Worst basketball fans ever

If you're going to blast fans on this one, you'd have a better shot discussing the legions of hand-sitting ticket holders. They pay the bills, but the games are more of a movie than a live-action sporting event. Tied up with a minute to go, I don't care who you're playing, should be an exciting time.

That said, the loss was inexcusable, as were the 12 (12 right?) missed free throws. Looked like Memphis out at the charity stripe.

I agree with this point, but will add something. We've finally witnessed Pearl building his team to a creshenda at the right time. This loss was a fluke. I think it could be very providential in that it stokes the fire going into the tourney of a team that has continually grown leaps and bounds over the last few weeks. Pearl will be able to use this "fluke" to hammer and refocus....get some serious sessions in and have a hungry team take the floor next week. IMO

Let me start of saying I hope what you say is what happens...

However, we're in the time of year that Vol fans turn into Cub fans (and I'm one of those too so I know how it feels). Every year this is when we say "This will be the year we make some noise in the tournament", and specifically we always say this is the year we do well in the SECT. After getting burned yet again last year, my motto is now I'll believe it when I see it.

While they COULD take this egg they laid and use it for motivation, I think the odds are greater they take this egg they laid and follow it up with another egg. That's just how it's been at UT. It's not even a Pearl thing really, UT has always sucked at the SECT with the exception of about 2 tournaments.

Pearl is the best thing to happen to UT basketball since the Don DeVoe days. This team does not have that killer instinct and the free throws are inexcusable as well as the missed layups. I have said it before, the playground needs to close. Instead of trying to see how cute we can be at fancy lobs and dunks which count no more than a regular shot, work hard on the fundamentals make your free throws and layups or there should be consequences. Today it was losing to an inferior team at home. Pearl has to bear some responsibility. I saw where somone asked John Wooden what he thought of the fancy slam dunks. He said well they may look nice but that player would be sitting over on the bench next to me. There are lots of great athletes in college but few basketball players.

Great post. These kids are not on the playground and this is the responsibility of the head coach. BP is a good coach but now that he has recruited "his type of player" it is time to step up.

I have a simple question. First, however, let me start off by saying that I think Pearl is a "good" coach. He has his flaws, that I am aware of. Now to my question. To the anti-Pearl crowd, what would CBP have to do to be considered a good coach in your eyes? I know it has been mentioned that Sweet 16 appearances aren't enough, and winning championships is what a coach is measured by. Let me throw this out there:

Did you know:
- It took Roy Williams 9 seasons at Kansas before he won an outright Big 10 Championship. (He also won the Big 12 tourney that year).

-John Calipari still hasn't won a National Championship. However, he does have several conference championship trophies from the powerhouse conferences Atlantic 10 and Conference USA.

-Billy Donovan won his first SEC Regular Season Championship in his 4th year with Florida. It took him 9 seasons to win his first NCAA Championship.

-Mike Krzyzewski won his first ACC Regular Season and Tournament Championship in 1986. His first season at Duke was 1980. It took Coach K 11 years to win his first NCAA Tournament.

This is CBP's 4th season here, and I believe it may be a little premature to start with the bashing.

Coack K didn't win it all till '91. He did make it the F4 in 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990 though.

Yeah, I saw that right after I posted. I would have deleted it if I could find the option.

What are the fan's expectation levels for UT? Regular season and SECT champs? F4? A Ring?

One mans opinion:

The more I think about this list, the more I realize why the SEC will only get 2-3 teams in the NCAA tourny this year.

I must way i was against coach pearl early on in the sec season. I think we have come on very well and think he did a good job. One loss is not going to ruin aour season. Its not like bama is a terrible team. they are very athletic. we will be fine.

tennesee fans should be embarrassed how bad you are... after thursday you said how great a job pearl did getting this team to win the sec east and after a loss where it took a miracle shot to beat us.... everyone goes back on the we suck and fire pearl bandwagon can you people pick a side and stop flip flopping back and forth for every good win we have and every loss we get... so its pearl fault that we missed half are ft's 2day no its on the players...

i dont care wat anyone has to say but pearl has done a great job with these kids and how far they have come with that schedlue they have played and lets see how it finishes out... he coached better then donavan and gillesie has with a more veteran and experianced team

Dear esteemed Volnation poster, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Take note Pro-Pearl crowd (at least a good deal of you), this is what a rational argument looks like. Calling our opinions "stupid" or saying we are "bad fans" is not a rational argument

Also, I wasn't saying I measure coaches by NCAA championships, that would be a little unfair. Bruce does have the one SEC Championship, I'll give him that. Other than that, the resume is awfully weak though. I know a lot of other people will agree with me when I say that he is a great PR guy, decent to good recruiter, but at best, a mediocre Xs and Os guy. That just won't cut it for long.

3 division championships and 4 NCAA tournaments are "weak"?

96-34 is "weak"?

7-1 against Florida is "weak"?

...at Tennessee???

I wouldn't call his resume weak by any means especially considering it's Tennessee, but I do think 7-1 against Florida is kind of overblown. I know I'd trade 2 NCs and have Pearl 1-7 against Donovan. And he hasn't exactly changed our fortunes with Kentucky.

It's not like they're a good team either. They're 7-9 in a bad SEC. Don't act like they are some darkhorse to win the SECT. They are NIT all the way.
