WOW...Holly Fighting Back Tears At Post Game Presser

We USED to have an aura, Voltopia. We don't have it anymore.

When your coach talks after almost every game about a lack of effort and motivation, you have serious--serious--problems. And this isn't just this year--we've been hearing this regularly for three/four years. Warlick brought in one transfer this year when she should have brought in at least three. Hell, with a bit of legwork she could have found a couple of walk-on guards. There is no excuse for having a freakin' 9-player roster--it's just another example of what a complete cockup this team is, in every way. Sit players who have effort or attitude or performance issues and play others--anybody, walk-ons even. What, are they going to do worse? We were losing by more than 30 today with our highly-recruited players. SOMEBODY needs to step in and take control of a team in free-fall.

Holly will be fine.

No she won't. She is clearly in over her head, and most people know that. Just because you want her to be fine, doesn't mean it's going to happen. She just doesn't have what it takes to be a head college basketball coach.

You're right Holly will be fine. She's being paid handsomely to be a half ass coach. Like the rest of your pro Holly posts you've managed yet another asinine one. The writing is on the wall that she sucks but for some reason you and others like you refuse to acknowledge it.

I suspect there iS someone who is bringing the team down--by attitude or by "being the boss" or by keeping a clique going (even if a clique of two).

Will Diamond have enough credits to graduate in May (this is her fourth year of college academics)? If so, could she transfer to another school and play immediately as a graduate student for her final year of eligibility? Didn't South Carolina get a player from Virginia last season who did just that?

Nice Post.

I agree, Yeah, that's why I say she has her work cut off for her, especially with limited numbers, but a veteran team, that part I don't understand, these are seniors and juniors.

She has to find three more players to go with Mercedes and Nared. Goodluck Holly.

Better yet why don't you coach up the players you have?

did anybody watch the UConn / texas game today? Tx was moving the ball, getting good pressure on D and scoring well. Then, Geno put in the girl from Tn, Dangerfield and totally changed the game. She hit a long 3, hustled her butt on D and got the ball moving on O.

Texas never got it going again. :(

We need better players and more of them. :(

I've lost faith in our bench ever making a difference and DD has been ruined by our coaching staff.

You'd see better results from the girls with better coaching...

I have read each post and I feel said and disappointed. I do not think anything else can be said about this team and the lack of coaching.

My family has supported UT for many years. We especially love our Lady Vols but know something needs to be done immediately. I believe a change at the top has to come ASAP. We cannot throw our players under the bus and we have to be patient as the team is rebuilt.

We all need to take a breath and see what happens next. Hopefully, we will see a light at the end of this very dark tunnel.

I truly never thought it would get this bad! Lets keep the FAITH!

It will get worse with Holly at the helm...

You are totally correct. Holly is a nice lady who was an All-American point guard for the LVs. She was CPS's loyal assistant for 25+ years. She was given the HC job based on this one fact. She has proven to be a poor HC. She needs to resign immediately. The job needed to be offered to Brenda Frese of Maryland (offered at a substantial raise of course). She would take the job with the #1 recruiting class coming in next year. Holly's assistants could coach the remaining part of the season. Holly needs to resign before the LVs become the next Louisiana Tech, Texas, USC or Virginia. These were once proud WCBB programs.

I am pretty sure Brenda Frese will never be offered the head coaching position at the University of Tennessee. Too many things said.

We have one on our team (Nunn) who has done the same thing and if I am her (and I want to play one more year before going into the draft) I would certainly consider it

I would rather shut the program down than have Brenda Freese as head coach.

She will not.

Additionally, unless the rule has changed in the last year, a player that has previously transferred between Division I schools cannot use the graduate transfer exemption to play a final year as a graduate student.

"They outworked us. They have more talent. They played harder. They have more heart. They're a team that's on a mission. They're focused. Obviously, we didn't have an answer for them today."

Holly, would you say Baylor had more talent "COACHING"? I would.

Maybe the new AD wil get her outta here.

Holly needs to step up to the podium today and turn over the team to either Dean or Jolette. I know that they are no better than she is but the team needs focus on the future not the ancient past.

The season is going to get worse before it gets better. A lot of tough games coming up Middleton, Reynolds, and Diamond do not get it. They have no basketball IQ. You have to play under control, you have to play smart. you have to make shots. Look at the boxscore. These three players did nothing yesterday were totally incompetent and we don't have anybody to replace them with so unless they get a lot better quickly a lot of losses headed our way.

5 of 25 from the field 9 turnovers among these three players. 20 percent shooting.
Jackson and Dunbar 2 for 7 29 percent shooting
Nared 5 for 14 36 percent shooting

So we took 46 shots other than Russell and made 12. That is worse than pathetic.

Russell 8 for 16 only player to shoot a decent percentage.

"They outworked us. They have more talent. They played harder. They have more heart. They're a team that's on a mission. They're focused. Obviously, we didn't have an answer for them today."

(On Tennessee's performance in the first five minutes)
"Well, we weren't very good if we're down 11-0. We didn't perform very good. We missed easy shots. We missed layups. We were taking bad shots and when you do those kind of things you get down. If you're not working to get better shots, you're going to be down. They took great shots. They didn't take bad shots. That just set the tone for the rest of the game."

