It's obviously been a difficult week in Vol football with the investigation into allegations of forcible rape involving A.J. Johnson and Michael Williams. Investigators executed a search warrant on Sunday at Johnson's apartment and have spent the week interviewing people who were at the apartment as well as interviewing the alleged victim, Johnson, and Williams. On Thursday, interviews of those at the apartment were continuing.
No charges have been filed and really there is no timetable for that to happen. The District Attorney's office has received some of the evidence and has had discussions with the alleged victim. But the final findings from the investigation have not been turned over at this point. Once it is then it's believed that the DA's office will present its findings before a grand jury to determine what charges if any will be filed. With next week being a holiday, it's not guaranteed that a grand jury would meet or have the case to review. Typically, grand jury's hearings only occur one day a week.
That's why there is no timetable on anything at this point. As the investigation continues, Johnson and Williams remain suspended from all team activities and that includes Saturday at Neyland Stadium.
It should also be noted that Jones' decision to suspend both players before charges have been filed was received well by many this week from authorities to the national media as well as people on campus and close to the University. It was not in any way a statement about assummed guilt or innocence. It was a move that in today's climate is needed and it's been noted by a lot of people, because other programs and franchises haven't handled similar situations the same way.
