Why is Butch Jones (still) hated so much?

I think it was because we were told on here how lucky we were to have him and how this was his dream job, which turned into a nightmare for the program is the reason.

As was mentioned he squandered an unbelievable amount of talent.

When things went wrong during games he never took accountability, or acted like it never happened. Obvious things too, like clock management.

He lied to players about how they were going to be used (the most obvious example being Jalen Hurd) and he mismanaged Kamara, not giving him nearly enough touches.

He also apparently thought it was a good idea to not hire a QB coach while Dobbs was here. Our entire offense was built around Dobbs running around and improvising in the moment.

And finally, the life champions thing was just the icing on the cake to all of his corny sayings. The cigar smoking at Bama was the nail in the coffin. I remember Dooley more fondly than him, at least he could be funny at times.

Because he's a bammer cigar smoking douche bag, who squander more talent than any coach in Vol history and rode the back of Dosh Dobbs who without would have crashed and burned much sooner than he did.

Because he was an incompetent coach who didn't know how to utilize the players he had. Scheme sucked, player development sucked, game and player management sucked.

If you dared question anything he did or said you were labeled a Nega-Vol.

I don't hate the guy. I have zero use for him as a coach and view him about the same as I do the other two failures. My problem with him was that for all the recruiting accolades heaped on him, look at the number of transfers during his tenure. Remember this was before the portal was really a thing and it was obvious there was something rotten going on in the program. It was later when we started hearing the reports about how he treated his players. Pruitt, for all his faults, seemed to really love those kids he recruited and was probably too lenient in some cases.

Replying to myself to expand on this. We had over 30+ players transfer out under Jones, and this was all before the transfer portal was a thing nor was it a bunch of kids looking for playing time.

People hate Butch so much because we believed. He recruited well. We made real progress each year from 13-15. In January 16 hopes were probably as high as they had been in a long time. Then we collapsed in ways I couldn’t have imagined possible. Hope turned to hurt. The picture after the Bama game was where he really lost me. I wasn’t mad about him taking a job at Bama. A couple years as Saban’s bitch was the move every fired coach who could get the job did. And I wouldn’t have looked for a real job either when the people who just fired me had to pay me out. Taking that picture with a victory cigar was where I drew the line. Like damn man have some respect for the guys you recruited.

I know some people say that Butch should have never been hired. I can’t really get with that. Considering Kiffin and Dooley were, by their performances as coaches were not qualified to coach at TN. Butch at least earned the right to coach here.

I don’t think it really matters why people hate him. But I sincerely wish him the worst in all things in life as we move forward without him. He lost VFL status and is not welcome around here.

My salute to Lyle is a lifted leg and fart in his general direction. May he whiff l’odeur d’ rotten egg fart until his final breath. Hopefully his maker grants him an overtime so he can whiff that foul stank longer than regulation.

Fans and local media defended him (and our other failed coaches) making the suffering last longer.
He’s a liar.
He can’t accept responsibility for his failures.
