Saing Texas and Tennessee are similar in recent years gives ammunition to all those who think Tennessee fans are delusional. It is not even close.
Start wherever, but if we start with the year following Texas' national championship we see:
Texas has, over the last 15 years:
5 double digit...
I think you the OP is right. It does go beyond the coach. The coach is important - but there is and has been for a long time, a leadership problem at Tennessee. I have heard it from multiple people who come into contact with the university.
I don't know enough to tell you exactly what it is...
Really, 2022 will be year 0 for Pruitt, 2021 will still be a covid year and 2018-19 were really just the post-Butch Jones era. Everyone at Tennessee should understand this line of thinking, Phil certainly does, hence the extension.

Looking at past SEC Champions and their coaches' records in year 2 and 3 at the program they won the championship:
Orgeron: Year 2: 9-4/6-2 Year 3: 10-3/5-3
Saban (Bama): 12-2/8-0 division champ 14-0/8-0 SEC champ
Smart: 13-2/7-1 SEC Champ...
I think the problem is comparing guys who were coaching at Michigan State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Iowa State, etc. with someone at Tennessee.
Rightly or wrongly, a lot of us fans feel our program has standards higher than those programs. A 7-5 record at Michigan State with a win over...
I say you can badmouth and make fun of your family to your family. Just like I can badmouth the Big Orange to Vols fans. But if some other fanbase says something similar - then they are going to hell.
I was wondering as well. Was 2001 a night game? If so, I think it was still CBS, just one of their double headers.
It seems even in this last decade plus of some bad teams the game was still on CBS except for last yer
