Woke companies are crazy

I posted this in the Trans ideology thread. This is the better place for it:

watching the Bud Light saga from a strictly marketing point of view - seems like a disaster. The VP in charge of marketing essentially threw current customers under the bus with her comments in hopes of attracting new customers by this change in campaign.

it's the modern equivalent of the "It's not your father's Oldsmobile anymore" which successfully informed the Olds customer base that we aren't for you any more and informed the hoped for new customer base of young buyers that we've traditionally been a brand for old people but now we are for young people. When it failed miserably it was the final nail in the coffin and GM got rid of Oldsmobile.

the marketing VP's argument was that BL sales were sliding. the question is why? I presume it was in line with sales of other mainline brands as both a proliferation of new beer options enter the market AND a proliferation of alternative alcoholic beverages like seltzers, canned cocktails etc.

my guess is this will cost more customers than it gains and that's just poor decision making if your goal is to reverse, halt or even slow the sales decline.

It's also a product of today's society. Online influencers, specifically. I honestly don't get it, but I'm an older guy. These folks have millions of followers so it does make sense for businesses to leverage them in marketing. Now, the downside to that is situations like Mulvaney. Even though this is only one of hundreds of similar campaigns, it gets blown way out of proportion in our information-rich society. I guarantee this is a tiny fraction of their overall marketing, but you'd think AB is only advertising to LGBTQ folks now. It's wild.

yep. when I first heard about it, from the uproar I was thinking they put Mulvaney on cans they were selling to the public but it was just one for her. the influencer path brings all the foibles of celebrity endorsers but with people that are harder to vet and are likely to have shorter public lifespans. our instant world can go bad in an instant. BL had to know that trans is a polarizing issue now. Nike has a history of embracing the polarization; BL doesn't. Will be a case study some day.

for me the comments from the VP dogging the brand and it's traditional customers is the weirdest part. unless you are going for a total reset it's never a good idea to diss your best customers even if unintentionally

Yeah, that was bad. Why would you ever openly alienate your existing customer base?

I wondered if the uproar is really affecting sales as negatively as portrayed. So, while visiting one of the local liquor stores, I asked. Just curious, not being political. The owner also owns two convenience stores. Said their usual order for BL is 30 cases a week. Their last order was for three. And it is hitting other AB brands, just not as hard.

I don’t really understand the uproar. The promotion involves one of hundreds of influencers hired by Bud. It doesn’t attempt to alienate Bud drinkers. It simply shows support for LBGTQ community.

Why does this so offend Bud drinkers?

Because they are wimps and can't ignore crap like this. Plenty more beers better than Bud on the market. As like you, I don't understand the uproar. Move on to another better tasting Beer.

It’s basically the “go ef yourself” mentality of corporations these days. To cater to a such a small minority of mentally obtuse individuals , I mean just dedicate a can to retarded monkeys. Probably just as many of them as trannies.

There is a hyper-sensitivity right now, especially on social media, to anything which can be interpreted as "wokeness."

Does anyone else remember the right-wing outrage over Pink Floyd commemorating the 50th Anniversary of "Dark Side of the Moon?" Ignorant right-wingers were reacting to the prism displayed on the cover ... but a prism was on the original album cover. It was not an homage to gay rights.

I can only speak for myself, but I would not be aware of most of these campaigns against "social injustice and discrimination," if it wasn't for the right-wing making such a fuss over them.

Think they would give me a can if I was celebrating 365 days of identifying as black? Stop being willfully ignorant. The masses aren’t going to cheer on mentally ill people. When they do, we are done.

... or maybe some people are going in search of offense these days? It's become trendy to fight against "wokeness."

Pink Floyd’s Fake Fans Clowned for Being Triggered By ‘Woke’ Rainbow – Rolling Stone

^^^^ This is the Pink Floyd story I mentioned up above. ^^^^

Good take. It was a tone deaf decision akin to saying "we need more customers, let's look at markets we're not penetrating. There's a glaring lack of outreach to Jihadi Islamists forbidden to drink; anyone tapping that yet???"
