True, but they bring absolutely nothing now. They hardly even stand up, or cheer in crunch time.

I think this is part of the problem. It's not how many are in the arena. It's what the ones in the arena do. Or don't do, which is stand up and make noise. Lots of places across the country hold way fewer people. But there crowds seem way better cause they stand a lot,and make alot of noise. It sucks ,but it's always been that way. Sometimes in the middle of games it's like you could hear a pin drop. It feels like the fans aren't there or they are just ho hum about the game. Which I don't think makes us look good to the rest of the country. I guess the crowds are better for nationally televised games so it may not look as bad as it appears to normally for us.

it is just too big as already stated. do we pack in 21k sometimes for UK? yes, but that is 1 game a year. personnaly i would like to see the seating chopped down to around 17k since thats what we are averaging around now anyways. ideally itd be rebuilt and there not be so much mass, i know this sounds dumb but the inside is just massive, these gyms with lower ceiling it just naturally makes it louder. i would do away with the suites because 1/2 of those people dont even watch the game whatsoever. in all honest it is almost more of a nba arena, very vast and containing suites filled with people who dont care about the game.

look at the atmosphere at UF and Vandy, both sit around 12-13k but those places are rocking, becuase you dont pack in to a game like they do unless you are a die hard that is going to make some noise with the rest of them .

I like TBA as-is, it's amongst the best, if not THE best collegiate basketball arenas in the country... if anything, I wish they would renovate the exterior. As it stands, it looks like UT got a good deal from Clayton Homes on some siding. Why couldn't the exterior be redone in brick, similar to Neyland and add more windows onto the concourse, all the way around with river views? That would be amazing. Move food service to central food courts (already in the works, isn't it?) and reconfigure the concourse a bit and bam.

Expensive, I know, but we can dream, right? It would fit in with the style of Pratt Pavilion and the newer architectural styles on campus.

At least they don't have to hang curtains in the upper deck anymore.

I would much rather be able to buy a ticket and see us play, than have outrageous prices at a much smaller gym. Cameron for instance...it's almost impossible to get a ticket to their high school sh!t hole arena.

That is the exact reason that Neyland isn't as intimidating a place to play as the swamp or LSU. It is because the average fan's age skews considerably older. Those people who sit, listening to the game on their headset and get upset while everyone else cheers are one of the biggest problems I have with the UT fan base.

Its a shame when us graduates get no special consideration, but people who never set foot on the school as a student but who have much more money get special preference. It should be the other way around...

Just like there is a student section, there should be a grad section...that place would be nuts!

for atmosphere purposes obviously cameron is elite, but as you said it then becomes almost impossible to get in there to see a game.

TBA should've only been 17-18K, but Dickey and the rest of the buffoons thought we could build a 25,000 seat arena and fill it up. Now when it was built there were no pro sports teams in the state at the time, but I doubt many people that go to Grizzlies, Titans or Preds game would go to UT games during the week anyway.

There was no huge tv package back in the late 80's when TBA was built either. Every game being televised has made more of a difference on the attendance IMO. It's much easier and cheaper to stay at home and watch it on tv than go to the games.

Went to the game tonight, was on the 18th row in one of the midcourt sections. I'm 28, my gf is 21. We both felt horribly out of place where we sat and wished we'd have gotten cheaper seats near the student section. Could have saved money and had a better time. That being said... the game was F'ing fantastic. With the electricity those guys were playing with tonight, the crowd should have been much more amped than they were. Was my first time in TBA for the Cuonzo era.

We had 5 people on our immediate right that were 60+, and 4 on our left. None of them stood or cheered the entire game. The lady sitting to my right was even terribly upset for some reason over the Betty White cutout being used in the student section.

Seriously... It's a shame.

Speaking of TBA, I found this gallery from the News Sentinel that shows TBA under construction, I found it pretty interesting:
Thompson-Boling Arena : Knoxville Photo Galleries : GoVolsXtra.com: University of Tennessee sports news from The Knoxville News Sentinel

Looks like the arena from Gears of War 3.

It’s too big and we still are 5th in the nation. That’s saying something. Our fanbase is as loyal as they come, as well as borderline crazy. Love it though. GBO.

No one may care about this but this is the exterior of the newly renovated Rupp - the exterior shell is going to be translucent according to reports.

I kind of like that UK has a throw-back arena, it's got a smoky kind of old school appeal to me...I'm sure the newly renovated Rupp will be ballin but I’ll always remember what I grew up loving.

I had the same issue, I told my story last night. I had my stoked shirt on and this elderly women turned around and says " oh, is that the new darell stoke short"?????

Wtf!

I have been to hundreds of games at TBA, I've sat in every section and even the sky boxes. That being said, TBA is a great place to see a game. The blue hairs are going to be there forever, they drive me crazy but so be it. My biggest issue is the students, why don't more students show up??? I was at UT during the Houston years and rarely missed a game. Saw Shaq, Chris Jackson and Co come to town and Houston and Wiseman put up 38 each on them. Saw The Cuse roll in and Houston broke the scoring record that night.

People just need to get off their butts and get to the arena and while you're there stand up and make some noise. Let's be honest though, we're never gonna be Rupp, Cameron Indoor, The Dean Dome etc. those places are the mecca of college hoops

Top Ten Loudest Arenas (ESPN)

Allen Field House - 16,000
Cameron Indoor - 10,000
Rupp - 23,000
UNM Arena (New Mexico) - 15,411
O'Connel (Florida) - 12,000
Peterson Center (Pitt) - 12,500
Bramlage (KSU) - 12,500
Assembly Hall (Illinois) - 16,600
Gallagher (OSU) - 13,600
Matthew Knight - (Oregon) - 12,300

TBA seats 24,600. Notice the difference. As earlier posters mentioned, if we had a normal size arena, last night's game would have been a sellout.

Not only does a smaller arena help with acoustics but also with the psyche of the crowd.
If the game is a sellout, then those in attendance feel special. They are going to be more excited and the result is more noise. If anyone can get a ticket, then suddenly the experience isn't as special and there is less enthusiasm.

Cool, because this thread was about Kensucky, like every other thread in the 'Tennessee Vols Basketball' forum.

Back to all the Blue Hairs that have the best seats. Rarely do they get excited and make any noise. I sat in Section 113 last night and stood up and yelled several times when the Vols made a great play, etc.. However, only 30% of the people around me ever stood up and cheered. It's like they think they're at the Opera or something. THen, with 4 minutes left and the VOls up by double digits, they rush to the exits like their is a fire drill. However, I will say it's still as good or better than most other SEC venues for a weeknight game.

This.
It would help if they would expand the lower level student section.

NOOOOOOO!

About 25 students showed up for SC, why would you give then more seating, so that the lower ball looks even emptier in tv? They didn't even full the student section 3/4 last night. Start filling it up then it's a discussion, but you can't ask for more when you can't fill what you got.

Good find! Goes to show Louisville and cuse who are above us in attendance aren't on that list. In order to get maximum noise out of our fan base, 17k would be the max capacity IMO.

Believe it or not, Duke has had trouble selling out their little arena this season for most games. THis is a fact.

Really? There capacity is 9,314. There average attendance..............9,314.

FACT!

That means they sold out every game in case you couldn't tell.
