Yeah, because being named coach of the year makes one a good coach. Ever heard the name Rod Barnes?

And this Rod Barnes guy has had success at three different teams/levels as a head coach? Oh wait, he hasn't. He had one good year at Ole Miss.

Anyone who wants to see how Pearl's tenure here will play out can just go pull Tom Davis' numbers at Iowa.

And was named COY. I am just arguing the merit of your argument that being named COY makes one a good coach.

Hat, if you were AD at UT, how would you go about correcting the coaching problem at UT? I just think we would lose some credibility out there if we fire the guy right now, and it might impact our coaching search. I think if we do hit a wall over the next 2-3 years and are not able to get past where we are right now, a change could be made much more smoothly.

Yeah...whether Pearl is a "good coach" or not, his style has undoubtedly worked everywhere he's been, at least in the regular season. He has had 20 wins every season and has finished either first or second in his conference every time too, I believe. Tourney success is undoubtedly more important, but as I said yesterday, Tennessee has never really had a team that has been both athletic and mature. When that happens in a few years, then we can really see what Pearl is made of.

I'm not. It never, ever, ever happens, but be gets hammered after his level of winning here, and we would struggle to hire.

At the pay level UT has established, I could walk into the NABC hotel at the Final Four and hire 10 guys better than Pearl in 15 minutes.

My argument included success at three different teams/levels - taking all three to the highest levels they had ever been as a program. If I had just said, "hey, but he had a COY award" and that's it, then your Rod Barnes quip would have invalidated my argument. He's a good coach. He just hasn't proven to be a great coach, which is what it will take for us to get past where we are right now.

There's nothing to do right now. You're stuck with him. He has built up incredible equity with the portion of the fanbase that doesn't know if a basketball is stuffed or inflated. Also, had I been the AD in the Spring of '05, Bruce Pearl would have never gotten within 200 miles of Knoxville.

Well, as much fun as the healthy debate has been, I'm off. I think we all want success for UT's basketball team. I'm in the camp that CBP should be given a bit more time before we pull the trigger on a new coach, but I'm not a Pearlophile/Fulmerite that believes past success buys you a free reign to fail. We'll learn a lot about whether CBP can succeed over the next 2-3 years, but it's nice that success/failure for UT's basketball team is no longer measured simply in NCAA appearances.

D2 Championships and Sweet Sixteens mean exactly crap. Look through the list of past Sweet Sixteen participants and you will find such juggernauts as UT Chattanooga, Valparaiso and Cleveland State.

The Pearl critics are wrong. However, I agree that he needs to do something about the horrendous foul shooting and the play ground antics that causes missed shots and bad passes. We had a 2 on 1 break away and absolutely blew it because Hopson wanted to make the highlight reels with a pass and dunk when he and our other player could have made an easy pass for a layup. Foul shots and layups aren't sexy and don't make highlight films, but they sure do win games.

"Built up incredible equity"....Sounds like Fulmer-speak...

I asked earlier on another thread who you wanted back when Buzz got the boot....I haven't seen an answer...Just wondering...

I am not happy with this loss or with any of the other 10 the Vols have suffered this year...I think the talking heads all had Tennessee rated too high in the preseason in the first place...Overall I think they have done about the best they could have done...Losing Smith and Lofton was not going to be easy to replace...19-11 with a share of the SEC East isn't all that bad....Maybe some of you folks don't remember the depths the Vols had fallen....I think they have some attitude problems on this team..I think they have some players more worried about their spot in the NBA Draft than the name on the front of their jerseys..I think that's the problem you run into when you recruit players that most gurus don't think are going to stay four years....BTW..I don't think any of our current players need to worry about the NBA at this point...

Talking about Bruce Pearl needing to be fired is more than silly at this point though....

People get way too high after wins and way too low after losses....

hat..I don't necessarily disagree with you on some of your points about Pearl...The stuff with some of the players getting in trouble...The obvious lack of an organized looking halfcourt O or D....Really though, he likes to run a helter skelter type of game pressing and shooting threes and we don't have the players with either the want to or the abilty to run his scheme at this time....

I am far more pleased with Tennessee now than when they had Houston, McNeil or Peterson running the show though....
