This thread raised a question for me, so I looked it up:
How many coaches have won national championships after suffering a losing record at that school? And how long does it typically take?
Several legendary coaches have pulled it off: Lou Holtz, Bobby Bowden, Don James, Bobby Ross, Bill McCartney, LaVell Edwards. And that's just within the past 30 years.
It took these guys an average of 11 years starting with their first losing season until they won the NC, though Holtz was able to go from 5-6 to 12-0 in just three.
So, Jones winning a national title is certainly a possibility. But history suggests that patience will be required.
Good post.
It's so difficult to win it all now-a-days, but I think he'll lead UT to a couple 10 or (maybe) 11 win seasons.
Attendance remains mediocre? We just had the 2nd biggest crowd in the entire nation for a spring game. What are you talking about?
I voted no. Love Butch and literally everything he's done with the program outside of Gameday. I think he's gonna turn the program around, make UT relevant and challenge for SEC championships with the next 2-3 years. But the odds are against him ever winning a NC. I'd be more than happy with 9-10 win seasons and no blowout losses for now.
There's nothing wrong with being optimistic. People feed off of and get motivated by optimism. Butch Jones has done more in one season than Dooley ever dreamed of doing. All the Negative Nancies in here need to stand behind your team and your coach or turn your fan card in. You're cutting the guy's legs out from underneath him before he ever gets the program completely turned around. It pisses me off. If we don't have a 10 win season this year I fully expect a 30,000 signature petition asking Butch to leave.
There's been an "alive" or "electric" feeling in the air since Butch got here and I as well as everyone I know have been more excited about Vol football than we have been in years. I too would like to see an SEC title more than anything, but I don't think that a National Championship is completely out of the question if he continues to recruit like he is and the wins keep building.
I said "No" only because the odds are against him, not because I don't think he's a good coach.
