Would you want Bruce Pearl back? [Pearl discussion — merged]

I went to school when Tennessee was winning SEC championships with Dale Ellis and coach Don DeVoe. Aside from an odd year or two, Tennessee basketball was pretty much irrelevant from that era until Pearl got to the Hill. He lied about a freakin’ barbecue which he hosted in an attempt to reel in top notch recruits. He LOVED UT. Almost got us to a final four if not for a last second shot by Michigan State and had us at #1 in the nation for a very brief stint after beating Kansas (or maybe it was Memphis).

Will always appreciate what Coach Bruce Pearl did for Tennessee. Plus his ex-wife naming her Knoxville salon Alimony was classic.
I don't understand the Bruce Pearl lovers, quite honestly. Sure, appreciate what he did while he was here, but you have to let it go at that. It's been 11 years since he coached here. He's moved on. So should everyone that still clings tight to his nuts, especially after he came in here tonight and sanctioned his team disrespecting our logo at the very place that still loves him much more than he really deserves. If his team needs to act like that to get themselves pumped up, then that's on them. Pearl can't get bent.

Without reading any comments and at halftime watching the replay of today's game and not knowing the outcome, I'm referring to Pearl as **** bag from now on because he looks like 10 lbs of **** in a 5 lb bag.

I don’t understand the hate for the guy because he took us to heights that we had never been in the NCAAT but he is no longer our coach. Barnes is our coach and we are lucky to have him after the Tyndall experiment. Barnes is about as good of a coach you could ask for at Tennessee and he also took us to heights we had never seen, just not the same NCAAT success yet. But that could all change this year.

Would you choose Pearl or Barnes to lead and prepare your team if the next game was the most important game of the year for you?

Without a doubt I would choose Pearl.

There's more creativity, more gamesmanship, more win at any cost, more do or die with Pearl.

He finds ways to get a few more incremental points to win games.

He's a gamer. He's a big game coach.
Creativity? He runs flex… I think Naismith ran it also. And I like Pearl but his offenses aren’t the best. See 6-8 minutes not scoring today.

It’s not hard. Tennessee had idiotic leadership ever since Dickey left and put the business first Hamilton in charge. Considering Bruce faced a near death penalty for his coaching career and went to a Final Four and national contender with Auburn, it’s clear that “what could have been” with Bruce at Tennessee this last decade would have easily resulted in more banners in TBA. Now yes he does own his mistake. Can’t blame anyone else. However, no one that is not clinically insane can say that Hamilton and Co. handled the situation even somewhat coherently. Hamilton literally went to the press the day before our tourney game basically saying Bruce won’t be here and then we get rolled.

Considering the “atrocitities” that were going on in the game at the time, Bruce was caught lying about a BBQ resulted in a show cause while Cal and Rose down I40 had what were basically ineligible players, Tobacco Road cheating/tutor scandals, etc.

Had Tennessee like the other schools told the NCAA to buzz off like countless other programs have done, Bruce prolly has Tennessee on new heights over last decade.

Regardless, I love Barnes and what his hire meant for us. He was the best resumè coach we have hired in our history before coming to Knoxville. I have no ill feelings towards Bruce and will always root for him when Tennessee isn’t playing them. It’s just a game at the end of the day. Both Bruce and Barnes have made positive impacts on the community and state off the court that speak louder than anything on the court.

I find it hard to believe that Bruce would risk getting fired at what is likely his biggest contract he’ll ever see again. Bruce would have to kill someone to get fired in this era of NCAA recruiting.
When he was here I would've found it hard to believe he would blatantly break the rules during a big investigation, but he did 4 days after crying about lying. Something will happen again.

The bump violation wasn’t a big ordeal as that literally happens with every coach. It just got put under the microscope. With that said, Bruce has been under microscope with Auburn as his first job since the show cause. Recruiting is much easier under this new system. The people claiming “just wait he’ll mess up again” are truly laughable.

The Bruce apologists keep leaving out the part about him lying to his bosses. His lying to the NCAA was just an easy way to get rid of an employee that couldn’t be trusted while avoiding pushback from the fans.

Um, not how the game ended.

Define Bruce apologist if you don't mind.

Y'all bitch about Bruce for no reason. A couple of posters want Bruce back, but you and others act like there are hundreds of posters on here begging for his return.

Why do you think this thread got started? Bruce’s name would hardly ever be mentioned, but it is when people clamor for him. The fact that he’s at a conference opponent makes it even more so.

If people wouldn’t bring it up, then posters wouldn’t bitch about him. Pretty easy to understand.

He's been cheating from the beginning as a BC ball boy. In the 1978 BC point-shaving scandal he's watching and learning. 1989 the Deon Thomas Incident at Iowa. 2004 Violations as Milwaukee, 2010 the Tennessee BBQ crying & Lying and show cause. Auburn the Chuck Person to prison under the Bus.2019 his assistant Ira Bowman man who hired Person was suspended for Bribery reports in 2018. I get it BP is a feel-good story for some Vols heart on his sleeve persona, great sense of humor, crying in public, being former BC mascot does silly things like painting his belly, Under that paint masking is a phony, cheat and a snitch. He's got a lifetime of doing it.

I mean, that's a lot of words to recap the timeline of events, but doesn't really address the overwhelming lust some of our fans still have for him. Is any of that history erased or reversed by the constant fawning?

He coaches the enemy now. That, in and of itself, doesn't mean you have to hate him, but coupled with his team's actions, yesterday, should at least cause his continual worshippers to realize he doesn't miss Tennessee near as much as they miss him. He's clearly moved on. So should we.

Lol. Bless your heart.

You can never go back and duplicate those first 3 seasons coming from outhouse to penthouse, black curtains to sell out crowds, David and Goliath wins on the road, bringing pizza to students waiting for Florida tickets, kicking the hell out of the gators. Great time to be a Vol fan but NO, would not want him back and I'm sure he would not want to come back.

The "overwhelming lust" doesn't have to be addressed. You might not know this, but it is quite possible for people to have two opinions at the same time even if you are not able to. Would I love Bruce to wind back at TBA in the future? Of course. Do I want Barnes to leave when he is ready to retire and on his own terms? Of course.

Pearl has "moved on" because we have a coach who is winning and made us an annual tourney team and has 113-45 since Year 3 after the Cuonzo/Donnie fiasco.....

You're acting like people think Bruce can save us here like we are competing with the Vandy's, Georgia's, and Mississippi's of the league to be the worst team each year.

The fact people, and seems like you , can't comprehend people being able like Bruce AND Barnes at the same time makes me laugh. I'm sorry Bruce hurt you.

Lol…his response was very reasonable, and the fact that we still discuss this 10 years later shows he is spot on.

All I have to say is that those of us who were actually in the stands for the Pearl years nodded as Auburn melted down Saturday.

We'd seen it before.

Bonehead passes. Check.

Ignoring key players while jacking up threes. Check.

Surrendering the paint. Check.

Bruce is a very good coach and certainly an enthusiastic salesman for whatever program he's coaching. He was precisely what the Vols needed when he came here.

Operative word is "was."

And he helped modernize TBA too. It’s much nicer now. Even something as simple as painting the seats made a huge difference. Pearl was great AND I love Coach Barnes. I wouldn’t trade for Pearl but if Barnes retired tomorrow and Bruce decided to come back then hell yeah I’d be excited to have him back. He’s a great coach.
