal is to teach a trade or provide higher education.
