I feel a bunch of different ways about this. This isn't a comedy club or a roast and it's not the time or place to make fun of JPS's alopecia. It's both a good and bad look for WS, depending on your school of thought. Rock took that **** like a G and acted like a professional.
It looks like Will Smith was going to laugh it off until he saw that Jada didn't like it. Like you said, if Chris Rock was out of line, then you deal with it after the show. Will Smith is 53 years old. He should be better equipped to maintain his composure than that. The joke may have been in bad taste but Smith should have taken it up back stage. He was laughing 2 seconds before. It was completely out of character for him.

Now... THIS is the only thing anyone will ever remember about tonight. Will Smith winning an Oscar for Best Actor, will be forgotten.
What are you talking about? In terms of the law? Someone making an insensitive and tasteless joke about someone's wife does not give the husband in question the right to respond with an act of violence (and yes, an open hand slap across the face qualifies as violence).Probably out of your perception of his character. I'm not saying he did the right thing but I'm not sure it's wrong either.

There is no doubt Chris Rock is embarrassed by this whole thing right now, and he will not want to make such an issue of it, but he could. In the coming days, the two of them will make up... and probably even film a commercial together. The marketing possibilities are substantial. However, there should be no doubt as to who who was in the wrong here. It's the guy who made the confrontation physical.
At a time of anger, a mature adult will (usually) maintain their composure, and not resort to violence as a means of conflict resolution, when there are clearly other options available to them. That is wise, at least in part, because there can be serious legal consequences for impulsive acts of violence committed against another person.Mature adults allow the law to define right and wrong for them?

... but it was wrong. Part of being an adult is learning to control your anger, and using violence only as a last resort. Clearly, Will Smith has a low boiling point which he should address. Will Smith went from laughing at Chris Rock's joke to slapping him across the face in about 15 seconds. That's fast.I said "I'm not sure it's wrong" which is totally reasonable and you're ranting at me paragraphs about the law and maturity. Take a break
