Josh Dobbs is a smart kid, has a good arm, and can run well. His and JW performance in 2013 is no indication of how good he could be in 2014. Here are reasons:

1. Subpar receivers playing against SEC DB's. The fact that Josh Malone and LP came in such a dominant fashion is evidence.

2. New offensive system in 2013. Not only for the qbs, but for the entire team. Qb play is about timing- something we will have this year.

I still have concern with Worely- that he can't make SEC throws. But still he may throw with more confidence now that timing is better.

You could have thrown any freshman qb from ainge to bray to clausen in as a starter past year against bama and their 2014 numbers would have been no better.

Go Vols. 7 wins. Let's do it

Agree with your assessment HeyHey. I think QB play will be one of the most visible areas of improvement for all the reasons you listed.

The only caveat to all of this is id the new Oline struggles and plays like swiss cheese and the QBs are running for their lives on a regular basis.

If Worley can play like last year, or improve a little then everything will be in place for 7-8 wins. We have enough talent everywhere else to accomplish that this year.

Barring injury, Dobbs probably only plays mop up. Kudos to him if he gets anything more.

I still believe QB play generally last year was "better" than the play around them. The WR's were just not good. Jones' system requires WR's to be precise and intelligent route runners. They have to make good reads then run the right route and run it correctly. If you are QB in that kind of system with WR's that are doing that less than 80% of the time... then you just can't have the confidence you need to make the throws.

IMO, this is why you saw Dobbs have turnovers and saw Worley throwing passes that sometimes looked inaccurate because he was throwing away from trouble. Sometimes the QB's looked inaccurate because the WR wasn't where they were supposed to be. Jones suggested that Pig's incorrect route running caused a goal line pick on Worley.

There were obviously bad passes because of nothing more than the QB throwing inaccurately. But I believe that was far less than most here think.

Worley can make throws fine when he is confident, steps into it and let's it go. If he hesitates, it's trouble and he can't throw off his back foot as a Bray type arm can but he shouldn't do anything but dump when throwing off his back foot anyway.
Dobbs wasn't even an EE and shouldn't have seen the field as 95% of freshman fall register qbs shouldn't. Much less with nobody around that can help lead due to the newness of it all.

If UT finds a LT then I agree. If Worley is playing as well as he was when he got injured then I think the improvements in the WR corps will make him a top 5 passer in the SEC. The talent additions and development will open things up for everyone.

Spring practice came and went with no QB taking the lead. I think we have average QB at best.

The exception was North, for Worely it's now or never in his fourth year.

How can you say that when we will be less talented than 7 of the 12 teams we play?

Damnit reality gets in the way every time. CBJ and coach Jake will probably name the starter in mid August. :dunno:

More talented or as talented as the following teams

Utah st.
Chatt
Ark st
Vandy
UK
Mizzou
Ole miss

Enough talent to beat the following teams IF we play great

USC
UGA
OU
UF

UF is a near lock as a win I might add, we will pins them at Neyland.

Less talented or less experienced & for those on the D who remain from the previous regime, less motivated & under coached.

That is NOT their situation now. I believe THEY believe.
Confidence is a great equalizer.

I honestly think the key to this year is if the O-line plays well, that is the key to this year. I know we love to speak about WR, QB, and RB positions.... but if the line does not do well I do not care who is throwing the ball, they would not stand a chance. Will our line be bales of straw or a "Brick" wall..... this is the key.

My thoughts on Worley... oh my, I am not sure. Everyone here makes valid points for each. I would think by now (senior) Worley would have been the starter without even thinking about the issue.. but obviously he lacks athletic ability, but he does prevail with the experience. I will support whoever takes the snaps.

Go Vols

Nathan Peterman. I always like to bring up the forgotten one.

I still believe he is much better than he's given credit for.
Everyone points to the disaster in Florida and says he can't play? There were a lot of things that went wrong in Florida including his play....main problem his hurt hand that he didn't want anyone to know about, didn't want to come out of the game? Bad decision.:loco:

While I agree that he is much better than he gets credit for, I think his hand injury had very little to do with his poor performance. He was scared to death and thats understandable.

In this system with a completely new offensive line, the most mobile QB who can manage the offense and keep the mistakes to a minimum will be the guy.

Considering the 1st two games are against Utah St. and Ark. St., this shouldn't be a deciding factor in the outcome. Although, once Tennessee goes on the road against Oklahoma and then comes back to Knoxville to begin conference play, the opposing defenses will more than likely continue to overload the OL of UT and forcing the QB out of his comfort zone until proven that is no longer effective.

Having a QB with minimal mobility in this type offense with the situation along the OL will not have good results come conference play.
