WOW...Holly Fighting Back Tears At Post Game Presser

...5 of 25 from the field 9 turnovers among these three players. 20 percent shooting.
Jackson and Dunbar 2 for 7 29 percent shooting
Nared 5 for 14 36 percent shooting

So we took 46 shots other than Russell and made 12. That is worse than pathetic.

Russell 8 for 16 only player to shoot a decent percentage.

Thank you for posting this. I'm glad someone else see's it's the guards and not Russell that is the problem.

Remove Nared from the numbers and the shooting is 7 of 32 which is 21 percent. This is the norm for the guards, not an aberration.

Jaime getting a lot of praise for yesterday's game, but she didn't play that much better than Diamond. DD was on the floor quite a bit battling it out for loose balls and fighting for rebounds. She also had 5 FTs.

The PG/SG spots were a mess. Middleton, Reynolds and Jackson combined for 2-15 shooting (13%) and 0-3 from 3PT. You're actually giving them even better credit with your numbers.

I didn't praise Nared. I just removed her numbers to show the shooting gets even poorer without her.

I didn't mean to imply that you did, just that with other posters talking about the game and Holly's presser, Jaime was getting a lot of credit for being the only other player besides Mercedes to show up. Along with Mercedes, her and Diamond played hard and even if they shot poorly.

These HC Jobs on Div I are too taxing, the mental aspect of Basketball and Football takes a special person. Although I hate Bama, Nick Saban is sooo emotional detached that he doesn't care if he hurts people's feelings, Holly and Butch care too much and it impacts their ability to lead......and cold as that sounds, that is what it takes to be a coach at this level, complete detachment........Pat had a rare ability to be a hard nosed coach, but her players loved her.........why?.............she demonstrated that level of commitment required to be a champion. I don't see that kind of resolve from Holly or Butch.......as hard as they think they may be working the teams, I can also guarantee it is nothing compared to Pat or Saban.........jmo.

Can no-one see that our guards are taking contested shots. The lack of movement, body and ball, on the perimeter continues to make our guards terrible. Go back and watch the Baylor game and notice how many shots the Baylor guards take that are wide open because of ball movement. All the while notice how LV shots are almost all individual moves resulting in shots with a hand in their face.
Same problem as last year! How often do you see a LV guard catch on the perimeter then pause to measure up their defender and then try to make a move on them. If not that, they wait for a ball screen, the only screen they ever set, come off of it all the while there is no rotation of the off guards. They just stand to watch and see what happens!

I do believe Holly is stuck in Pat's era when you could play best on best and LV's most always had the best. There are too many outstanding players out there to be able to do this anymore.

Yeah, I also noticed that Baylor stayed fresh, not only because of depth, but because they didn't really have to move much on defense because we stood so much. At first I thought, Baylor looks so casual on defense, but it was actually our lack of motion.

Meanwhile, Baylor then had extra energy conserved to constantly screen and cut and move on offense, forcing us to run around on defense.

Diamond should have been the next Candace Parker, Holdsclaw, Catchings.....

I think under Pat she would have been, but for whatever reason under Holly she is become worse than when she began her College career.

Really? Her stats show she is the exact same player she was at the end of her freshmen of the year season at UNC.

I guess Holly has kept her from shutting down the guards that had career bests from JMU, Penn ST, VT, and Baylor in her pursuit of Defensive POY.

As I watch LV games I am amazed at how Holly continues to try to run offensive set to try to get DD "going". So many to get DD the isolation plays she wants to showcase her abilities.

