Will Smith slaps Chris Rock

If George Washington slapped a man for insulting his bald wife, it'd be a part of his legend.

Realize that your judgment of this situation is based on all your experiences and biases.

C’mon man. George Washington lived in a time when gun duels were still an acceptable from of resolution.

Let’s not forget his wife was having an affair not to long ago and Will Smith didn’t react this way. But suddenly a bald joke is out of line? He was even laughing initially.

Yeah, that's a good point here. That rapper in his 20's (August Alsina? Something like that?) was publicly bragging about boinking her... but THIS gets Will Smith triggered? The whole thing seems weird. It was too clumsy and uncomfortable to have been planned, but I think Will was trying to send a message to somebody and used a little guy who won't defend himself like Rock to do it.

On a side note, I love the recent changes to the Oscars process. CODA wouldn't have been nominated 10 years ago and now it's rightfully best picture.
It ran in theaters for a short stint to become eligible for nomination. It wouldn't have been nominated otherwise.

This is the most interesting thing to come out of the Oscars in my 42 years on this planet.

Still don't plan on ever watching one though.
It's not really all that "interesting", just unfortunate. I haven't watched the Oscars in forever and I didn't watch last night, as I felt like it had gotten worse and worse over the years. This certainly doesn't make me want to tune in. I see it more as the oscars hitting rock bottom.

He could have just yelled "She has a sickness, dick joke buddy." And it would have been 10x more effective.
Or, simply handled it calmly, like a man. Waiting till after the lights and cameras were off. Walked up to CR and said 'Funny stuff, but...hey man, ive cracked jokes about Alopecia before but, as you might imagine my family and I are going through some stuff & that one felt below the belt.'

'Dont make Wayne Brady choke a bitch.'

Knowing Chris Rock, it's game on now. Open season. Smith did himself no favors. Wth do I know?

Seems staged, Will was laughing then decided to go on stage. No one watches the Oscar and this has everyone talking about it.

Here is a video of it live and uncensored (Language warning). You can see Will clearly thinks the joke is funny then gets up 5 seconds later to slap him. You can see after the slap when he's walking back he still has a little smirk on his face. I'm not sure this wasn't scripted. Or maybe not scripted but Will did it to gain attention, knowing Chris wouldn't do anything back to him.

OK, I'll be "that guy."

This is staged, without any doubt, and I can't believe the number of people who are falling for it. Oscars ratings have been terrible and declining for years (obvious motive) and the people involved in this are, you know, actors.

I don’t think it was staged. I think Jada is weird and has Will whipped. She’s messed with his mind and warped their kids. His son from his previous relationship is completely normal. His other 2 kids belong in an institution.

That was as classless as it gets. I don't watch the Oscars but my wife summoned me from other room. I was shocked while we made sure it was real. Then the guy does the sympathy crying later.

Kudos for Chris Rock for staying professional.

If anyone would like further discussion about why I feel this way then I can give more detail.

So right and wrong in this case are relative? That's kinda my point.

Maybe WS did react this way with the other stuff. Did it happen at the Oscars and he just sat there?

It wouldn't have been nominated if there were only 5 nominees still and it likely wouldn't have got the most votes if they didn't expand the voting base.

I'm just blown away that Will Smith attacked Chris Rock on stage in front of millions, and there was absolutely NO recourse. He was simply allowed to sit back down for the remainder of the show, and then go back up on stage and collect his award later. Why wasn't he escorted from the venue? I wouldn't have stripped him from his Oscar. He won it fair and square and this incident shouldn't change that. However I definitely would've robbed him of his public moment of acceptance. I would've had him removed from the venue and Fed Ex'd his damn trophy to him.

Maybe? I mean, wouldn't all the "buzz" have been after the fact though? Not sure how that would help ratings unless you're thinking is it is supposed to give a bump next year. Given the attention span of people these days I'm not sure that's going to do much but I don't watch any of that stuff so I don't know.

I'm sure it helped ratings for the rest of the show, and it gives people something to talk about in connection with the Oscars for a while. Next year, the year after that, the year after that, etc., it'll get mentioned.

Remember when Kanye went up and interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at whatever awards show that was? People still talk about that. It became a meme, raised awareness of the show, etc.

His 2 kids with Jada seem really nice and there is nothing wrong with being weird, IMO. Growing up with a Dad who is a billionaire and one of the most famous people on earth might make you a bit different.
