With 7 wins,is Coach Fulmers job secure?

I would argue that CPF has been, in the totality of the matter a good coach -- perhaps very good. However, I reject the notion that he is "great" for the same reasons mentioned by others.

When the discussion is strictly confined to field coaching, I'd say he/his staffs have been mediocre given the level of talent they've traditionally had to work with. They've had superior talent for the better part of his tenure (NFL players), with championships and big game wins inconsistent with that talent.

True fans Stand behind the a proven coach even when he is down. The mark of a good coach is championships. the mark of a great coach is staying on top and always having a chance and doing it for a long time. look at bowden, paterno, and even cowher. People have called for their jobs a few times but in the end they are still at the top in the game. people who let a couple bad years affect them are called fairweather fans. better known as bandwagoners. improvement is the key. as far as talent trending down. only Miami has more players in the NFL (42) than UT (40). Will there be another Jamal lewis at UT? Maybe. But you have to look at the talent there. I played some of the greats of the Phil fulmer era and must say that Role players are still the top of the class at UT. look at the starting defense from the 97-98 season. There were greats but there were some guys who truly played there role. Our Starting D right now has just as many potential superstars as then. And in my oppinion better role players. Quit criticizing. If you know so much more than Phil then why aren't you the coach?

Good post P. Nothing worse than fair weather fans or ones with unrealistic expectations.

I agree. Expecting to win an SEC title in an eight year span is totally unrealistic. We should set our sights on annual trips to the Music City Bowl.

How many SEC titles do you think would be fair to expect over a 10 year period?

Incidentally, I hear an updated stat of CPF's win% versus ranked teams, and it left a little to be desired. If someone has those stats through current, it be nice to look at.

i couldn't agree more. we should aim high though hat, we might hit the peach every now and then.:)

Championships make a "good" coach, but simple longevity make a "great" coach? That's laughable. the facts are simple. TCHFCATUTK has won 2 SEC tiles in 14 years. That's absolutely not greatness. I don't think eight season without a championship is exactly "staying on top."

my thoughts exactly.

In the SEC-E, there have really been only 3 teams for quite a while now. Therefore, IMO, we should expect a trip to Atlanta at least every 3 years and consider anything more than that an acheivement. You expect to win at least half of those, so as I've said before, realistically, we need to produce an SEC title every 5 years.

Quit being unreasonable. We should take our minor bowl appearances, and the beatdowns from mediocre ACC teams that come with said bids, and be thankful. All hail TCHFCATUTK, the only person who can win more than 6 games a season at UT. If Pete Carroll were the coach at UT, he'd win no more than 5 games per season. TCHFCATUTK is the only thing between UT and D-II status. Can't you people see that?

My minimum expectation is an SEC title on average every 6 years and to play in the SEC championship game at least once every 3 years.

Looking at the SEC East, there are only 3 programs who should compete for SEC East title (UT, UGA, UF) so an even split with those programs means an SEC East crown once every 3 years. UT should be expected to have at least a .500 record in the SEC title game so that gives an average of one title every 6 years.

I am about where you are. I'd say win the SEC twice every 10 years, on average. Perhaps between 2-3.

But you're right; in order to win it you need to get there maybe twice that much.

LSU, GA, FL, BAMA, AUB, TN = six teams, 3 each side

Even if we assume total parity, that divides up to about 3 trips to the show every decade -- and a wild card. Of course, it doesn't work that way; and when you're good, you need to get there on a better than average basis while there's an advantage.

Still, about 2 or 3 seems rational. Besides, if you can't win at an expected average, then you're surely not great by any stretch.

Wow. Who the eff do you think you are? Since when are YOU the judge of what makes a real fan? You told us we aren't real fans, we shouldn't speak up with our thoughts, and that we should apply to be the coach.

Terrible post.

Don't aim too high, you are assuming we would be bowl elegible every year.

agree 100%, real fans do speak up, we care enough to speak up when our program cant compete with the top schools in the SEC, it pains me greatly to see LSU and UF flex their muscles and push us around ON OUR OWN FIELD!

06 Media Guide says Fulmer is 39-27 against ranked teams.....0.59%.

I think that's a fair way of looking at things. We've actually met your criteria for the last few years for trips to Atlanta, but no doubt we haven't won the big one lately.

Yep. And "great" coaches win big games. We, perpetually, have talent. It's time for a "big one." Anyone disagree?

I think, with our returning squad, our expectations for '07 should be high. Very high. Nice comeback season, barring collapse, this year. But, next year, we should all be hungry or expect some changes to be made.

That early schedule next year is brutal, but if we make it to Mid-September undefeated, we ought to win them all.

Anybody got September 15th circled on next year's calendar?

I know the Cal trip will probably be tough, although I, admittedly, do not know how many starters they'll be losing. Other than the Florida game, the SEC schedule reminds me of a particular Southern breakfast favorite made with greasy meat, flour, milk, and cracked black pepper.

It's definitely not a bad thing to trade LSU for Mississippi State.

I am going to have to give my lecture on the fraudulent nature of the Cal program again this offseason?
