Will Tennessee ever return to national contender status?

If we can shoot the ball at 40 percent from the three and make 12 in any game we certainly have a chance to win that game. As far as post play that is the big problem. If we had that we'd be so much better.
I trust that post play is coming along , just fine. šŸ˜Š

She played a lot on the perimeter last game. I think that is the plan cause she can get in the lane and score or take it to the basket. Wynn has that talent as well she just doesn't have the shooting ability. Make no mistake about our team where were hurting the most is in the post Karo is doing what she can as a smaller player we need Tamari and Jill to play a lot of good minutes.

I'm all for getting the ball in Rickea hands more, Wynn needs to just get a pull up game, if she can beat her defender and pull up, that would be great, the problem is her going for a layup with traffic. Jill doesnā€™t really want to bang in the paint, she wants to be on the perimeter. Whatā€™s missing is Spear giving us what I know sheā€™s capable of, just be aggressive and demand the ball. i see us going 4 or 5 possesssions without passing her the ball, and that should never happen.

Bingo a winner!!! The LVs 3-pt. shooting has been lost in all the debate over whether Liberty was a legitimate opponent. They shot 40% with 12 made threes. If you look back over the last several seasons, that formula (at least 40% and 10 threes) are games that the LVs win, regardless of opponent rank and conversely, their losses tend to come on those 4-25 nights. And the LVs always get open threes because teams tend to pack the paint against them. But some nights, they are shooting bricks and other nights it is buckets after buckets.

HItting threes spreads out the defense and lets the team get set on defense versus getting caught in transition defense.

For all the talk about coaching and players, more often than not, the game comes down to outside shooting.

I just want to say there is no hate and please forgive me if there has been a similar thread posted. This is just a conversation, but I am concerned that Tennessee will never be amongst the elites again. I remember there were times I couldn't wait to get in front of the big screen in my house to watch the Lady Vols play, to see the new recruits and what they will bring to the team or will the team make a deep post season run possibly finally getting to the Final Four. These last five or more years have been hard to watch. It's like Tennessee never shows up in the big games or rarely win games that they aren't the favorites. The Sweet 16 has become the new norm. Third place in the conference has been accepted as good. There has been loaded rosters during these times but the play on the court has been just good and not great. My expectations have dropped significantly. I don't watch their games anymore. I only check score tracker when I know they are playing because it has become hard to watch a team play with little passion and sloppy basketball. I understand NIL, but Tennessee's recruiting wasn't great prior to NIL. The coaching, the offensive and defensive schemes makes you just shake your head. As a fan base, do you all think Tennessee will ever be amongst the elites again and considered a national contender?
Not with Holly Jr as coach

right....and then hired Roy Williams--a big-name, experienced coach who'd been with Kansas, a powerhouse program, and won a title there. And UNC's fortunate improved dramatically under Williams, who won two national titles with the Heels. Williams is an alumnus of UNC--so there was a connection--but his coaching chops were Grade A.

In UNCā€™s defense, they offered the job to Roy in 2000 but he turned it down. Doherty was their Plan B in order to ā€œkeep it in the family,ā€ which was what Dean Smith and Michael Jordan wanted. Three years later when Doherty was fired, Roy took the job.

BTW, Roy never won a title at Kansas. He won three at UNC.

Three-point shooting has been /one/ of our problems for a few years--though certainly not the only one. Last year we averaged
5 treys a game--not good enough. This year we're averaging 8, which is good, except that our 3-point shooting percentage is only 31% compared to 36% by our opponents. We will want and need to get that percentage up to 35 percent, at least, if we want to make some noise this year.

ā€¦and defend the damn arc.

Definitely need to flip those percentages

Doherty was like their Plan C or D because other UNC alumni like Larry Brown and George Karl turned down the job but I get your point.
I wonder who would've gotten the Tennessee job if Kellie had turned the job down? Krya? One of the Nikkis?

Yes to this. Not taking sides here Mudcat, just saying FB is the top revenue producer for all UT sports and its not even close, even in the down yrs. They fund all the non-revenue making sports and many others things. Like it or not, the TN brand is made by the success of the FB team.

Pat's success certainly added to the brand name, no debate there, but it is not the premier sport.
I read Danny White on Doubleing the sports budget. Know Tennessee football pays for other sports at University of Tennessee.. Just making a point that Football six National championships to Tennessee ladies Vols basketball eight championships have same history of wining championships. Do not think Tennessee should hold basketball women's to higher than football standards. If Danny White plan for all sports at University of Tennessee . Lady Vols basketball shouldn't have way higher standards than all the others.

They can compete for National Championships but there are huge mountains to climb and raging rivers to cross on the way in getting players and have the coaching to do so.
