Winthrop-Solid team, quality coach, tournament experience.
Seton Hall- Saw them live Wednesday night. Tennessee can certainly handle them.
Wichita State-Quality personnel, good coach. Post player would give Vols trouble.
UNC- Roy's done a great job, team is too young.
Michigan State- Great tourney coach, battle tested. Class of this group.

I was wondering how long it would take for Hatvol96 to chime in. Tell me you'll be at the Atlanta regional so I can finally meet you.

If I make a first round venue, it'll probably be either Philadelphia or Jacksonville, depending on which office my company has me working out of later in the week.

Actually, been flying to Fort Lauderdale on short notice for business. Only saw the first three brackets before I had to catch my flight, so I haven't digested the region with Villanova yet. Stunned doesn't begin to describe my reaction to UT's seed. Winthrop will be a credible first round opponent. As an aside, how do Utah State and Air Force make the tournament ahead of Cincinnati and Hofstra?

i think the explanation for airforce was that they were the second best team in their conference which was the 8th best conference in the country. still doesnt explain why cincy and hofstra are not in. so you still think tennessee cant get to the sweet 16? the road is still hard, but is looking alot better then it did yesterday eh?

Hofstra with a #21 rpi not making the tournament is amazing, seems like a real injustice. I assume they thought their conference was way overrated. Cincinnati has a great history as well and an RPI #47.

Tennessee doesn't have anyone in their quad that I think would clearly beat them. Winthrop will be tough. Wichita State is solid. From what I saw, Seton Hall is finished.

The UT vs WSU game is going to be a tough game. WSU is a sleeper in that bracket.

that being said, tennessee can beat all these teams with their B game. Winthrop is good, but come on a 2 seed losing to a 15 never happens like some suggest will happen. if we get seton hall in the second round, I will feel great about our chances making it to the sweet 16

UC beat Syracuse, West Virginia, LSU, Northern Iowa, and Murray State. That's more tourney teams than Air Force and Utah State combined, then multiplied by two.

Arizona got upset a couple of years as a no. 2 seed.

Tennessee can't beat Wichita State at anything less than optimum performance.

It's interesting how seeds and quality of opponents don't always match up as well as one might think.

Winthrop is about as high a quality #15 as you'll find - could easily be a 14 and maybe a 13. Vols are a weak #2 and should more likely be a #3 or #4.

My other team UAB is a #9 and as a result get to play Kentucky and then UConn if they win. Compare that to Alabama at #10, they play Marquette then UCLA if they win. In this scenario, the #10 seed has an easier path to the Sweet 16 than the #9 seed does.

The Selection Committee, the same geniuses who are telling me that Air Force and Utah State are more deserving of participation in the NCAA tournament than Cincinnati, would say that Alabama has a tougher route because the collective seeding assigned by the "S" curve means a Marquette/UCLA pairing is tougher than UK/UCONN. That's why the Selection Committe should be locked in a dark room filled with rattlesnakes, Black Mambas, and King Cobras. Figuratively, of course.

I understand how they get there but IMHO, the relative distance between the #7 and #8 in this case (Marquette vs Kentucky) is considerably smaller than that between #1 and #2 (UConn and UCLA). Put another way, I think UAB has a slightly easier Round 1 game but a much tougher Round 2 game.

I'll go further. If I were a coach, I'd much rather play Marquette than Kentucky.

Can't argue with that either. That said, I think UAB matches up well with UK - don't know enough about Marquette's style to say.

Marquette doesn't do anything unique, except for the fact that they have a 6'9" three point specialist, Steve Novak. Dominic James v. Ronald Steele should be fun to watch.

even though they sound good, I mean come on they didnt play a whole bunch of hard teams. I mean Auburn beat them, they cant be that good.
they are a very solid ball club. They lost of Auburn but almost beat Bama, and only lost by 10 to Memphis. This game may be closer than the winner of Seton Hall/Wichita State game, if we play them. It'll be tougher then most think, we play by far the hardest 15th seed there.

Winthrop also won at Marquette.

I just read Buzz P's take on this matchup. (he did beat them twice) It seems Winthrop is a half-court kind of team. This does not help us unless we can get them out of their gameplan. We need to dictate the tempo and run them to death. If our press can create turnovers it could be over early. If we allow them to run their offense for 30 seconds every time down the floor and keep the score in the 60's then it will be tough. I just hope the guys don't come out rusty from their long break.

BTW, Buzz says he's cheering for us!

There's a lot of parity in college B-ball.

Winthrop played Bama tough but lost to Auburn. Bama got dismantled by Temple but beat Auburn twice. Temple was not that good this year but spanked GW in the conf. tourney. etc. etc. etc.

agreed, we beat UF twice, but lost easier games. Thats why they play em, its any given game.
