With possibly 4wrs gone for bowl game ?

These wide receivers who are opting out of the bowl game and transferring shows a lot about their love for football. They can be practicing and getting better instead of playing video games for all hours of the day and eating munchies. Why wouldn't they announce until after the bowl game is over? If they are any good... coaches will find them and their current coaches would back them too.

For the guys transferring, there are a limited # of spots available at other schools, in large part due to the effects of the Covid year on eligibility with no increase in scholarships. A coach for another team can’t contact a player about possibly transferring until that player has entered the transfer portal. There have been a lot of fringe P5 players over the last 2 years that entered the transfer portal and ended up on bad G5 teams or FCS schools.

Say our #6 WR enters the transfer portal. That opens a scholarship on the team. Then the best G5 corner enters the portal. Heupel contacts him and he signs with UT. Our old #6 WR doesn’t get any offers from good teams so he contacts Heupel and asks to come back. Too late cause his scholarship has been taken by that star corner so he’ll have to come back as a walk on.

It's a financial decision. They are not eating munchies and playing video games. They are hiring private trainers and chefs to get into the absolute best shape they can be for the combines. You have to understand that this is a one shot deal. If they succeed, it will be a moon shot for them and family. If you play in the bowl, you may win a ring. If you shine in the combines, you can be set for life. It does not reflect badly on UT.

I was commenting on the early transfers and not the NFL ready players. Is it really better for a player who can't sniff the field to hit the transfer portal before the season is over? When he could be getting useful reps in practice or the actual game? Why say no to extra reps in pads and helmet and getting coached up individually by position coaches for free for the next 3 to 5 weeks? You have a world class gym, fitness trainers and a nutritionist for free while you are still part of the team too. So why is that not getting taken advantage of until the season is complete for the transferee is all I'm asking? Does the transferee think he can spend the next 3 or 5 weeks on his own with better use of their time is all I'm asking? If someone is eligible for the nfl draft and grades out well enough to make millions then I also say go for it. The transferee who wants to bail on valuable time to grow as a football player does not make sense to me. Where is the advantage for the transferee?

Guessing the calculation is they can start communication with other schools as soon as they go in the portal and not before.

Matthews is being realistic. There's too much money at stake today, you're talking about a kid's future.

Totally agree with him on bowl games. Coaches know the season is over, but the extra practices and the game give them a jump on next season, to be able to look at guys you'll be counting on.

Fans put their own emotions front and center, and believe players should feel the same way, and the draft can wait. Matthews offered up a nice reality check.

Agree. I was surprised he said “the outcome of bowl games doesn’t matter” since he is old school and a competitor. However, he’s exactly correct as bowls, unless playoffs, are similar to an exhibition game.
