In 2016 we will have as much talent as anyone if the current pace continues with recruiting. If he can get us to 7 or 8 wins this year, which is not far fetched by any means, 9 is even within grasp, then recruiting can continue to get even better. Also you have to think that some other SEC schools will enter into their down cycle as we are climbing out of ours ready to dominate the known world. Based off of this id like to see 2-3 SEC titles and at least one national championship between 2016 and 2020.

Relax Chief. We all love Butch and the job he's doing. It's a pragmatic thing. Butch could do a phenomenal job, win 90% of his games and never get an opportunity to play for a natty. Look at Fulmer...HOF coach, 152-52 record, had some of the best teams in the country, and won 1 NC in 16 years.... and had some great breaks go his way (like all teams must have) for that to happen. It's a very difficult equation.

For me it's not a lack of faith in Butch over the long term....love the great things he's doing off the field but I need to see more on the field what he can do. If he could somehow squeeze out an 8-9 THIS year with what he has then I think most would say he could also be a special coach on Saturdays....he didn't show that last year IMO.
No need to relax my friend. The players and fans love the excitement Butch has brought back to the hill. It is all about recruiting. If you can get the players, you can win the NC. While I agree a lot of things have to go right for you to win it, if you have the players things go right more often than not. Remember 98, the fumble against AK and the interference call against Syr. both could have stopped us. Fulmer was great coach, but didn't have a thing to do with those plays. It was the players. Butch is getting us the players again. It might not be in 6 years like OP said, but he definitely has a good chance if he keeps up recruiting. That was Fulmer's downfall, he let off the gas in recruiting. Here we come look out everybody, BUTCH GETS IT.

No, not because he does not have the ability, but because UT and fans will not allow enough time to build the type of program that can succeed at that level. After he begins to do well he will move on to other opportunities as the fan base demands immediate championship contention and attendance remains mediocre.

Odds are no. And that's what I would put money on if I had to. But I'm going full homer here and saying yes.

No idea. I think he can be a contender in the SEC east. I think getting to the championship is harder than winning it most years. He's already shown he is an elite recruiter.

That's the goal, and so far almost every move Butch has made has been dead on. I don't think it's impossible that we could win a couple while he's here. I'm not necessarily predicting that. But I'm not ruling it out either.

If that's not a possibility then what the hell are we all doing here?

Attendance remains mediocre? We just had the 2nd biggest crowd in the entire nation for a spring game. What are you talking about?

The new playoff format makes it easier.

I agree. All we have to do is sneak in and be healthy. And hopefully we're playing our best football at the right time. We don't necessarily have to even win the SEC. Which is weird. We no longer need a perfect season. I wish we had a game right now. I'm pumping myself up.

Empty seats on gameday. Although attendance seems to be improving, I wonder what will happen this season as UT has another tough year. A free admission event, while great fun and an annual tradition at my house, does not necessarily equate to butts in seats with a paid ticket.

It's all relative. There are empty seats in practicaly EVERY stadium in college football now. Part of it is how expensive it is to go to a game. Part of it is that stadiums are now competing with home theaters with 60" flat screens. In spite of a 5-7 record I believe we still finished in the top 5 or top 10 in attendance for the 2013 football season.

Haha! Name me another program that gets 80,000-90,000 in attendance after 4 straight losing seasons.

This is also a good time for me to point to my poll here where 76% of the posters here declared a 5-7 season with a home loss to Vanderbilt a job well done. Yeah, such a tough demanding fanbase.

I suppose that's true. But when games are big, Neyland is going to be packed. Excitement is so high right now. I think most fans realize that we are still a year away from really being where we need to be talent-wise. We may not win 9 games this year, but this team is going to be fun to watch.

I voted no. Love Butch and literally everything he's done with the program outside of Gameday. I think he's gonna turn the program around, make UT relevant and challenge for SEC championships with the next 2-3 years. But the odds are against him ever winning a NC. I'd be more than happy with 9-10 win seasons and no blowout losses for now.

Pretty much this. I think we need to focus on being top in the East or just winning. National Championship is a stretch at this point.

UT didn't build those top 3 facilities to " just win", they built them to win championships. Ole miss and Arkansas have goals to just win. Tennessee has all the resources to win big and they will.

The question wasn't referring to "this point". The question was referring to the whole time Butch is here. Nobody is talking about us winning it all this year. Except for that 0stargeneral dude. More power to him I guess.

We're building something big. I don't know if we're going to win a championship or not. But we're going to be standing there with a chance to at some point while he's here.

I voted no but only because of the odds of ANY coach winning a National Championship. There's only a handful that ever do it.

We should revisit this thread about a month into this season. The reactions at that time will be very interesting.

This thread raised a question for me, so I looked it up:

How many coaches have won national championships after suffering a losing record at that school? And how long does it typically take?

Several legendary coaches have pulled it off: Lou Holtz, Bobby Bowden, Don James, Bobby Ross, Bill McCartney, LaVell Edwards. And that's just within the past 30 years.

It took these guys an average of 11 years starting with their first losing season until they won the NC, though Holtz was able to go from 5-6 to 12-0 in just three.

So, Jones winning a national title is certainly a possibility. But history suggests that patience will be required.

The question was about our coach not our facilities.

I know what the question was. I answered it. No. Not ever while Butch is here. By "this point" I meant Jones' tenure. I think we can get some winning records and get some East titles at the most. National Championship? Unlikely. But I would love to be proven wrong.

Yes or No?

I say Yes he will, and he should within 6 years.

I started this due to that fact some on this board think butch will not and may only get us an sec title if we are lucky.

Who knows?...Will jesus rise from the grave as a zombie and start eating people on sunday?

I hope he does within the next 2 years. If he don't I guess there will be a petition to bring Derek Dooley back. SMH. Like I've said, and have had the hell blasted out of me, CPF love him or not set the bar. The taste of the 1998 season is still fresh in many peoples mouth. Why don't we just win the East first, then maybe the SEC before we worry about NC's. Although, getting within 2 points of the Elite 8 in a coaches 3rd year wasn't good enough, I doubt lousy ole SEC titles will be good enough either.

GO BIG ORANGE!!
