The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Wright already was rated a five-star prospect in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, where he previously was ranked the No. 11 overall prospect and No. 2 offensive tackle in the 2019 class. But he was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 35 overall player and No. 4 offensive tackle in the 2019 class before the final rankings were revealed Tuesday in a Facebook Live show broadcast on 247Sports' Facebook page.
Wright moved up 10 spots in 247Sports' rankings following his strong showing earlier this month at the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando, Fla., and during the practices leading up to the all-star game.
"When we look at these offensive linemen, we like for them to check some boxes, as well. One of them is his ability to show athleticism, traits across the board in other settings," 247Sports director of scouting Barton Simmons said Tuesday during the Facebook Live show, explaining Wright's final ranking.
"He's a big-time thrower in track. He plays some defense, as well, in the defensive line of scrimmage and is good there. He was really good at Under Armour, as well. He was good in the game."
He got bumped to a 5 star on 247 because of his showing at the UA practice. Rivals watched that same practice and game, and they argued that he should lose his 5 star ranking...
Wright does have some bad weight, but in some ways that’s better then the alternative. That’s what scares the analysts cause they read to much into it. His hands are already well ahead of most linemen coming out of high school and the college game is very much a hands and feet game. He also has a strong vertical set. Doesn’t have that mauler run blocking game yet, but that will come. The kid who pancakes everyone in high school by getting low and not using his hands it much harder to translate to college game. Wright will not only be good at college level but has tools to be a top pro as well. Great prospect imo.
Seriously they have the opposite takes of 247. 247 thought Wright was dominant, Rivals wants him to lose a star. 247 says that Gray had an outstanding week and I bet he’ll get a bump, Rivals says he’s too small and drops him out of their top 250. RidiculousIt's almost like Rivals is second tier to 247 when it comes to evals.
What jokes.
At this point, unless it's VQ, I've just quit paying attention to anything anyone from Rivals has to say.Seriously they have the opposite takes of 247. 247 thought Wright was dominant, Rivals wants him to lose a star. 247 says that Gray had an outstanding week and I bet he’ll get a bump, Rivals says he’s too small and drops him out of their top 250. The top prospect in West Virginia and the No. 2 offensive tackle in the nation spent the weekend on an official visit to the in-state school, and he liked the message from new coach Neal Brown. Huntington (W. Va.) High’s Darnell Wright, a five-star prospect and the No. 10 overall player in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, made the trip to West Virginia with his mom, and it allowed him to re-connect with some familiar faces.
“He said it was a good trip,” Huntington coach Billy Seals said. “He got to see some guys that we played against from previous years that are up there and hang up with them. He enjoyed the new staff. He said he enjoyed the visit.”
The Mountaineers followed up the visit by checking in on Wright at school Tuesday. “He said it is upbeat with the new staff,” Seals said. “He appreciated spending some time with the offensive line coach because that did not occur with the last staff. He thinks coach Brown is going to do a tremendous job there.”
There was also a strong message sent for what Brown plans on doing in recruiting moving forward. “(Wright) appreciated him coming out and saying he is going to recruit in-state kids,” Seals said. “I think that is something that meant something to Darnell.” Wright is slated to officially to visit Tennessee the weekend of Feb. 1. He plans to announce his decision Feb. 6.

IN HIS OWN WORDS…
“He (Darnell) told me the West Virginia visit went well and he enjoyed his time there,” said Huntington head coach Billy Seals. “He said it was good to see guys that he knew from playing against them. “He might be going to North Carolina this weekend and will be going to Tennessee the last weekend before Signing Day,” Seals said.
“Coaches from West Virginia, N.C. State, and Tennessee came in last week,” he said. “West Virginia was in today (Tuesday) and we expect Tennessee to come in this week.”
RIVALS’ REACTION…
Wright is checking out the most interesting options before making his decision. West Virginia made a good impression over the weekend and the coaches are doing a good job making Wright feel like a priority but it is probably too late. North Carolina will likely get another shot at Wright this weekend and he is very familiar with the campus and players on the team, especially his former teammate Billy Ross. Mack Brown and his new staff at North Carolina will have to do a lot to swing momentum in their favor. After everything the Vols have done to build a strong relationship with Wright and his family, Tennessee getting the last visit only strengthens their chances of landing his commitment.
