Why is Butch Jones (still) hated so much?

#3 on your list is by far my biggest reason for continued hate of that D-bag. His lack of decency to look for a real job reveals a lot about his character.
Who gave him the ridiculous buyout? Really look for another job that pays less? Yes the lack of integrity was there, but like our government paying folks more NOT to work. "Brick by brick" "All in all just another brick in the wall"

Seems that many threads turn into eith a Jones or Kiffin bashing thread. Don’t get me wrong; I hate CLK came in and ran half the team off and had virtually none of his recruiting class pan out and, Jones never could get over the hill. But, there seems to be more hatred towards Jones on VN threads than any of the other coaches and this includes Pruitt.

Is it because more was expected of him or that we didn’t really expect more from the other coaches? I mean, Pruitt could have completely devastated the program but yet he doesn’t seem the most disliked of our coaches. Jones was like forever and three coaches ago but, again, he’s beat down still and a lot.

Fair question. Beyond his personality and untruthfulness, my main problem with Jones was his coaching. He completely blew at least two wins for us by suddenly playing not to lose, for example. But the killer for me is him having Alvin Kamara and Jalen Hurd on the team and not even trying to creatively use them together out of the backfield. Jones could have had Thunder and Lightning coming out of some creative sets and causing massive confusion for defenses. I don’t recall Jones ever even trying to do this. I believe that lack of imagination (or stones) cost us a lot of points and a few games.

Can you imagine if Josh Heupel had those two guys in the backfield?

Was a good recruiter so the high expectations were higher. A lot of squandered talent, in game blunders, and his catch phrases and slogans got old quick. And lastly, a complete lack of self awareness while the program was self destructing.
Was he a good recruiter though or was it just the perfect storm of in state talent and legacy players a couple of years?

Everybody talks about the cigars and yes that is punk move, but the fact that he took a 30,000 dollar salary from bama so that he could milk every dime he could from UT because he knew he was a fraud and would(and did) get exposed as head coach shows what really shows what kind of person he is in my book.
This is the main reason he pisses me off. Dooley had a job right away after being fired. Butch wanted to screw Tennessee

Because he didn't lay the bricks right. A little uneven. Wasn't even the right color of bricks.

Brick by brick from someone who wasn't a brick layer.

1. The Bama cigar. Only a classless a$$clown would smoke a cigar with a team he had nothing to do with building/coaching over a team that he had built/coached.
2. The whole living off the buyout while taking next to nothing at Bama.

Those two things show the dude's character.
3. The talent that joker wasted.

I don't dislike Dooley. I don't dislike Pruitt even. Butch's lack of character makes me dislike him.

Because (1) we Tennesseans are predominantly Scots-Irish and always have to be hating someone, and (2) because there is no forum for anonymous, global, banking schemers who negatively impact our real lives and deserve our actual hate.

So, that leaves Butch Jones as our piñata-of-convenience.
Best answer in the thread.

Hey Nighthawk. I survived Nashville last weekend but Friday was a real test. Got there around 11:30 but traffic starting slowing about 20 miles before. It was start and stop all the way thru but I did take 65. GPS wanted me to take the by-pass which it later stated added 40 minuets. For reasons I never saw 65 S was a parking lot leaving Nashville. Coming back was fine other than a nasty thunderstorm in KY.

Hope you all don't have to deal with that traffic everyday. Thanks for tip.

Might've just been Memorial Day travelers. We drove to Indianapolis Thursday evening and what is usually a 4.5 hour trip took more than 6 hours. We were diverted off the Interstate in both Kentucky and Indiana. Driving back Monday was perfectly fine.

I remembered when he came to Neyland in 2010, with a decent Cincinnati team...I've never seen a coach get so bent out of shape with his face 10 different shades of red... Didn't know anything about him before that game but came away with a bad impression. Fast forward 2+ years and I saw on the ESPN crawl where UT hired Butch Jones as Football coach...My first impression was, you've got be kidding...LOL However, his introductory press conference where he arrogantly stated that he had the best staff in America was a bit too much for me...So I had him at arm's length during his tenure here at UT...Finally, stiffing UT with the buyout money by taking an analyst position at Bama, did it for me...Have no use for the guy...

I dislike Pruitt the most, but what made me dislike Butch Jones was that he never learned from his mistakes. He made the same, terrible in-game coaching decisions every year he was here. His clock management was beyond horrible, and it definitely cost us the 2015 Florida game. O-line play was always awful. The way he insisted on shotgun formation in short yardage situations, even though it never worked for us under him, is another example.

If there's one thing that drives me crazy, it's a person who is too stubborn and thick-headed to learn from their mistakes. In my opinion, it's a sign of very low character, and the way he has behaved after getting fired from UT, we have seen even more signs of low character from Butch.

I don’t really hate any former coach. I dislike Dooley and Pruitt and think they were waaaay in over their heads. I have zero respect for Butch. ZERO. He doesn’t deserve to be coaching young men of any age. He is what my grandmother would’ve called a carpet bagger, I’d assume. Always gave me the used car salesman vibe.

In addition to all that’s been mentioned, he just wasn’t a good coach. He wasn’t able to maximize the talent he had - he tried to force fit the team into the schemes he had already decided to play.

Butch’s first 9-3 season found few if any people posting here speaking poorly of him or his abilities. His second 9-3 season there were few who post here that did support him. It was due to his behaviors and coaching deficits that made their way to the light of day as the wheels came off the cart. I for one remain angry about and towards him because of his time on The Hill. Anything after that I could care less as he was thank God and Greyhound gone!

Why he didn't have more packages that put Alvin and Jalen on the field together is beyond me! That was almost a Reggie Bush/LenDale White level combo he hand on his hands and he never took advantage!
and John Kelly. He was a real revelation when Hurd walked out. I am not as down on Hurd as a lot of people.

I had no idea Kelly ran so hard and had so much talent. We were still potent with the Kamara-Kelly tandem.

Liked Butch and wanted him to succeed at UT. Still don’t mind him. What I gripe about is his stubbornness to adapt and getting rid of Jancek at DC.

Actually Jones is who I was hoping would be hired, didn’t know a lot about him other tha he did a pretty good job at Cincinnat. Like all coaches he did some questionable moves, I think he had it going for awhile, but when he got rid of Janfem it all went downhill.

i also thought Pruitt had it going when he won like 8 straight over two seasons. I thought he was just an old school football man. Not saying this is acceptable but it’s football when he was kicking whiteboards and grabbing the QB by the face mask he was winning. Not sure what happened but I assume administration told him to calm down and everything went South. I think he had to be himself and he was told to soften up. And I’m only talking about coaching football, not his off the field troubles which eventually did him in.

Butch’s biggest downfall was trying to micromanage the whole team.

Dude refused to step away from his “philosophy” while he could have easily hired great coaches around him and let them do their jobs.

His inability to adapt and make changes cost him his dream job.

Nobody to blame but himself.
