I honestly think the reason people think the country is in trouble is the growth, availability, positioning, and competition of media.

100% agree. you have 24 hour a day news networks and little content to fill it. If cnbc wasn't telling us all how horrible the economy is and how all these banks were going bancrupt 24/7 would it have actually happened?

this whole bad bank thing was a stupid idea from the get go. all they have to do is eliminate mark to market for a year, maybe 2, and let the market come back to reality.

I'm no advocating some kind of China-like controll of the media, but like you said wall-to-wall coverage about how the economy is going to hell in a handbasket isn't going to get people out buying and stimulating.

besides being far better educated and harder working (looked at averaged hours worked per worker) than 40 years ago. what does this generation do that is going to send us down the hole?

No, no, you misunderstand. I'm not saying the next generation is doing anything wrong. And I am not saying we are in danger of disappearing as a Republic anytime in the foreseeable future.

What I am saying is that when you look around the world at the countries we typically view as politically unstable, a frequent cause of their instability is a shrinking or unruly middle class. We are a long way from that, but you can see elements of it, I think.

With all this being said, I'm all about competition in business, but I think nothing good comes out of media outlets positioning themselves in a marketing sense with a segment of viewers (FNC, MSNBC, Ny Times, etc.)

It will never change, but I just think it's why everyone wakes up saying, "Oh S***", instead of "Hell Yeah!"

exactly. i'm not saying shut em down, but we live in a world where unfortunetly people beleive everything they hear on the news. and if the newsman are telling them that their money, house, and/or job isn't safe, the average person freaks out and it becomes a self fuffilling prophecy.

our middle class has the highest standard of living in the world. only in america can the middle class think it is their born right to own a home, own a car, and have hbo and if they don't have these things they get pissed.

If CNBC, Fox Business, and Bloomberg would get together and have a roundtable discussion with Erin Burnett, Rebecca Quick, Alexis Glick, Jenna Lee, and Betty Liu, I would watch that. :)

there is nothing at core wrong with this country. we've had stupid people here for 200 years. that wont change. every generation in history has thought the next generation is going to send us down the hole to hell. it hasn't happened yet.
Yes, but now the stupid people have enough other stupid people (67,000,000+), to be elected to office. We always took care of the stupid. Now, they run the show.
