The Manhattan District Attorney's Office is alleging that Donald Trump falsely and illegally categorized reimbursements to his lawyer (I assume that was Michael Cohen - his fixer, who is cooperating with the prosecution), in effort to cover up the payment to Daniels. I'm not familiar with what specific statutes are alleged to have been broken .... but that's crux of what the allegations surround.

She wasn't forced to sign a NDA. In her settlement negotiation, she got a sum of money for doing specific items, one of which was a NDA. If she didn't want to sign a NDA, she didn't have to. But in that case, she wouldn't have got paid.

Trump could claim this was as much to protect his business image as anything...

Paying someone is not a crime. NDAs are not illegal.
Attorney malpractice is an issue between the client and her attorney, which might be a crime. Is the attorney being indicted?

So at the very most a misdemeanor bookkeeping case where the SOL have expired.

.... Trump could claim that, but the timing of the $130K payment to Daniels, which was less than a month before the 2016 Presidential Election, and just after the Access Hollywood video had been released, makes any such claim dubious.

Trump's reputation was already taking a beating with the "Grab 'em by the pu$$y," video ..... The last thing the Trump campaign needed was something else just before a debate.

If I'm Trump, here is my argument

"I am a person who has had confidential Tax information linked to the press. The allegations raises by Ms. Daniels would be hurtful to the brand that I have built. Given how this alleged event occurred while I was on a work trip, my tax team advised me that an reasonable tax position would be to deduct this settlement as an ordinary and reasonable business expense. My tax team advised me that this position would be challenged by taxing authorities. Given that this position would be challenged, my accountants advised of another layer to reduce the chance of my confidential tax documents being released again. In no ways did this impact the overall result of my income statements or tax returns as my accounting team believed this settlement agreement to MS. Daniels was a valid expense for accounting and tax purposes."

She chose the money....

It would be dubious but for the fact that Trump has other settlement agreements out there for various other acts..

It's hard to believe but the one over on SECrant/tigerdroppings was even more unhinged. The one here is the kiddie pool, that one was the deep sea. I believe they deleted it after one of those final "This is the date Trump reveals his grand plan" predictions petered out.
