Why do we claim 1967 as a national title in football?

The consensus selectors were already acknowledged by that point. Litkenhous has never been a consensus selector.

Litkenhous was not a poll. It was a mathematical system, kinda like Sagarin.

The irony of an Alabama fan lecturing about how championships are claimed. Too funny.

It was always mythical until the Bowl Coalition and later the BCS got 1 vs 2 at the end of the year. But . . . the official NCAA record book recognizes "championships" that were awarded from several different polls. When more than half the polls agreed, it was considered a consensus championship. That's the reason there's always a difference between claimed championships and consensus championships. [/dissertationcomplete]

You only have to go back to 2003 to see a split national champion. The BCS champion was LSU but the AP awarded the NC to USC.

The Bowl Coalition or BCS didn't mean squat in the eyes of the NCAA.

None of this has ever meant squat. My only point is that the record book recognizes it.

I know. Just didn't feel like spending time differentiating.

Gotcha.

The math systems are the worst. They make absolutely no sense, and I find it kind of pathetic that any school would base a national championship claim on one. And yes, I absolutely include Alabama in that sentiment.

The fact that so many rejoiced in the inclusion of the math systems in the BCS was ridiculous.

The record book recognizes every selector that's ever been nationally published. That doesn't really lend much legitimacy.

"If a laundromat in Tuscaloosa will name us national champions, I'll take it."

Bear Bryant

Said in the context of the 1966 screwjob. In the end, a couple of math systems did name Bama national champions, but the title isn't claimed.

We make fun of Bama fans a lot for claiming questionable titles, but I know we weren't better than USC and ou beat us in the orange bowl. Claiming 1967 has always been a mystery to me. Anybody know why?:hi:

You are fixing to see every school start claiming national championships if they were named the champs in any of the polls that were out. It is a pointless argument to try and get into since there was no real way of determing who was actually the best. That is why until 1998 you could have a shared national championship. Auburn is going back and looking for titles to claim right now. It is a big subject in this state. You want to talk annoying is listening to bammers and barners try to defend claimed titles. This why there is a college playoff now.

I agree. It's a terrible, laughable, absurd (insert however many negative adjectives you'd like) claim. It's also the only crap one Bama claims.

The Coaches Poll named Bama national champs before the bowl was played. That's how it was done. If the poll had been taken after the bowl, Bama wouldn't have gotten it. Kinda like the 10-0 '51 Tennessee team that was named national champs before losing to 9-0 Maryland in the Sugar. Sucks to be Maryland, but thems the breaks.

Once again, 41 was not the only one. Bama has multiple BS claims. 1930 is yet another. This is one topic that no bama fan has any room to comment on.

Bamawriter, you are neither a Bama nor a writer. It's an oxymoron, people from bammer can't write. In essence, go kiss your sister and you're stupid.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Bama's claim to 1930.

It's acknowledged by CFB Data Warehouse, and it's on the NCAA's list of consensus champions (not the list of every single selector in existence, but their consensus selectors.)

If we wanted to claim a NC, we could do it every year. Teams don't just claim it, someone else does and it is out of the hands of the team. Somebody else proclaimed it as they did every season since the roaring 20s. Only a troll would ask such a question.
