Why we should be optimistic....

The 10 win scenario:

Aug 31 Austin Peay in Knox = WIN
Sep 7 Western KY in Knox = WIN
Sep 14 @ Oregon = LOSS
Sep 21 @ Florida = LOSS
Sep 28 South AL in Knox = WIN
Oct 5 Georgia in Knox = WIN
Oct 19 So Carolina in Knox = WIN
Oct 26 @ Alabama = LOSS
Nov 2 @ Missouri = WIN
Nov 9 Auburn in Knox = WIN
Nov 23 @ Kentucky = WIN
Nov 30 Vandy in Knox = WIN

+ a Bowl WIN.

The two BIG "IF'S" here are USC and UGA.

Unrealistic expectations will be CBJ fired prematurely. I would love 10 wins, but I will believe it when I see it. With all the great things the OP listed, one of the biggest shortcomings is the lack of quality depth. We can't compete week in and week out in this league with out it. Even if we have a great recruiting class, it will be 2 to 3 years before most will contribute significantly. If we keep getting the 3 stars we need the classes to turn out to be seniors or 5th year seniors and we need a lot of them.

With that said, keep your hopes up. Optimism and swagger beat pessimism and defeatism every time.

If Vandy can win 9 games, then we are not too far away. They were in worse shape and they are Vandy. If they can do it in two years then we can too.

Dooley being gone is reason enough.. Butch was a underwhelming hire.. He may turn out to be decent, most thought we could have done better.. I'll include myself in the thought we could have done better.. If he doesn't get the right talent he won't be here long anyway.. I think Tennessee has officially become a revolving door of coaches.. Every 3 or 4 years we're probably going to be pushing the reset button... Maybe sooner if a half empty stadium becomes the normal... The next time we'll be getting rid of the AD also..

i think where i have a disagreement with most of the board is that most don't think there is a significant gap between tennessee and georgia/south carolina.

i think there is.

now, before people go mentioning the scores of games in recent years.....

1. i am looking at the total body of work, not just how the two teams played that day.

2. the exceptional personnel tennessee had are gone

Btw, forgot to mention that we have more talent than Vanderbilt. If they can do it, then I know we can. Coaching hire means a lot.

We'll be lucky to win 6 games next year...

i wouldn't go that far, but it's hard to know where tennessee will try to hang their hat this season.

i can't see them being a run the ball, field position, defensive team.

and it's hard to imagine tennessee scaring defenses through the air with everything they lost.

No way we will be lucky. We should win 7 minimum. Vandy, Kentucky, Mizzou are must wins. With a new approach and outlook with Coach Jones, our schedule has a lot of promising games. Don't forget that we got rid of Dooley and therefore don't leave out the importance ad influence a head coach can have on a team. We are not a joke with Coach Jones. If you need proof, see Canderbilt and Franklin's influence.

Well, well, well. Look who's returned from the dead.

Welcome back, Ghost. :good!:

School has been killing me, so I have a hard time getting on here to post. Such is life with classes like media ethics and web design for media. Hopefully I'll find more time to get on here and post.

I see no reason that we can't win 7-8 games...possibly 9 with an upset...everyone needs to get out of the mindset that we will never beat a ranked team again.....we dont have a coach that finds a new way to lose every week anymore

Those are more than "BIG" if's; those are MASSIVE. While I don't want to say that those are impossible wins, they are all but impossible. The idea that we will be ready to match up in those games is a huge stretch.

You aren't necessarily wrong when you talk about major media outlets. I have no plans to work for major news media. I'd love to start my own production company, and that's what I'm working towards.

i don't think people carry that mindset about the program.

that's the mindset right now.

the question everyone will have answered is....was it just the coaching or are upgrades also needed on the roster?

i, and i believe most of the board, believes it was more than just coaching....which means turning this thing around will take time

it would be interesting to see a classroom discussion of the te'o story and the sandy hook story to hear why it is that so much that is factually inaccurate is reported

I'm inclined to agree with you. I think we are decent at defensive tackle, the offensive line, and running back. Beyond that, I think there are a lot of possibilities to upgrade the roster. I'm hopeful for a strong close to this class, adding a few immediate impact players.

I can answer that. It's a product of the 24 hour news cycle. When Ted Turner created CNN, he regrettably created an unsustainable system. Just like any network, there is a requirement for ratings to be high to sustain the network through advertising. This created "info-tainment", a system in which facts are de-emphasized and certain stories are outright ignored. Only sensational information is deemed worthy of reporting, and opinion is now presented as fact. Ideally, the system will kill itself, but until it does outlets like "The Daily Show", "The Colbert Report", and other mock media will be as accurate in their reporting as the major media outlets.