We can think all we want of what Pat might have done with her.......we can also think that Pat may never have recruited her. Just like other top programs didn't.

are ABSOLUTELY Clueless. The key to offensive team basketball is quick movement of players and the ball, cuts, screens, sharp, quick passes, penetrating and dishing--getting defenders out of position, so that somebody has an open look. We do the opposite: We stand around the perimeter, make a desultory pass or two, then throw it to Nared or Russell and expect them to beat a defender 1v1 as if this were the NBA! That is STUPID basketball--and we've only been doing it for about 10 years now. Summitt's teams were the same way. Summitt was stuck in the 1970s and so is Warlick. We don't move and pass. And, on the other end, we can't cover other teams who do move and pass. We're a terribly coached team--and a team, importantly, with NO confidence. We terrible on both ends of the floor. The team is an absolute mess.

It appears to me that the players don't believe that what they're being told to do will be good enough to beat the better teams, and as soon as the better team starts making them look bad, they mentally throw up their hands and say, "It's no use! Why bother! We keep being told to do the same stuff that never works ever year and it's always the same! Just let this be over!"

That's what I suspect is going through some minds out there.

I think you can look at what Jeff Waltz said in his press conference recently that went viral. It's the generation of kids these days that are praised just for showing up in the gym and told they're god's gift to a team. Then they face actual adversity and get yelled at and they tell administration they are being treated unfairly (Sheryl Swoopes, Connie Yori).
With this team specifically, Holly has 3 extremely capable and knowledgeable coaches on her staff. Every one of those coaches has a voice and input to coach this team. Holly is right in that it is a matter of getting it through to these kids of what playing with heart, passion, and pride is. Diamond and Jordan specifically are very much so underachieving. The good thing here is that there is over a week to prepare for Texas.
Perhaps the embarrassment of last night will turn out to be a positive and wake these kids up.

We're back to blaming the players, and not blaming the inept coaching staff. Funny how all of these players that have passed through the program since Holly has been HC have been overrated or play without heart/passion/pride? I can't believe that Schaquila is just another one of those entitled kids who is happy underachieving.

It looks to me like the team is frustrated and don't believe in themselves...probably because they are playing for a 3rd string HC.

DD isn't in their league. Coaching or not those three players were capable of taking over and leading the way.

After watching this team in every game this year,it is apparent to me that the real reason that this team is a failure is because the TEAM does not want to be on the court playing basketball and they play like that. They simply do not want to play for Holly or each other for whatever reason. They have no pride in their play. They have no chemistry and fact is they play like they may even dislike each other or at least there appears to be cliques on an 8 member squad which is really difficult to achieve. Why does the team have no energy or passion to play the game to the best of their ability ? That is an open question which is answered simply by answering .....it is the person in charge that creates the environment of the work place and creates a place where people want to achieve the best possible results no matter what/where they work /play .

Not naming names but the reason stands taller than anyone else on our team! This where Holly wants the ball to go!

Diamond, wassup ma? Can she make everyone else better? Nope. If Diamond played like an All American, we would be good but, we might have a dud.

So, no u wouldn't build a team around her... she's too inconsistent. Let's Go Diamond, change yo mentality, and be a star. If its in ya.

The team has taken on the character of Holly-- soft and fragile... I believe teams play like they practice, and Holly isn't running tough practices.... don't think the girls respect her either-- "substitute teacher syndrome"!!!

I know your question was to another poster and I'm not trying to answer in that posters place, and no I haven't seen any practices.

But I have always been curious about how Holly runs her practices. I want to know exactly what she does and how she does it. Do they do full court scrimmaging, half-court scrimmaging, one-on-one drills, what?

I periodically see a video where the post players are trying to make layups while the coaches are banging on them with the big pads. Meh. To me basketball is leverage of an angle achieved through player and ball motion coupled with timing, anticipation, and teamwork. Not getting the stuffing knocked out of you by somebody with a big huge pillow.

I agree with whoever said you play like you practice.

I actually felt sorry for her! I sense that her "I don't know" is genuine at this point...she seems to be nearing a breaking point. As she said, I truly believe she loves this team. That doesn't change my opinion that a change must be made to salvage Lady Vol Basketball! Tough decisions are ahead for the powers that be...
No crying in basketball get tough make players tough and become a winner or move on to something you can do better.