(On the heart and effort of Tennessee today)
"It wasn't very hard to determine that. You would think that we would be a lot more focused. We had a week to get ready for this game and it looked like we played last night and we didn't have a clue what Baylor was going to do. Our goal was to not give them second-chance points, they had 24 rebounds, and limit our turnovers, we had 15. A great team has 24 offensive rebounds, 22 assists, eight turnovers and six steals. You're going to win a lot of games like that. We've got players that are underachieving. We're just underachieving and we're not playing as hard. Honestly, I don't have an answer. They looked a lot better prepared than the Lady Vols."

(On mentally regrouping this team)
"The great thing about basketball is you've only got a little bit of staying in the moment. Now, we've got to focus in on the next game. So, that's what we talk about. I don't know if it's so much about the next game as about us. We really prepared hard for Baylor and it didn't show. We've really got to focus in on us and not worry about our next opponent, meaning, we've got to take care of some things with our program and with our kids. It's part of the game. That's just part of the game. You get to refocus and you get to step up and get your next challenge and see how they step up. That's the one thing great about basketball: it's not a do-or-die game. This was a game about pride. I'm just extremely disappointed. I just didn't think we competed and I'm all about competing and playing hard. We didn't have those aspects in our game today."

(On the opening minutes)
"I'll have to go back and look. When you miss a layup, generally you're not focused. I can't get inside these kids' heads. I wish I could. I'd plant a couple seeds that say, `Do not turn over the ball and box out.' I don't know. I just have to watch the tape and see what they were doing to us to make us miss. We were missing free throws early. We just missed a lot of easy shot around the basket. Mercedes Russell played 35 minutes. She and Jaime Nared played hard. She demanded the basketball. If you look at who Mercedes was guarding, not too many of those kids scored. It was a lot of perimeter people letting the guards get inside the paint. I think Mercedes and Jaime were outstanding tonight."

(On Meme Jackson remaining in the starting line-up)
"I only know of two people who are going to be in the starting line-up, and that's Jamie Nared and Mercedes Russell. And from there, I don't know, to be honest with you. I know my choices are limited, but I think that'll be determined this week in practice."

(On Mercedes Russell)
"Well Mercedes I think she's healthy. When she got here as a freshman, everybody tended to be disappointed. Her feet were absolutely horrible. But bottom line, she got healthy, she got stronger, she got committed, she was committed to the game, but she worked on her game. She worked on her game this summer. So you're seeing the result of her just making a commitment to getting better. And that's what a kid has got to do. She's a great example for a young kids to follow. Because it's not about how many games you play in the summer. It's about what you're going to do with your game and how you're going to elevate it. Mercedes Russell has elevated her game. She's one of the most intelligent kids I know, who knows the game. She could be a great point guard if she wasn't 6'6". She's smart; she sees things happen, she sees the whole floor. I'm just really proud of her. She competed, she didn't back down. She's awesome. She's, I think, one of the best post players in the country and that's why we're going to continue to give her the basketball."

(On the cause of players underachieving)
"If I knew, I probably wouldn't be coaching. I'd be making a whole heck of a lot more money being some kind of psychologist working with sports teams. I don't know. But I'm going to try to put my finger on it because we're just underachieving. Maybe I think we're more talented than we are. Talented or not, you have to play hard. It has nothing to do with talent. It's respecting the game and right now, we are not respecting the game. It's not about Lady Vol basketball; it's about the game. This game is meant to be played as hard as you can. You have to be mentally tough and you have to compete. If you don't do that, then you're going to get beat by whatever we got beat by, thirty, twenty, whatever we got beat by. You can't just turn it on, that's not how it works. You have to respect this game. I should know. I was not even close to being as talented as these kids here. It's about heart. It's about thinking that you're better than you are. So these kids have to pick up my personality. They have to go down swinging. They have to carry a big stick, we're carrying a little twig right now and it isn't working. So talented? No, right now, we're not talented. Playing with a lot of heart? Right now, we're not playing with a lot of heart. We're getting out-worked, we're getting out-muscled and it's up to me to try to do something about it. I'm going to continue to work. I'm not going to give up on this team, I love this team. I'm just obviously disappointed in how they played. But we'll go back to work. It's a new day; the sun's going to come up. We're going to be off. I get to watch the team five or six times and continue to get madder and madder. But it's up to me to figure out how we're going to get this ship headed in the right direction. I promise you, I will figure it out. I'm not giving up on them, just have to go in at a little different direction."

"We've got players that are underachieving. We're just underachieving and we're not playing as hard. Honestly, I don't have an answer. They looked a lot better prepared than the Lady Vols"
This quote tells me that part of the problem is indeed the coaching staff not preparing these players. Continually saying "I don't know" is also an indication that you are not prepared or have the ability to correct the problem. Sorry Holly, the kids not playing up to your expectations is your problem, not theirs.

Go duck hunting and forget lady basketball. Holly is not going to ever be replaced . She is too much UT establishment. Give the trophy to Geno and call the season over.

I think Holly is not expecting the same level from her players that Pat did.... oh to think of what Pat would have done with our intensity level yesterday......

UConn does not have the size, depth, or experience to win it all this year. It is someone else's turn. Next year they only lose Chong but add the two transfer bigs and a stellar freshman class. That will cover the discrepancies in size, depth, and experience and they will be crazy good. South Carolina, Notre Dame, Maryland, and Baylor had better grab the trophy this year while they can.

Diamond should have been the next Candace Parker, Holdsclaw, Catchings.....

I think under Pat she would have been, but for whatever reason under Holly she is become worse than when she began her College career.
