A list of 2 words we need to grasp before we throw around National Championship:

1) Winning Season
2) SEC Champions
3) All-SEC Talent (hyphens count :))

This thread raised a question for me, so I looked it up:

How many coaches have won national championships after suffering a losing record at that school? And how long does it typically take?

Several legendary coaches have pulled it off: Lou Holtz, Bobby Bowden, Don James, Bobby Ross, Bill McCartney, LaVell Edwards. And that's just within the past 30 years.

It took these guys an average of 11 years starting with their first losing season until they won the NC, though Holtz was able to go from 5-6 to 12-0 in just three.

So, Jones winning a national title is certainly a possibility. But history suggests that patience will be required.

Good post.

It's so difficult to win it all now-a-days, but I think he'll lead UT to a couple 10 or (maybe) 11 win seasons.

Agree with you Pick. I don't care about NCs. Give me like it was in the 90s.... favored in just about every game, owned Bama, actually beat Fla, fans expected to win every game and it felt like we just about did. Ton of NFL talent everywhere, won SEC championships. Give me that again and I won't care if we never play for a natl championship.

An NC would be icing but for now I just want every team to fear. Really fear playing Tennessee. We've had a few Utah fans over here saying that they will give us a run and may possibly beat us. At this point, I won't disagree with them. But it sucks that they maintain that attitude simply because we have sucked for so long. CBJ may bring us back to being relative, but I want that relation to be "Crap, we have Tennessee on our schedule!" "That will be brutal." Relevance my good friends, relavance.

Attendance remains mediocre? We just had the 2nd biggest crowd in the entire nation for a spring game. What are you talking about?

that attendance figure is not what is important. There is no doubt we have fans that are passionate about the football program

the problem is financial and just fans buying tickets and showing up at games does not help the program grow.

5 years ago, there was over 12,000 donors buying season tickets. this year that number is down to 10,300 donors buying season tickets. Donors are the life blood of athletic programs and Tennessee's has been trending the wrong way for the last 5 years.

Possible, but not likely to happen. Gotta beat the Commodores, and Gators when they royally suck. If he can keep recruiting classes like last year then he can. That is the question. Can he bring in top tier classes annually?

This is much tougher than a conference title. Butch may win multiple SEC champ and be considered the guy that brought Tennessee back to the top but never win a national title. Very hard thing to do and not something I would expect a coach to do in his first six years.

I voted no. Love Butch and literally everything he's done with the program outside of Gameday. I think he's gonna turn the program around, make UT relevant and challenge for SEC championships with the next 2-3 years. But the odds are against him ever winning a NC. I'd be more than happy with 9-10 win seasons and no blowout losses for now.

I said yes, because he is bringing in the recruits that have the potential to run his system and bring it home, Agree with the "for now" part though. Still waiting for the individuals yet to arrive to get here. If they are working their butts off, the odds that are against us swing more in our favor.

Why are so many people freaking out about asking if Butch can win a NC here? It's not like he asked if he'd do it next year or even in the next 5 years. If people don't think Butch can win a NC EVER while here, then we've got the wrong guy. I'm pretty sure most, if not all, vol fans want a guy at the helm that will lead us to a NC eventually. To me this question reads "is Butch the right guy to get us back?"

There's nothing wrong with being optimistic. People feed off of and get motivated by optimism. Butch Jones has done more in one season than Dooley ever dreamed of doing. All the Negative Nancies in here need to stand behind your team and your coach or turn your fan card in. You're cutting the guy's legs out from underneath him before he ever gets the program completely turned around. It pisses me off. If we don't have a 10 win season this year I fully expect a 30,000 signature petition asking Butch to leave.

There's been an "alive" or "electric" feeling in the air since Butch got here and I as well as everyone I know have been more excited about Vol football than we have been in years. I too would like to see an SEC title more than anything, but I don't think that a National Championship is completely out of the question if he continues to recruit like he is and the wins keep building.

I said "No" only because the odds are against him, not because I don't think he's a good coach.

Agree. I think we have one hell of a coach and ambassador for our program. However, even in '98 when we had a great team we still needed some luck to pull us through that season. Sometimes it just isn't in the cards.

I like this thread. It may be a little crazy, but it isn't "will we win a national title tomorrow?" crazy.

Crazy is what we do!

Heart says "yes!", head says "doubtful". It takes a near perfect set of circumstances to pull off an NC. Maybe the playoff system will change that and maybe in dramatic fashion. I am really not sure what to expect there.

By the way, why are people pulling the "negative nancy" crap on the doubters? Thinking with your heart vs head can give different viewpoints. I swear for some of you it must be being in "Da Bears!" skits every day.
