Why is Thompson boling arena.....

I'm guessing you meant to say his chances are 1 in 1000 and you probably really believe 1 in 1000000.
Then there are some of us who are hoping he'll be the best to come from the Keady tree.
He's certainly shown the ability to evaluate talent on the HS level.
He's also shown the ability to develop young players.
He's actively recruiting the best players in the 013 class and should he land one or two, he'll build from the Pearl accomplishments and take the program to the next level.
Now that's JMHO, but the contrast to your completely negative opinion.

Well I appreciate your well thought out reply, I hope you are right in your evaluations. I just don't see it, I think he has the talent right now to be competitive and I don't see the coaching ability that it takes.

OK.

Don't mean to be flip. You've obviously been to more games than I. Sure, an exciting game against a ranked opponent, and it's close, up until the very end, and Loften or McBee nails a three to win a big game. Sure,but...um...what about the rest of the game, the other 38 minutes?

The coaches don't have control of the courtside seats, if they did, they'd like to see some enthusiastic students, literally... behind them. It would make for better TV. jmo, respect yours.

It is just about impossible for an entire gym especially with as many old farts like me who are not in great health to stand and cheer through an entire game. It is pretty rare to see a basketball team play at 100% for the entire game. And they are young and in excellent health. Duke didn't play hard against TN for 40 mins they played down to the competition. This thread is actually pretty silly, it aint about the crowd its about the players..,...

the Tommy Bowl is the problem, it's a multi-use facility first and a basketball arena second.

I never went to a game in the Stokely Center, but I've heard that even when UT's bball program was a joke, the atmosphere was better because the venue was smaller and the fans were a lot closer to the action.

Ever been to Duke? About 9000 people, but its probably worse than Rupp.

I go back to Alumni. Thought both our previous arenas were a better atmosphere and a tougher place for the opposition to play. Still, it's what we have and it could be a good venue if the product on the floor was something people enjoyed watching. I've seen TBA shake and explode over the years. It can and has happened.

These are tough times economically. Dollars are tight. UT sports are "entertainment" and "discretionary". Like it or not, folks need a good reason to spend the time and money. If the teams in Knoxville are going to lay down or go through the motions, that's their character and no amount of yelling from the stands is going to make a difference. If they've got "quit" in them, a fan is not going to yell it out of them. I've been going to Knoxville for games since the 60's. It usually runs me 10 hours on the road and about a grand for a weekend and that doesn't include the costs associated with tickets. I've been doing it so long that it's just habit, and I'll do it until health and/or funds run out. Others might feel differently. They may feel they have better things to do and better ways to spend their money. Doesn't make them "bad fans". Everyone wants to blame the coach...blame the fans...blame the refs....blame the commentators, etc. At the end of the day, these kids are recruited, coached and supported, but THEY are the ones who have to show up and play the games. Yesterday they decided they didn't want to play. Happens....a lot in Knoxville these days.

As for the Martin debate, the thing that I am upset with him is his recruiting. I know his tenure here is young and he had very little time to fill a class when he took the job, but if his recruiting stays on par, he has no chance of surviving at this level of ball

Should feel better about his recruiting...really should feel better now.

I think it just hard for many good Vols fans to see great things coming from Martin.

It has to be understood that this isn't his team, you can't penalize him for what he walked in to, a la Dooley. On the other hand, Dooley came in and immediately showed he can recruit. Martin could use a boost in that category, beating out scrub teams and collecting 0 stars isn't going to get us back up.

It's so early right now in CCM's career, but simply put Vols fans are tired of every single sport besides womens basketball being an absolute embarrassment.

I'm still gonna trust in Martin AND Dooley, until there's full evidence that I can't. Oh and our softball team isn't an embarrassment :)

False. Bruce had fire going for the program 2-3 weeks after his hire. Everyone was on board with him from week 1 into the season and the Texas rout at home solidified it for him. Bruce only need 7 games to get fire and start packing a full house at TBA.

FALSE... Bruce had fire going because of the 6 wins to start off his tenure capped off with a big win over Texas in Austin... followed up with only a couple of loses at home that year (UK and Arky at the end of the season). Add to that road wins over FL and UK... his W's is what ignited a fire that he was trying to build with creative marketing. Of course, he did market the program heavily... only because he had to. Without the W's the marketing fails.

The Texas win at home was his second season and was in no way a "rout" but an overtime win with a clutch shot by Lofton over Durant... many Vol fans remember it well.

Someone posted on a different board how a UConn employee said TBA was louder or as loud as any Big East arena.

i wasnt there so i cant speak first hand, but from friends that went and people i have heard from this was one of the best atmospheres in the last few years.
