Why do Memphis people hate UT?!?!

I've not read back so forgive me.......IT'S 350 MILES FROM KNOXVILLE. I'm not concerned about looking it up but if anybody wants to tell me how many D1 schools are closer than 350 miles to Memphis I would be willing to listen. Until then, Memphis is, was always will be 350 miles from Knoxville. Great Effort but no dice.

HaHaHa.....this might be the most ridiculous thread I have ever read. Yes, Memphis has a lot of "racial sensitivity" as our eloquent mayor (King Willie Herenton) kindly puts it, and yes there is a LOT of crime, poverty, foreclosures, etc. However, I've lived here my entire life (except 4 glorious years in Knox county) and I absolutely cherish my time in Memphis and the experiences I've been a part of in this city. I know people from all over this state, and the most culturally accepting and affluent people in this state, without a doubt, either live in Memphis or have been transplanted from another region. The ignorance of this blog from people who REALLY have no idea what they're talking about except what they might have seen on The First 48 is kind of creepy. This sort of conversation is exactly why people from the south are stereotyped as morons........because a lot of us (especially those who only know one culture or way of life) are extremely obtuse and unable to accept anything foreign. This thread makes me really sad; when we should be celebrating our staff's great accomplishments of today, we are instead ripping apart nearly 1,500,000 of our instate brothers...........Go Vols!

The main reason some Memphis people hate UT is because people from ET and MT always say disrespectful stuff like I've read in this thread. Like it or not, Memphis is part of Tennessee, so it's disingenuous to have pride in our own school and/or state while dogging our largest and most culturally diverse city.

it's a dump.....end of story. Detroit or St. Louis may be bigger dumps.....maybe. It is part of Tennessee.....the bunghole of Tennessee. I say wipe it clean.

But if we got recruits from Memphis it would be awesome right?

if they wanna get out of Memphis sure. If not, go to U of M or wherever. I know Bartlett, Cordova, Germantown, etc. have very nice areas...but for well over a million people...I'd say 70% of the city is a &hit can. No offense intended if you like it. I don't mind visiting...heck, I stayed 4 months once, but I watched my back every minute. The first 28 days I was there during that time, 24 murders. Someone should clean it up.

Sorry if it offends anyone. No, come to think of it I'm not. I visit the city in question several times a year. I've traveled this entire country and spent extensive time in each state (except North Dakota). I'm just giving my opinion. I have not brought race into this at all and I will not. Memphis is not a complete black/white issue. It's a corrupt political system, corrupt police, etc. It is my opinion that the city is a dump and needs cleaning up. I'm not some outsider who doesn't go regularly. I'm just the one with the balls to state his opinion....here's another. I really enjoy spending time in Atlanta.

So if you turds want to boo hoo hoo over my opinion of one of our cities....go right ahead. It's a dump.

My routine doesn't change when going out regardless of the city. My car was broken into three times in Knoxville over 5 years but not once in 14 years in Memphis - and I have a much nicer car now.
Yeah, but you don't have a magic phone that roving gangs of Hispanic NBA fanatics are dying to steal.

Well I'll say it!!! There are a bunch of black people but you know what...there are a bunch of white people here too! This is a racially divided city and it sucks living here at times but it's home....so not everybody in Memphis loves Ole Miss, Arky, or whoever...granted a bunch do!

There are thugs and poor white trash here that makes Memphis the sewer of the state but there are some good people here like MYSELF THAT BLEED ORANGE!!!

Oh and I'm black too!

GO VOLS!!!!

The only thing worse than hillbillies who've never been to Memphis are Memphians who are uber-critical. The question I have is, as an educated black, male what are YOU doing to better the community?

And distance. Imagine if you had to drive from Knoxville to Memphis and back every time you wanted to visit home. That's about 14 hours in the car, including stops for gas, food and convenience. You basically can't make a weekend trip home. It's a chore.

Are you driving a horse and buggy? It's a 5-5.5 hour trip tops.

Yeah, they aren't gonna make the Playoffs. Hopefully they can just pick up some wins and finish the season off somewhat strong...

And lock your doors and hide your wallet as you walk or drive to each one.

This just shows that you are truly ignorant or have never been to Memphis. The entertainment areas downtown are the SAFEST to be in. There is a huge police presence and tons of people. Like any MAJOR city, we have parts of towns that you do not go into.

Since crime is such a huge issue, I'm sure you've never been to Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, Chicago, Miami, or any other culturally diverse cities with tons of attractions either. Better just hit the Cracker Barrel and bowling alley for your dining and entertainment.

I thoroughly enjoy Memphis for the culture. Take in an NBA game one night. A broadway play the next. Have some great food anytime with literally 100's of places to choose from (and I'm excluding the chain restaurants). On the weekends you can check out the symphony, zoo, or any number of museums.

I agree, I grew up in the Memphis area (Oakland,TN) and have lived in Germantown, Cordova, and Collierville before moving to Chattanooga. There is good and bad in any city in Tennessee. Memphis certainly does have it's share of bad but it also has a lot to offer like you stated. If it wasn't for the long drive I would enjoy my trips home a lot more.

The tourist areas are safe. I've enjoyed a few nights out on Beale and I would rank it as safe or safer than Nashville's 2nd ave. It's when you get outside of the tourist areas it can get rough quick. Crime and corruption are real in Memphis....very real. The crime piece of it is actually worse per capita than the cities you've listed.

Number 2 with a bullet: Memphis ranks 2nd in violent crimes despite drop last year : Local News : Memphis Commercial Appeal
