Would expansion ruin Tennessee's run to win the east in 2012#

This might sound funny but Tennessee should consider leaving the SEC..we dont have the talent to compete with these other schools!

I believe the teams coming in have something to gain in being in the premier conferance. However the current SEC teams will have more compatition in recruiting as some kids will obviously chose to stay in state and be in the SEC. It could make our road back to the top more difficult, but more exposier could also help us at the same time. UT has a lot to offer for recruits and I think DD and staff can sell it. Change is coming whether we like it or not so we best prepare for it. It may not be that bad on us depending on who joins and how things are aligned. If we pick up some ACC team for the east we would likely drop a west team off our schedule. I enjoy the games against west opponents, but in reality they are on top right now. It will make things more interesting to say the least.

You could go with 10 conference games broken down as 7 division games, 3 cross division(1 of those permanent, 2 rotating), and 2 ooc.

I don't want to be a negavol, but I think that if FSU and Clemson was to join the SEC that it would highly minimize our chances to win the east because the noles aren't no push over team. Even with Clemson always being overrated u still can't count them out.

I have heard many conflicting reports about FSU interest in joining SEC. Some say they have been in talks for months with the SEC and the FSU President denies the interest. I have heard there has to be a 75% majority vote by SEC Presidents to let the Aggies join. You would think the SEC would have already conducted a straw poll with the SEC Presidents before they pursued the Aggies. As far as UT's chances to win a title if FSU joined the SEC east, think it doesn't hurt it as much as some think. This super conference scenario is gaining a lot of momentum and don't think it can be stopped. The only down side to more teams joining the SEC it will increase the rotation cycle of teams from other division from 2 years to at least 3 years or more. Not sure that's a good thing for a traditional rivalry with Auburn or LSU. And if this trend continues and ends with 4 super conferences, will this lead to a playoff system and will it spell the end of the bowl system?

To the 'praise machine' (whatever the hell that is) I say **** and never come back. I hear Vandy needs some more fans.

If we add 4 more teams to the conference, whoever they may be aside from a&m, we will do what the NFL already does: 4 divisions with 4 teams apiece with 8 teams apiece in a north/south east/west fashion.

Now, the teams with the top records in each division would play the other top team in their league, the winners of those 2 games would face each other in the SEC and the winner of that game would play in the national championship almost by default every single year.

I don't see how this doesn't benefit us. Stop being so short-sighted and conservative volnation! Oh, wait....

I'd like to see how we build on last year before I start hyping 2012. I still think it'll be a big year for the program, but let's not automatically pencil in losses based on how things MIGHT shape up.

exactly. we're almost .500 in conference games over the last 6 years... why is 2012 going to be any different?

Members of the Presidental Oversight Committee members agreed unanimously in principle an offer from ESPN to televise 15 BCS games 2010-2013. In 2009 the group agreed to consider proposals from any conference for 2015 (I think 15 is a typo on BCS web sight and should be 2014) and thereafter. Change is coming..... Doug Matthews on the Zone thinks we will have 4 super conferences (4 regions) with a national champion decided from playoff $$$$. This will be football only and include independents, 64-70 teams. A new division will be added to the national divisions. The SEC is looking for teams for tv market, rivalries, and quality programs to join our conference. With 16 teams we could have 4 divisions resulting in a playoff for conference champion $$$$. Interesting thoughts?

The thinking is--with which I agree--is that Tennessee won't be able to recruit as well. Right now our biggest selling point is that you can play in the SEC, see Dalton Santos. That leverage is gone if teams like A&M or FSU are actually in the SEC. Expansion wouldn't hurt as much if we are only adding teams like Mizzou and Clemson; its the "big boys" joining that could really make it difficult for Tennesee to get back to elite status. This year on the field could really help or hurt as far as getting the true recruiting mojo back that existed back in the day.

Then maybe Tenn. will start paying attention to its high school programs and stop looking down its nose at Memphis. Then we'd increase the level of quality recruits within the state who WANT to play for Tenn.

That aside I think will not suffer as much as some think. The real key is having the right kind of coaches, field competitive teams, play schedules without fear of OOC teams which sells the opportunity to beat ND, OKLA. or whoever else we schedule. This timid schedule we're milking these days is shameful. Hey recruit, how'd you like to be part of a team with a chance to kick (insert big name OOC opponent here) and on national TV to boot.

Point? Play this expansion thing right and we're fine. But I'm serious about the state paying attention to its high schools producing more quality recruits. Maybe foster the hiring of coaching staffs dedicated to developing youngsters into college level talents. It serves these coaches well to be known as talent pipelines people. To you scared of Texas A&M an expansion people, you make UT look like we're Kentucky the way you talk. Shame! The greatest compliment, the one I will always cherish despite it being uttered by Steve Spurrier is:

"One of our players came up to me before the game and said, 'What makes those Tennessee players think they got a chance, coach?' Spurrier said. "He really said that. I looked at him and said, 'I'll tell you why, they aren't afraid of you or me or anybody.' Once-dismissed Gaffney makes good on second chance - CBS SportsLine

So I say, by gosh, stand up like Vols men. If anything, opponents should be afraid of us, not the other way around. We're going to have a team that makes this a reality again unless Dooley haters and negavols kill the momentum.

I don't get the whole recruiting angle. It's not like these schools didn't exist before. And besides, it would "hurt" everyone in the SEC, so if it affects Tennessee less than it does other schools it might actually be favorable to us in the recruiting department. FSU would hurt Florida more than UT, A&M would hurt the western schools, etc.
