You knew it wouldn't be long after the tragedy for this to be brought up

This isn't going anywhere. Reid is trying to please the far left. No way would this pass the House and the WH has stated they have no desire to pass any gun control laws.

The house and senate both are putting bills up to please their base, knowing they have zero chance to become law, instead of working on solutions for the many problems we face.

Gun owner here. Not many - just to hunt. Don't keep ammo in the house.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was at least some way to tie all the information out ther together, so that auhorities could see who is stockpiling weapons and ammo - maybe something like this guy's purchases set off a little flag? I guess that would make some paranoid, but I can't help but think that a little flag that had local LEO knock on this door could have prevented this tragedy.

buying weapons and ammunition should earn you a visit from law enforcement? at what point would one be considered suspicious?

Holmes sent a laptop of his intentions to a professor at Colorado.

It was never delivered.

Shoulda woulda coulda is always fun but not worth eroding freedom.

What if, for instance, you're a competitive shooter? (Not necessarily a "professional", just going to informal fun competitions) Anyone that shoots 3-Gun would require lots of rounds of pistol, rifle and shotgun ammo to compete/practice. And that's just to participate in that one activity. Many of those guys go through thousands of rounds every year.

It would be nice if there were a concerted effort to include anyone that had been officially declared mentally unstable to show up in background checks. The might have stopped the VT shooter for instance but not the Aurora shooting. Even then a determined person, as long as they had money, could obtain firearms.

Crazy how most of these mass killings happen where guns are not allowed. Victim disarmament is never the answer, criminals do not follow the laws, that is why they are criminals.

Yep. We need to go back to the old west days when everyone was packing.
That would solve these mass shooting for sure.

how many mass shootings occurred during the Old West?

despite what you see in the movies, crime was surprisingly low, there is something to the knowledge that everybody is armed that deters criminal behavior

I don't trust most people to drive safely, let alone fire a weapon.

And I get the point about government checks eroding freedom. I do. But then the alternative is, every now and then, once every 5 years, some whack job is going to off 5-10 people and that's just going to be a sacrafice we all make in the name of freedom.

Honestly, to an extent, I can accept that. BUT, none of those killed were my child, wife, mother or father...

We have conflicting research, from my study the highest murders rates where in the 1880s to 1890s.

The point is that these whack jobs will do whatever they do despite any and all legislation. And that's the way the real, imperfect world works. We all need to deal with it.

When and where do you stop?

People quit driving dui, using farm equipment, fishing, boating, etc.

That's the first thing I said after the attack - if not a firearm, a homeade bomb, toxic gas, something. Crazy is gonna be crazy.

18 and over if they have a ccw, i see no problem with it.
Imagine if a ccw holder had been at VTech. Death count would have been lower i bet.

or a lot higher.
That is something we will never know.

I own guns but I do not see how everyone walking around armed is going to reduce murder.
