Why we should be optimistic....

i don't think people carry that mindset about the program.

that's the mindset right now.

the question everyone will have answered is....was it just the coaching or are upgrades also needed on the roster?

i, and i believe most of the board, believes it was more than just coaching....which means turning this thing around will take time

Vandy says you are wrong. Vandy won 9 games this year with pretty much the same roster. We have had good recruiting classes the last 4 years. We do need some upgrades on the roster like in our defensive backfield but we have adequate talent to compete.

This. Take a look at our schedule this year. If we get 7, and a bowl win, I'll be very happy with 8 - 5. It will show true progress, and then Butch needs to build on it each year.

If Butch wins 6 games he should be coach of the year.

I tend to agree. I am hoping for a positive rebound due to finally having a coaching staff that has been together in their past and know what is expected. Whether they are top tier or not is still to be determined. 7 wins + a bowl would be great with this roster.

I believe almost all of it was either coaching or had to do with the way the coach acted toward the players.....do I think we will be perfect?....no but I don't think we are as bad off as everyone makes it seem.....I see a lot of talent on both sides of the ball and a coach that can set a winning attitude and motivate the team...the only position I'm worried about is QB....I think the D will be fine going back to a scheme they know and we have 2 RBs that can get the job done and a pretty good set of receivers...we could use some depth though

vandy won 9 games without beating anyone who is ranked. still a great accomplishment because it's vandy.

in 2013, florida, georgia, alabama, oregon and south carolina will likely end the season ranked. so, if tennessee doesn't beat a ranked opponent, they are already at 5 losses.

i will just use florida as an example. it's one facet of the team and not the entire team, but the point will still be made.

the florida offense has had 3 offensive coordinators in 3 years. statistically speaking, each have been awful (i think 2012 was a bit better than what statistics would show, but regardless).

more than likely, all of the coordinators and other offensive assistants could not have all been awful. so despite coaching changes, it's become obvious that personnel on that side of the ball is and has been a problem. but, steve addazio was an idiot, charlie weis is an idiot and now there are people that doubt brent pease. and people learned that xavier nixon couldn't pass block while any of them were here and the wr corps didn't magically get better, etc, etc, etc

urban meyer is a great coach, but it took 3 years for his offense to truly get rolling at florida.

coaching is half the battle, but people usually find that a previous group of coaches weren't as dumb as you thought and that talent upgrades are needed

Didn't say that we would win 9. I provided an example that you can beat teams with the same talent. Candy would not have beaten those teams the previous year, but they did with a new leader in Franklin. That was my point, we have similar talent, better attitude, and we have our leader. I realize that they beat nobody but they did not beat those nobodies two years ago. So, I am right when I said that with new leadership we can win 7 games minimum. I also said that our talent is better than Candy's so we should have enough to compete with our better schedule. Btw, 7 wins means that you win the games you should and 8 means you upset 1 team.

Dooley being gone is reason enough.. Butch was a underwhelming hire.. He may turn out to be decent, most thought we could have done better.. I'll include myself in the thought we could have done better.. If he doesn't get the right talent he won't be here long anyway.. I think Tennessee has officially become a revolving door of coaches.. Every 3 or 4 years we're probably going to be pushing the reset button... Maybe sooner if a half empty stadium becomes the normal... The next time we'll be getting rid of the AD also..

There's a ring of truth here ya'll. Don't get me wrong, CBJ has my support and hope he does great. But the truth is he was an underwhelming hire, a guy at Louisville turned us down in a public way along with others where our AD was basically jetting around with hat in hand. I'd hate to see Neyland half empty but if CBJ doesn't produce success on the field early, it could get ugly early.

I swear we never learn here on volnation. We will not win ten games. I respect the positivity and optimism but a few well written articles doesn't all the sudden make us an sec contender and improve our abysmal defense from last yr. We are losing are top 4 weapons (bray cp hunter Rivera). Our d-line got thinner with the loss of sentimore. We have a whole new coaching staff and defensive scheme. No matter if these kids play better under the 4-3, it will require yet another adjustment. And oh don't forget who we play this year not just in conference but out. I want us to win ten games as much as the next but let's be realistic. Even Gruden with a top five class wouldn't have won us ten IMO. (What would a post be without a Gruden mention)

The voice of reason belongs to you, sir.

I just want a couple of major upsets - I dont care if its Alabama, Oregon, UF, Georgia -- just 2 big ones to shoot the publicity up.

7 wins ceiling 4 wins minimum. 6 with a bowl game is the sweet spot.

Those are more than "BIG" if's; those are MASSIVE. While I don't want to say that those are impossible wins, they are all but impossible. The idea that we will be ready to match up in those games is a huge stretch.

Totally agree, I'm leaning toward the idea that those two big "IF's" will be "L's", but we still have an outside chance at 8 "W's".

Come on we are only returning 4 linemen and a rb on O . Every other position has to have a new starter . 2 wideouts a slot and a tightend plus a qb to throw to all this new players . This spells growing pains early .

Because we were so productive last year with all those "great" players.

It is sad that georgia would be considered a major upset, but this program hasn't had an SEC win of any consequence in years now. It looked like we were headed toward a victory over florida this past year, but ran out of gas in the second half, again. It was really nice finally being back in the top 25. Then later on in the season, I was really looking forward to knocking miss state off when we played them while they were highly ranked. I thought UT would turn the corner with that victory, but it wasn't to be. We were close in the georgia game, too. We had georgia reeling and had the momentum, but too many turnovers in the fourth quarter let the dawgs off the hook. UT was able to play with these teams even during 2012. I think bUTch and his boys will get us over the top and headed in the right direction.

I see so much negativity on here,it is sickening. Why? We have gotten rid of the most asinine coach in UT history. We have hired a proven winner that is passionate about Tennessee. We return virtually our entire team except Bray,CP,and Hunter. We have a coach that knows how to utilize the talent we have. We have a LOT of talent. We are going to have more after NSD. Do yall not remember the turnarounds when we hired Cutcliffe back after 05 and when we hired Kiffin in 09? COACHES MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD! I honestly believe we`ll win 10 games next season. We will have the best offensive line in the nation. We have 2 RBs that will have progressed tremendously under Graham`s tutelage. We have a load of talent at the WR position, although it lacks experience. We have 3 QBs who will compete for the starting job. I believe Worley and Peterman will turn out to be great QBs. We are switching back to the 4-3 and our D personnel will greatly benefit from this. We are going to have an awesome D and running game for sure. That`s what wins championships. We have an outstanding, brilliant, and extremely hard-working coach now. We are on the rise. We will surprise the entire nation this fall. I say we`ll go 10-3. I`m very optimistic. Will yall tell me why yall are optimistic or a negateer? GO VOLS!

WebbVol, I like you and usually agree with most of what you post, but I can't agree with saying we just got rid of the most asinine coach ...

The man just didn't get the results we needed, but he was a good guy who gave it his all. I would say the one just before him was more asinine if that had to be pinned on somebody -- which it really doesn't. :shades:
