Workers are applying for jobs left and right, but hearing nothing back

You were riding in the back of a pickup truck, the excursion was built on the F-250 chassis. I never road in the back seat, that was for kids and other pests along for the ride. Front seat ride was smooth as glass. Only SUV made that could haul 7-8 people, all their stuff and pull a 6k lbs boat or camper.
I road in every row at some point. Others were better but not great.

Maybe the market needs to respond... or the regulators need to respond.

I'm not sure where you are going with that, but within the last couple of years here, there was at least one accident with fatalities where a drug impaired truck driver used cars in front of him to stop his truck ... with fatalities and injuries. As I recall you favor legalizing pot, but the last I knew tests will still show use weeks later, so how could you tell whether someone was impaired or used it a couple of weekends ago? Recent alcohol use and tests trend pretty well; however, it's less clear cut for drugs that result in reduced safety in the workplace.

My gmc went completely nuts a few weeks ago.

AC blew hot. Light went dark and off. Nav went into some comp melt down.

We had literally no idea what it was so I start googling and I am getting all different kind of answers.

We take it to the dealer and the bad was bad.

Praise Jesus it was just a bad battery but it didn’t stop the car and turn it dead it made the car like something out of a Stephen king novel.

They have made it to were you can’t do anything yourself anymore.

My son called me one day to ask about his power steering issue. The symptoms didn't make sense at all to me, but after stopping (possibly at a car dealer) it was going fine again with nothing done. Turns out his power steering is electric rather than hydraulic. I admit I quit working on cars a while ago, but I hadn't even heard that some power steering systems on normal gas engine cars were electric these days. I can see where it could be less complex and maybe even better, but it was news to me. Power assists on driving controls are one thing (some of us actually had cars without power steering and brakes), but complete fly by wire controls if they exist are disturbing to me.

I'd bet those employee shortages are on the material handler jobs. Sorting packages, driving equipment, loading trucks/planes. I doubt they're having a shortage on education required/skilled positions. That Portland example from the article sounds like they don't have enough sort employees to process the volume they need.

I'm wondering where all the people that quit, changed jobs, or would have taken one of those jobs......where did they go to instead that's left such an employee shortage. It isn't just Portland I'm sure. Or Fedex as everyone sees help needed signs.

What are those people doing now instead for money?

There’s never a shortage of bean counters.

I'm sure if they really wanted to verify recent use, a test could be done. Hell, they've allegedly found a miracle vaccine in less than 10 months.

When I was 17 I worked at blockbuster and my manager had a fiero that had no power steering. We would go bowling after work at Columbus palace and he would drink Busch mills and get trashed and I would drink maybe one or two (because nobody ever carded back then lol) and then I would drive us home. Power steering is one of the great inventions in my opinion lol.

I have mixed feeling about power steering. For low speed - like parking maneuvering around a parking lot - yes. I prefer something that has feedback and isn't twitchy on the road.

It already had to be legislated that employers in Work at VC Will states could terminate for any reason they want to without explanation.

It's almost like you have a deep seeded disdain for laborers.
You gonna regulate those who quit with out notice??

I had dinner with our Chief Legal Counsel a few weeks ago. He said we weren't doing anything until the regulations are in place and have survived legal challenges. He thinks it's months away from being implemented
My asshat company is already leaning on the admin’s authoritarian decree on fed employees and contractors shall be vaccinated and set the start of next year as the deadline for all employees to be vaccinated or…. 🤷‍♂️

I know for a fact a lot of our young people aren’t vaccinated. And we can’t hire enough competent engineers already. My company is managed by morons.

Yep, it is industry wide. I've heard some rumblings about people either retiring or quitting... more than I had expected.
