Western civilization is cruising towards the Dark Ages... only we have COVID instead of Bubonic Plague.Brits dont like working either UK job vacancies hit record high amid worker shortages
I doubt the lazy bums will work for that pay eitherBasically just killed the restaurant industry. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a tremendous pull back after the next crash. Going out to dinner will be left to those that can afford to go to high end restaurants that can pay $18-20/hr for dishwashers.
Perfect. Will give me more reason to just avoid people more. Get off my lawn.Basically just killed the restaurant industry. That was the whole issue with the shut downs. You cant lock even just one section down, and not have impacts. We locked down most of the country for a while. Now we are seeing that fallout. Sure Covid is not the only thing to blame, but it's the one thing that's different, the straw that broke the camel's back. Camel is the economy. The workers backs may have been breaking for a while but our response to Covid through the economy for a loop we arent going to get out of easily. The longer we continue our response to Covid the worse it gets. This is interesting. A lot of the restaurant workers in this area for sure fall into the immigration issue and child care issue camps.
At a meta level, the "way things work" has been upended for so many people (I'll catch a ride with you and pick up the kids, or I'll finish juco here then apply to a four year school, or I have an in for an air conditioner training job) that people have given up trying to make their old routines work. I see it even in my work and it cascades.
There used to be a person at an agency that I depended on to forward to me x, y, z mail. She is out due to child care covid issues. The person who took her place has to leave early to do something, God know what, that was not part of the routine before. So x, y, and z are slow to get to me, which stresses my people as we scramble last minute to address something that used to happen seamlessly.
Disruption of our own daily lives and those we interact with is a very real thing right now, and it doesn't just stop at point 1.

People will say "we couldnt have foreseen this" but in reality many have been saying it, just some people didnt want to listen.
When the job issue comes from both sides, there is no way to adjust.
The economy should have never been shut down for this virus. That is the core of the issue. Trying to blame vaccines that only came out 10 months ago for a problem that was created 20 months ago is silly. Its a balancing act. The key to ending the response to Covid at the earliest point which is both responsible from a public health point of view and which minimizes disruption as much as possible is for people to get vaccinated and do a few basic sensible other things to force it to run its course faster.
The irony of the anti-response crowd and their claim that the covid response is hurting the economy is that they, by their irresponsibility and selfishness as to vaccines and masks, are a primary reason we are making slower progress than we would all otherwise like.
Leveraging relationships you have formed over many years is also a major factor . Good job. It's crazy. I work for a hospitality company that offers its service staff competitive base wages and healthcare. When I started putting out feelers for jobs, I quickly found that I had hired a full staff in less than a month.
It's just nuts to me how that works!
Covid is going to covid. There's been a lot of vaccinated people catching it. For the vast majority of the problems discussed here, the answer was absolutely to keep living. For child care, Covid is a nothing burger for children, and likely a nothing burger for the young teachers with the healthiest immune systems on the planet. Yet we've got local health departments shutting down child care facilities because two kids got sick. When RSV has been running rampant with a lot more impact. Its a balancing act. This. End thread. Not everyone is meant for a white collar job just like not everyone has the skills to do certain blue collar jobs. Neither is better or worse than the other, they’re just different paths with the same goal. I’d be very proud if one of my boys became an electrician, welder, or whatever. As long as it provides a living and they are happy then all is good!
