Why slow it down????

so in conclusion bruin has taught us....score more than 70, don't be afraid to play a pace that allows games to go over the 130pt total because it increases our offensive efficiency more than our defense is hurt, and we win at rate that will save half seasons job at the end of the year.

Your welcome :hi:

I couldn't have said it better

63 possessions against Upstate, 74 points, guess the tempo was pushed.

Teamrankings says 65.3.
4th in the nation in effective poss. ratio at 1.091
1.138 for this game.
Not to shabby but only 2 games of course.

A little trivia I found during an insomnia attack:

66: The national average of possessions per game is 65.9 last season. In 1990-91, it was 75.3. Offenses didn't get worse. They got slower.

63: Florida might look like it plays fast. But it plays efficiently. Try just 62.8 possessions per game.

61: Virginia is less deceptive in pace: Tony Bennett's team averaged 61.0 possessions per game last season, a consistent trademark of his methodical system.

Certainly not going back into this argument but after watching last nights game(thinking about this thread), I am convinced now that possessions per game is the most leading stat in hoops.

The biggest reason is offensive rebounds. We had 18 last night that clearly kept the possesions per game lower. We also only had 5TOs which is a factor

Sparta said last week it was a bogus stat and I am very inclined to agree with him after watching a game with that stat in mind.

The only accurate way to measure pace is to calculate when teams take their 1st shot of a possesion in relation to the shot clock.

This stat isn't out there so we will never really know.

For teams that have games where they dominate the offensive boards, like tennessee, the possessions per game average is going to skewed

That is all true :hi:

I suppose the most unbiased way to come up with a better idea would be find the average number of offensive rebounds in the country. Then what we do over that add to our possession number, so say the average is 10, you'd add 8 possessions to our number last night.

Perhaps that is what team rankings does??

It wouldn't be that much though. 1off rebound wouldnt equate to a full possesion becAuse time wise that next shot is much quicker on average.

Perhaps team rankings uses a formula?

Who knows, but my brain is still toasted from the previous debate lol.

I damn sure am not going to look into their numbers at lease for a few days!!

But it would make some sense that an offensive rebound is worth a fraction of a possession. What fraction I have not idea! 1/4 is my guess

Would inflate our number too much. Stokes misses too many layups and gets his own rebound.

Good gracious man let it go. Do I really have to explain why your possession/pace idea is flawed 100 ways again, or I could assume a couple of you that know it all refuse to listen to anybody so its worthless.
Fact is that game was won in large part due to a 15-2 run over a 5 minute period and it was when we played some erratic yet aggressive basketball and atttacked. It flipped the scoreboard and they never recovered. I wouldn't mind knowing the number of shots and possessions during that span. We average @ 8 possessions for each 5 minute span yesterday. I'm going to guess that number was up during that run.

It was sarcasm bro, lighten up.

I watched Purdue basketball games under coach Gene Keady. His teams always played slow down grind it out basketball.

… many are concerned that Martin’s coaching philosophy — based on the principles taught by his old college coach, Gene Keady — will be a turn-ff to UT’s fan base. The spike in attendance, not to mention the refurbishing of the arena, came when (Bruce) Pearl was entertaining fans by reeling off victories with a pressing defense and an offensive high-wire act. The formula for calculating possessions.
Most services use:
FGA-OR+TO+(.44*FTA)

Teamrankings uses:
FGA-OR+TO+(.475*FTA)
